Book excerpt: Desensitization of explosives by preshocking is being studied using the well-supported plane shock waves generated by a gas gun. Evolution of the waves in the explosive is monitored using in-material multiple magnetic gauges to measure particle velocity in the lagrangian frame, over ≈ 3[mu]s of run. PBX-9404, PBX-9502 have been studied, at pressures up to 10.5 GPa. A substantial extension of the run to detonation is observed in PBX-9404, with the run beginning approximately at the end of the preshocked region. A reactive wave is observed while the preshock persists in both PBX-9404 and PBX-9501, but evidently does not contribute to the detonation wave or shorten the run to detonation. PBX-9502 is inert at pressures accessible with the gas gun, but serves to clarify the progress of multiple shocks over the off-Hugoniot EOS surface and the shock dynamics of wave coalescence.

Book excerpt: Preshocking delays initiation of PBX-9404 and PBX-9501, relative to unshocked material. In PBX-9404 preshock experiments, a first shock of 2.3 GPa was followed 0.65 [mu]s later by a second shock of 5.6 GPa. In PBX-9501, a preshock of 2.8 GPa and 0.32 us duration was followed by an initiating shock of 6.0 GPA. Both PBX explosives show clear desensitization while the preshock persists. In PBX-9404, initiation of detonation occurs nearly as anticipated for the material, after coalescence of the preshock and main shock into a single wave. Multiple embedded magnetic gauges were used to measure the shock histories. Our data indicates a slightly longer run to detonation than expected, even though a single wave is initiating the material. A slight stress reduction at coalescence, as required by the shock dynamics, may be responsible for the overrun. A reactive waste is clearly evident while the preshock persists. The long run to detonation indicates that this reactive wave is not driving the initiation. A set of four preshock experiments were preformed on PBX-9502, which is unreactive at these pressures, to investigate the shock dynamics of the two waves in the HE.

Book excerpt: Two models for the initiation process are compared to results of experimental studies of initiation of detonation in two high explosives, PBX-9404 (HMX-based) and PBX-9502 (TATB-based), by sustained shock waves. A critical examination of the model known as single-curve buildup is made. Several comparisons are made with experimental results for the two explosives. The model describes the observed shock trajectories moderately well although it has some limitations. These are manifested by an examination of the relation between input pressure and distance of run to detonation. The data are also compared with model solutions for the initiation process which assume self-similar flow. The model can fit the experimental shock trajectory reasonably well but difficulties are encountered in attempting to complete the solution for the entire flow field. For PBX-9404, published pressure-time profiles are examined for self-similar character. The measured profiles show substantial disagreement with the similarity model.

Book excerpt: Shock initiation experiments on the heated PBX9501 explosive (95% HMX, 2.5% estane, and 2.5% nitro-plasticizer by weight) were performed at temperatures 150 C and 180 C to obtain in-situ pressure gauge data. A 101 mm diameter propellant driven gas gun was utilized to initiate the PBX9501 explosive and manganin piezo-resistive pressure gauge packages were placed between sample slices to measure time resolved local pressure histories. The run-distance-to-detonation points on the Pop-plot for these experiments showed the sensitivity of the heated material to shock loading. This work shows that heated PBX-9501 is more shock sensitive than it is at ambient conditions. Proper Ignition and Growth modeling parameters were obtained to fit the experimental data. This parameter set will allow accurate code predictions to be calculated for safety scenarios involving PBX9501 explosives at temperatures close to those at which experiments were performed.

