Book Injurious Insects of the Farm and Garden

Download or read book Injurious Insects of the Farm and Garden written by Mary Treat and published by . This book was released on 1882 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Only those who live in the country are aware how much the success of cultivators, whether of farm or garden crops, depends upon insects. There is a surprising lack of knowledge among otherwise well educated people as to the life history of even the most common insects. The questions asked, not only by those in my immediate neighborhood, but by letters from all parts of the country, show how slight is the popular knowledge on this most important branch of Natural History. In view of this, and to bring a knowledge of the most destructive insects within reach of all, this volume has been prepared." - Preface.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects of the Farm and Garden The insect may remain in the pupa state for a few days or weeks, or it may pass the winter in this dormant con dition. The methods by which the escape from this imprisonment is made at the proper time, are various and interesting to the observer. In due time it comes forth, and when, as in the case of some moths, it has Spread and dried its wings, it seems wonderful that it could have been packed in so small a space. Book Insect Pests of Farm Garden and Orchard Classic Reprint

Download or read book Insect Pests of Farm Garden and Orchard Classic Reprint written by Ezra Dwight Sanderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Pests of Farm, Garden and Orchard The edition of the writer's Insects Injurious to Staple Crops, first published ten years ago, having been exhausted, the publishers requested a revision. It was found, however, that the advances in economic entomology during the past decade were such that it was necessary practically to rewrite the book. At the time it was first published two other books were projected; one to deal with the insects affecting garden crops, and the other to discuss those affecting fruits. Pressure of regular work pre vented the author from completing the manuscript for these works and in 1907 Dr. Chittenden issued his excellent book on Insects Injurious to Vegetables, so that there seemed to be no immediate demand for another volume on that subject. At the same time two other well-known entomologists were work ing upon books which would cover fruit insects, so that the writer abandoned the field to them. Subsequently, the work of one of these friends was cut short by his sudden death, and the other abandoned the task, at least for the present. Under these circumstances, it seemed that there was a distinct place for a book to cover all the insects affecting the crops of farm, garden and orchard, and having leisure to devote to it, the author developed the work in its present form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fungoid and Insect, Pests of the Farm His book has been written for those who wish to acquire some practical knowledge of farm and garden pests. It does not aim at dealing with all the numerous diseases which affect cr0ps but rather at giving an accurate account of some of the commoner forms. It is hoped that a working know ledge oi these pests will be of great commercial value to farmers and market gardeners, and also that by their own observations they will be enabled, to cc 0perate with those who are engaged in studying plant diseases in finding the most economical means of preventing the increasing annual losses due to these pests. Direct cures of some of the diseases are unknown; but even in these cases an accurate knowledge of the enemy will enable us to carry out remedial measures which will prevent big losses. Book Injurious Insects and Useful Birds Successful Control of Farm Pests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Injurious Insects and Useful Birds Successful Control of Farm Pests Classic Reprint written by F. L. Washburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and Useful Birds, Successful Control of Farm Pests This book has been written in the hope of supplying the needs of high school where Agriculture is taught, and of Agricultural Colleges which demand a good text-book that is not too technical, and where the work embraces a large field in which there is a call for practical information and suggestions. It is intended also to supply farmers, orchardists, vegetable growers, owners of gardens, and housekeepers with a reference book for guidance in a campaign against injurious insects and four-footed pests of the farm, and to assist them in obtaining information about some of our more common birds in their relation to agriculture. The widespread and growing interest in this latter group of animals is not to be disregarded. The suggestions contained herein are largely the results of twenty-one years of work in Economic Entomology on the part of the author. Yet in so large a field one must of necessity have recourse to much experience not his own, and the author has not hesitated to obtain desired information from many reliable publications; such as bulletins and circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture, bulletins from the Geneva and the Cornell stations, and from all sections of the country. Many illustrations are from Minnesota State publications. I have also been favored by the kindness of others who have loaned their cuts. Courtesies of this kind, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged, have been extended by the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture; P. J. Parrott, of the New York (Geneva) station; Dr. G. W. Herrick, of the Cornell station; the California station; Professor G. H. Dean, of Kansas; C.P. Gillette, of Colorado; R. A. Cooley, of Montana; W. C. O'Kane, of New Hampshire; H. A. Morgan, of Tennessee; W. E. Britton, of Connecticut; and the Ohio station. For figures 324 and 326 the author is indebted to the Country Gentleman. Some illustrations of spraying apparatus were obtained from the Barnes Company and the Goulds Manufacturing Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests During the Year 1890: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy To Mr. Frazer 8. Crawford, of Adelaide, 8. Australia, whose sound and well-skilled work was so serviceable in his own Colony and so well and so widely known, my tribute of yearly thanks is now (with the regret for his loss shared by his many friends) a tribute also of respect to the memory of an earnest and thoroughly true worker who has passed to his rest. His careful observations, the zeal for the public good with which he was ever on the alert to prevent establishment of dangerous infestations in the Colony, the hearty courtesy and open-mindedness with which all points under discussion were conducted with the cc-operators with whom he was in correspondence at home or abroad, make his loss cause of great regret to his colleagues and friends; and with a grateful remembrance of many years' unfailing assistance and cc-operation, I desire to add my tribute of deep respect to his memory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports on Injurious Insects During the last few years there has been considerable loss experienced in some of the states to the east of us from the attacks of certain weevils, known commonly as Bill Bugs, upon corn when it is just coming above ground, but up to the present year we have had no information of injuries from these insects in this state. It seems, however, that we are no longer to be favored in this respect as reports and specimens from a number of localities as well as a considerable abnud ance of the insects in the vicinity of Ames points to the in crease of the pests and probable serious losses another year. There are several different species concerned in the work in the states east of us, and as most of these occur in Iowa it is probable that we will have to consider most of them in time as destructive species, but during the present season we have had but two species sent to us or collected here in such numbers as to indicate any serious abundance. Download or read book Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests written by Eleanor an Ormerod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests: During the Year 1899, With Methods of Prevention and Remedy During the past season reports of observation of a great variety of insect infestations were forwarded, many of these being of our ordinary farm and orchard pests, but some also which had been little previously noticed, and of others details of habits, or of preventive measures, were contributed, serviceable for completing previous notices. The only crop attack, however, which was mentioned as seriously prevalent was that of Turnip Flea-beetle. The caterpillars of Cabbage Butter ies (as in the previous season) did a good deal of damage locally; and for about six to eight weeks from May 2oth much application was sent for lea ets on Wireworm, sometimes amounting to five or six applications daily. Some infestations which are often seriously injurious were little reported - as Surface Caterpillars to root crops; and Mangold-leaf Fly maggots; orchard caterpillars (including amongst them those of the Winter Moth) were little noticed the caterpillars of the Gooseberry and Currant Moth and Saw y were also little mentioned. Amongst field crop attacks, some addition to previous in formation was noted in regard to different kinds of Pear-shaped Weevils at Clover seed-heads. Amongst Corn attacks, some of the well-known kinds - as those of the maggots of Oat Frit Fly, Wheat-bulb Fly, and Corn Saw y within Wheat stems - were just enough reported to show they were not absent, as also Hessian Fly in Wheat in one locality, and I would most particularly desire to draw the attention of agriculturists (in case of this infestation occurring again in the country) to the notes given at p. 39, on the importance of destroying infested screenings with the contained chrysalids, the ao-called Flax seeds. With regard to insect infestation in our, whether as a generally spread home trouble in mills, &c., or in imports, the communications were on a much larger and graver scale than in any preceding year, and I have especially drawn attention to details connected with the Mediterranean Mill Moth in a paper under that heading, pp. 76 - 92. Amongst Hop observations a good working observation was given of possibility of broadscale trapping of the Click Beetles (the parents of the Wireworms); also notes of Hop Flea Beetle on the leafage, helped to give some additions needed to connect this attack in summer with that of the maggots later on in the Hop cones. Very little wasiv preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Injurious Insects of the Orchard Vineyard Field Garden Conservatory Household Storehouse Domestic Animals Etc

