Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injuries and Diseases of Nerves: And Their Surgical Treatment It is now about nine years since, when House Surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, I first had the opportunity of treating some patients with wounded nerves. The cases interested me, for I found that but little was at that time known of the prognosis or clinical course of injuries of nerves. The treatment by suture was then in its infancy, and the results obtained by this method had not been ascertained. I therefore determined to try and obtain for myself the answers to problems which were not yet solved, and, as a result, the present work has gradually developed. In it are included the Jacksonian Prize Essay of the Royal College of Surgeons for the year 1882, and the Astley Cooper Prize Essay for the year 1886. The book may indeed be said to be merely a condensation of the latter essay, with the addition of such further knowledge as I have gained during the last three years. A portion of the following pages has also appeared in the Lancet for 1887, in the form of Lectures delivered at the royal College of Surgeons in that year. The work throughout has been done entirely from a clinical aspect, and whatever value it may possess is due to the fact that large numbers of patients suffering from nerve injuries of the most various kinds have been kept under constant observation for many years. I do not think that the practice of any one surgeon could have afforded a sufficient field for observation, but, fortunately for my purposes, I have been attached to a large hospital into which many and various accidents are yearly admitted, and in which my opportunities for clinical study have been practically inexhaustible. Book Peripheral Nerve Issues after Orthopedic Surgery

Download or read book Peripheral Nerve Issues after Orthopedic Surgery written by Christopher J. Dy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peripheral nerve issues are potential sequalae of orthopedic surgery, even after cases in which technically excellent surgery was performed. These injuries can impede the expected recovery of function after the primary surgery. Given the manifold challenges associated with recovery of peripheral nerve injuries, this book is designed as a multidisciplinary guide to the diagnosis, prognostication and treatment of peripheral nerve issues after common orthopedic surgeries. Beginning with an overview of nerve compression, injury and regeneration, as well as a presentation of the current diagnostic and imaging modalities for peripheral nerve injuries, this unique text is organized by anatomic region and by type of procedure performed. Topics covered include shoulder and elbow arthroplasty and arthroscopy, fractures of the hand and wrist, hip preservation surgery, total knee replacement, open surgery of the foot and ankle, lumbosacral myeloradiculopathy, and more. Each chapter is authored by both a subspecialty surgeon who routinely performs the surgeries described and a subspecialized hand/peripheral nerve surgeon with experience in evaluating and treating nerve issues after that particular injury. Emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary team approaches, patient counseling, and technical aspects of surgical treatment. Generously illustrated and written by experts in the field, Peripheral Nerve Issues after Orthopedic Surgery is a truly interdisciplinary resource for orthopedic, plastic, hand and trauma surgeons, physiatrists, trainees, and all professionals evaluating and managing postoperative peripheral nerve issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injuries of Nerves: And Their Consequences English medical literature contains no complete trea tise on injuries of nerves and the diseases consequent upon them. In fact, few persons have at any time in medical history been so situated as to command the peculiar opportunity which has fallen to the lot of the writer of these pages, and which alone he feels may justify him in adding another to the numerous monographs which to-day claim the attention of the profession. In May, 1868, Dr. Wm. A. Hammond, then Surgeon General of the U. S. Army, requested me to share with Dr. George Morehouse the medical charge of an army hospital for nervous diseases, the foundation of which I had suggested to the medical bureau, over which at that time Dr. Hammond presided with such ability as has caused his name to be inseparably associated with the medical and surgical history of the late civil war. Book Treatment of Nerve Injury and Entrapment Neuropathy

Download or read book Treatment of Nerve Injury and Entrapment Neuropathy written by Y. Hirasawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peripheral nerve injury and entrapment neuropathy often are complicated by injury to adjacent tissue such as bone, joints, blood vessels, and tendons. Clinicians who provide primary care in these areas require extensive knowledge of methods for treating wounds and nerve injuries. The most important element in the treatment of peripheral nerve injury is appropriate surgical repair or functional reconstruction; postoperative physical and occupational therapy are also necessary. This book summarizes current topics in Japan and other countries in the field of surgical nerve repair, including selection of treatment methods for peripheral nerve paralysis, practical issues in surgery, and aspects of postoperative care. The importance of evidence-based medicine is emphasized, with appropriate therapy decided on the basis of objective data. The book has a broad appeal to include general clinicians, clinical trainees, and allied health-care professionals.

Book Nerve Injuries and Their Treatment Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nerve Injuries and Their Treatment Classic Reprint written by James Purves Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nerve Injuries and Their Treatment Owing to the frequency of nerve injuries during the great war, increasing attention has been directed to the subject of their diagnosis and treatment. It is probable, moreover, that, for many years to come, neurologists and orthopaedic surgeons will alike be kept busy with the study and treat ment of the various disabilities resulting from such nerve injuries. The present work, based upon our personal experiences, was written and published originally in 1916, at a time when one of us was on foreign service. The inevitable difficulties of communication, due to war conditions, may perhaps be an excuse for some of the deficiencies in the first edition, of which we are only too conscious. This, the second edition, has been largely re-written in the light Of further experience, and, we hope, improved. We trust that it will continue to be helpful, not to the expert neurologist, to whom many Of the facts herein stated may appear elementary in their simplicity, but to the wider circle of physicians and surgeons who may have had a less extensive experience of such injuries. In a combined work by two authors it is difficult to avoid overlapping on the'one hand, or gaps on the other, and to secure that continuity of thought which is so de sirable. For all the defects of this kind each of us willingly accepts the blame, whilst yielding the praise (if any!) to his collaborator.