Book excerpt: The authors have used an embedded electromagnetic particle velocity gauge technique to measure the shock initiation behavior in PBX9501 and PBX9502 explosives. Experiments have been conducted in which up to twelve separate measurements have been made in a single experiment which detail the growth from an input shock to a detonation. In addition, another gauge element called a shock tracker has been used to monitor the progress of the shock front as a function of time, thus providing a position-time trajectory of the wave front as it moves through the explosive sample. This provides similar data to that obtained in a traditional wedge test and is used to determine the position and time that the wave attains detonation. Data on both explosives show evidence of heterogeneous initiation (growth in the front) and homogeneous initiation (growth behind the front) with the PBX9502 showing more Heterogeneous behavior and the PBX 9501 showing more homogeneous behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of some numerical calculations of the impact of steel cylinders and spheres on the plastic-bonded high explosive PBX 9501 are described. The calculations were carried out by a reactive, multicomponent, two-dimensional, Eulerian hydrodynamic computer code, 2DE. The 2DE computer code is a finite difference code that uses the donor-acceptor-cell method to compute mixed cell fluxes. The mechanism of shock initiation to detonation in heterogeneous explosives is best described as local decomposition at hot spots that are formed by shock interactions with density discontinuities. The liberated energy strengthens the shock so that as it interacts with additional inhomogeneities, hotter hot spots are formed, and more of the explosive is decomposed. The shock wave grows stronger until a detonation begins. This mechanism of initiation has been described numerically by the Forest Fire burn model, which gives the rate of explosive decomposition as a function of local pressure. The parameters in the Forest Fire burn model have been developed from experiments where the induced shock approximates a plane wave and are applied, in this case, to a situation where the induced shock is a divergent wave with curvature that depends on the size and shape of the projectile. The calculated results have been compared with results from experiments involving instrumented mock and live high explosives, with projectiles of varying sizes, shapes, and velocities. We find that there is good agreement between the calculated and experimental data.

Book excerpt: We have completed a series of shock initiation experiments on PBX 9502 (95 weight % dry aminated TATB explosive, 5 weight % Kel-F 800 binder) and LX-17 (92.% wet aminated TATB, 7.5 % Kel-F 800). These experiments were performed on the gas/gas two stage gun at Los Alamos. Samples were prepared with ten or eleven embedded electromagnetic particle velocity gauges to measure the evolution of the wave leading up to a detonation. Additionally, one to three shock tracker gauges were used to track the position of the shock front with time and determine the point where detonation was achieved. Wave profiles indicate little delay between formation of hot-spots in the shock front and release of hotspot energy. In other words, a great deal of the buildup occurs in the shock front, rather than behind it. Run distances and times to detonation as a function of initial pressure are consistent with published data. The Ignition and Growth model with published parameters for LX-17 replicate the data very well.

It was conceived and born amidst the most desperate of circumstances. It attracted some of the most brilliant minds, the most innovative entrepreneurs, and the most c- ative tinkerers of that generation. Out of that milieu emerged physics and engineering that beforehand was either unimagined, or thought to be f- tasy. One of the ?elds essentially invented during those years was the science of precision high explosives. Before 1942, explosives were used in munitions and commercial pursuits that demanded proper chemistry and con?nement for the necessary e?ect, but little else. The needs and requirements of the Manhattan project were of a much more precise and speci?c nature. Spatial and temporal speci?cations were reduced from centimeters and milliseconds to micrometers and nanoseconds. New theory and computational tools were required along with a raft of new experimental techniques and novel ways of interpreting the results. Over the next 40 years, the emphasis was on higher energy in smaller packages, more precise initiation schemes, better and safer formulations, and greater accuracy in forecasting performance. Researchers from many institutions began working in the emerging and expanding ?eld. In the midst of all of the work and progress in precision initiation and scienti?c study, in the early 1960s, papers began to appear detailing the ?rst quantitative studies of the transition from de?agration to detonation (DDT), ?rst in cast, then in pressed explosives, and ?nally in propellants.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has examined how different rates of unloading affect the release of chemical energy in a granular explosive experiencing transient shock compression. A compressed-gas gun was used to generate two types of short-pulse shocks in the explosive PBX-9404. A shock pressure of 3.2 GPa sustained for 0.37 .mu.s was produced in both cases, but differences in flyer-plate properties resulted in different unloading histories. In one case the impact interface was rapidly unloaded by the initial release wave, while in the second case the unloading required multiple release waves over several microseconds. A VISAR system was used to observe the evolution of these two waves for distances up to 10 mm. The recorded waveforms showed that the unloading rates had a dominant effect on chemical energy release and growth towards detonation. This effect is important for considerations of critical impact criteria, and should provide a strong test for predictive shock-initiation models.