This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects of the Orchard, Vineyard, Field, Garden, Conservatory, Household, Storehouse, Domestic Animals, Etc: With Remedies for Their Extermination This book is designed for the use of orchardists, vineyardists, farmers, and others interested in the subjects treated. It is designed to convey practical information concerning some of the species of insects injurious to the industries of cultivators of the soil, and those interested in earth produce generally. It has been my aim to free the volume, so far as was possible, from technical terms, and I have retained the technical or scientific names of insects only to aid the reader in reference to scientific works. It must not be assumed that there has been any intention to present this work as a scientific treatise, and I may be pardoned for supplementing the statement by the information, that I have never laid claim whatever to scientific education. My advantages were limited in youth to a common school system, and since that period I have, from time to time, pursued the study of economic entomology, as opportunity allowed, up to the year 1874. Since that date I have been enabled to engage in extended practical investigations into the realm which before I had knowledge of only by reading. I was led to the field of experiment and investigation through my business. In 1874 I engaged in the manufacture, in the City of Sacramento, of fruit boxes. The next year the codlin moth appeared in some orchards, and the fruit of the country was threatened. Naturally, its injury would affect my business, and thus I was drawn to a consideration of means to protect it. I therefore entered upon the field of investigation, as I found the text-books and treatises did not afford the desired information - at least such as I was enabled to find in the literature of the subject. In 1878 I began to give the result of my inquiries to the public through the columns of the daily and the weekly press. Very few persons in this State, especially of those who should have manifested the deepest interest at that time, paid any attention to economic entomology. Book Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California Classic Reprint written by E. O. Essig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious and Beneficial, Insects of California Insect devastation costs the United States millions of dollars annu ally. California bears her full share, two millions being a reasonable estimate. Wise and timely application of well-known remedies would save much of this constant loss. Mr. E. O. Essig's signal success in the discovery and practice of control measures pointed him out as one fit to instruct the public as to the life histories of insects and the best methods to control their attacks. This led to the publication by the State Commission of Horticulture two years ago of Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California. Anticipating a great demand for the book, a very large edition was issued. These anticipa tions were greatly exceeded, and very soon, the edition was wholly exhausted. Commendation of the work was most hearty and reached the Commission from all countries, far and near. The call for another edition was loud and general. The Commission is greatly pleased to heed this request in the present enlarged and improved edition, which it feels sure will be very heartily welcomed.
