Book excerpt: Samburu society is a gerontocracy in which power rests with the older men; men under thirty may not marry or otherwise assert their personal independence. This nomadic tribe from the arid regions of northern Kenya cling to their traditional way of life despite the rapid change throughout Africa. The author spent more than two years during the 1960's amongst the Samburu, and as an adopted member of one of their clans, he perceived how their values and attitudes are closely interwoven with a social system that resists change.

Book The Maasai of Matapato

Download or read book The Maasai of Matapato written by Paul Spencer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study pioneered the relation of the dynamics of the Maasai age organization to tensions within the family. Together, these provide the twin strands of a man's career, opposed ritually and reflecting a fundamental ambivalence in Maasai thought. This analysis is illustrated with case material from the Matapato: a typical Maasai group.

Book Cattle Capitalism and Class

Download or read book Cattle Capitalism and Class written by Peter Rigby and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Ilparakuyo Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania, Peter Rigby discusses why third world development policies with regard to pastoral societies are inappropriate and likely to fail. A political economy of development, Rigby maintains, must incorporate historical, cultural, linguistic, and even aesthetic dimensions of the peoples involved. Using ethnography and other research materials, and basing his understanding on his years of living with the people he writes about, the author illuminates the culture and explores the prospects for a distinct section of pastoral Maasai--the Ilparakuyo. In addition, he attempts to develop a historical materialist theory of language in relation to a specific East African culture. While rural development is a priority in many recently independent third world countries, it is often not designed for the benefit of the producer. Rigby analyzes the language and customs of the Maasai to chronicle the changes forces upon them by both colonial and post-colonial governments, and the complexity of their responses to these challenges. The cultures, languages, and aspirations of such pastoral societies are often overlooked by development planners. Rigby describes how government expectations should be based on an understanding and respect of such social conditions. Author note: Peter Rigby is Professor of Anthropology at Temple University.

Book Tarangire Human Wildlife Coexistence in a Fragmented Ecosystem

Download or read book Tarangire Human Wildlife Coexistence in a Fragmented Ecosystem written by Christian Kiffner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume summarizes multidisciplinary work on wildlife conservation in the Tarangire Ecosystem of northern Tanzania. By drawing together human-centered, wildlife-centered, and interdisciplinary research, this book contributes to furthering our understanding of the often complex mechanisms underlying human-wildlife interactions in dynamic landscapes. By synthesizing the wealth of knowledge generated by anthropologists, ecologists, conservationists, entrepreneurs, geographers, sociologists, and zoologists over the last decades, this book also highlights practicable and locally adapted solutions for shaping human-wildlife interactions towards coexistence. Readers will discover the reciprocal and often unexpected direct and indirect dynamics between people and wildlife. While boundaries (e.g. between people and wildlife, between protected and un-protected areas, and between different groups of people) are a common theme throughout the different chapters, this book stresses the commonalities, links, and synergies between seemingly disparate disciplines, opinions, and conservation approaches. The chapters are divided into clear sections, such as the human dimension, the wildlife dimension and human-wildlife interactions, representing a detailed summary of anthropological, ecological, and interdisciplinary research projects that have been conducted in the Tarangire Ecosystem over the last decades. Beyond, this work contributes to the debate about land-sharing versus land-sparing and provides an in-depth case study for understanding the complexities associated with human-wildlife coexistence in one of the few remaining ecosystems that supports migratory populations of large mammals. The topic of this book is particularly relevant for students, scholars, and practitioners who are interested in reconciling the needs of human populations with those of the environment in general and large mammal populations in particular.

Book Maasai Language Culture

Download or read book Maasai Language Culture written by Frans Mol and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Maasai, basically a cattle-keeping people, live in East Africa on both sides of the Kenya-Tanzania border. . . . [Their] language and culture [are] under great stress and pressure from present-day ideas of modern life. . . . Maasai children learn their language from their mothers, but most of these children when they go to school will never learn to read or write in their mother tongue. None of them will ever know the basics of the grammar of their own language. This book tries to preserve as much as possible of Maa, the language, and Olmaa, the culture. It may best be described as a depository of linguistic and cultural data of the Maasai." -- Introduction, p. iii.
