Book Environmental Aspects of Dredging

Download or read book Environmental Aspects of Dredging written by R. N. Bray and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding a port, deepening a navigation channel or creating new land for development, introduces changes to our physical, social, economic and political environment. Changes may result from events during the construction process, or relate to the nature of the completed structure. Changes can be positive or negative, short-term or long-term, and may affect the immediate vicinity of the project or a larger geographical area. Predicting and assessing all possible effects of a planned dredging activity in a scientifically-sound and reliable manner is essential, so that appropriate control measures can be taken to avoid or mitigate unwelcome impacts. This book provides guidance for a complete holistic environmental evaluation procedure and for the design and implementation of environmental control measures. The book is of particular interest to engineers, government agencies and port authorities, as well as civil engineering consultants and contractors involved in planning and designing dredging, maritime infrastructure and fluvial projects.

Book Dredging in Coastal Waters

Download or read book Dredging in Coastal Waters written by D. Eisma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-12-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The varied use of dredgers has led to the development of a variety of dredger types, from small ones appropriate to modest inshore projects, to very large sea-going dredgers for large-scale projects calling for the storage of dredged material within the ship. This book, which is the first book dedicated to dredging and its environmental impact in the widest sense, contains chapters on dredging operations in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Spain, the US, China and Singapore. Additional chapters discuss more general aspects such as dredging techniques, monitoring of dredging operations, and the prospects of dredging in a changing environment. As well as providing information on dredging activities in different areas, it gives an insight into the activities and problems (environmental or other) involved in modern dredging. It will be of interest to professionals and students alike.

Book Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress

Download or read book Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress written by Anthony Morrison and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of places of refuge for ships in distress is a pressing issue in maritime circles. Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress by Anthony Morrison examines the problem in the context of international and national law and analyses the remedies that have been suggested for resolving this troubling issue. The book examines places of refuge under international law, the laws of four major maritime States and the European Union. Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress analyses two proposed solutions – voluntary guidelines and a new convention. The book asserts that additional solutions are needed and examines potential alternatives. Places of Refuge for Ships in Distress is particularly useful, not only as an assessment of the specific problem, but also the wider examination of international maritime and environmental law that underpins any solution. It will serve as an essential resource to individuals involved in international, maritime and environmental law and those concerned with the threat to the environment posed by the carriage of dangerous goods by sea.

Book Places of Refuge for Ships

Download or read book Places of Refuge for Ships written by Aldo Chircop and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the contemporary problem of places of refuge for ships in need of assistance. There is an uncodified humanitarian custom providing a right to a ship in distress to assistance and protection by coastal authorities, including access to a place of refuge when necessary. With modern ships carrying large volumes of hazardous cargo and fuel, a disabled ship can pose a significant threat to the marine environment and interests of an affected coastal state. After being refused refuge, the ‘Erika’ and ‘Prestige’ became casualties causing severe environmental damage. Today, while the humanitarian right to assistance remains, the threat to the marine environment and the coastal state has to be considered in the granting of refuge. Written by scholars and practitioners, the book consists of 20 multidisciplinary chapters addressing the law, policy and management aspects of the problem. Specific chapters focus on the experiences and approaches of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, United Kingdom and United States.
