This book was released on 2008-09-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classical metastable state possesses a local free energy minimum at infinite sizes, but not a global one. This concept is phase size independent. We have studied a number of experimental results and proposed a new concept that there exists a wide range of metastable states in polymers on different length scales where their metastability is critically determined by the phase size and dimensionality. Metastable states are also observed in phase transformations that are kinetically impeded on the pathway to thermodynamic equilibrium. This was illustrated in structural and morphological investigations of crystallization and mesophase transitions, liquid-liquid phase separation, vitrification and gel formation, as well as combinations of these transformation processes. The phase behaviours in polymers are thus dominated by interlinks of metastable states on different length scales. This concept successfully explains many experimental observations and provides a new way to connect different aspects of polymer physics. * Written by a leading scholar and industry expert* Presents new and cutting edge material encouraging innovation and future research* Connects hot topics and leading research in one concise volume

Book Polymer Blends Volume 1

Download or read book Polymer Blends Volume 1 written by Donald R Paul and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer Blends, Volume 1 highlights the importance of polymer blends as a major new branch of macromolecular science. Topics range from polymer-polymer compatibility and the statistical thermodynamics of polymer blends to the phase separation behavior of polymer-polymer mixtures, transport phenomena in polymer blends, and mechanical properties of multiphase polymer blends. The optical behavior, solid state transition behavior, and rheology of polymer blends are also discussed. This book is organized into 10 chapters and begins with an overview of polymer blends, with emphasis on terminology and the effect of molecular weight on the thermodynamics of polymer blends as well as phase equilibria and transitions. The discussion then turns to the miscibility of homopolymers and copolymers, in bulk and in solution, from the experimental and theoretical viewpoints. The chapters that follow explore the statistical thermodynamics of polymer blends, paying particular attention to the Flory and lattice fluid theories, along with the phase relationship in polymer mixtures. The interfacial energy, structure, and adhesion between polymers in relation to the properties of polymer blends are considered. The final chapter examines the phenomena of low molecular weight penetrant transport. Currently accepted models for unsteady-state and steady-state permeation of polymeric materials are presented. A discussion of unsteady-state absorption and desorption behavior observed in a variety of polymer blends complements the treatment of permeation behavior. This book is intended to provide academic and industrial research scientists and technologists with a broad background in current principles and practice concerning mixed polymer systems.

Book Double stage Phase Separation in Dynamically Asymmetric Ternary Polymer Blends

Download or read book Double stage Phase Separation in Dynamically Asymmetric Ternary Polymer Blends written by Chen Kuang and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phase separation in complex fluids such as polymers has been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies in recent years. Understanding the phase separation mechanisms and controlling morphological evolution are very important for designing various advanced materials with novel mechanical, optical, electrical, and transport properties. In polymer blends, dynamic asymmetry is induced by a large difference in glass transition temperature. In this work, phase separation behavior of ternary blends of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polyisoprene, PS/PVME/PI, and polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether)/poly(ethyl methacrylate), PS/PVME/PEMA are investigated. Ternary blends of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA exhibit complex phase separation behavior since PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior, while PI and PS (or PVME), PEMA and PS (or PVME) have upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior. 2D and 3D phase diagrams for these two ternary systems were plotted by both Flory-Huggins incompressible and regular solution compressible models. Casting the solutions of PS/PVME/PI and PS/PVME/PEMA blends form two phase-separated domains in most compositions: (i) PI-rich or PEMA rich, and (ii) PS/PVME-rich. Post-annealing of such samples leads to the second-stage phase separation due to unfavorable interaction of PS and PVME at temperatures about 100°C. Such behavior that is observed for the first time provides a new potential method for making different morphologies with the same system by changing annealing parameters and composition. Washing one polymer at a time using a selective solvent is used to study the morphology of ternary blends. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to study the kinetics and morphology of viscoelastic phase separation (VPS) in ternary blends.
