Book The Economic Consequences of Social Unrest Evidence from Initial Public Offerings

Download or read book The Economic Consequences of Social Unrest Evidence from Initial Public Offerings written by Mr. Philip Barrett and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior research attributes negative stock market performance following episodes of social unrest to elevated uncertainty. However, social unrest does not solely increase uncertainty, but separately acts to decrease investor sentiment. To determine which effect dominates, we study initial public offering (IPO) underpricing, which responds differently to changes to uncertainty and investor sentiment. Consistent with the notion that social unrest dampens investor sentiment, we find robust evidence that IPO first-day returns are lower during times of greater social unrest. Limits to arbitrage intensify the negative relation between social unrest and underpricing. Notably, strong institutional frameworks mitigate the impact of social unrest on underpricing, suggesting that quality institutions weaken the link between investor sentiment and returns.

The kingdom’s financial sector represents the second-largest contributor to GDP, accounting for 16.5% in 2014, with Bahrain recognised as a pioneer in Islamic finance, having been the first country in the world to introduce and implement rules specific to Islamic banking in 2001. Meanwhile, Bahrain continues to invest in considerable infrastructure upgrades, and these are expected to enhance the kingdom’s logistics offerings, as well as help facilitate greater tourism numbers. Construction is thriving once again, driven in large part by strong retail sector growth, with various projects, including plans for the world’s largest mall, indicating that the sector will maintain its position as the emirate’s biggest GDP contributor moving forward. Book The Past Present and Future of Higher Education in the Arabian Gulf Region

Download or read book The Past Present and Future of Higher Education in the Arabian Gulf Region written by Awad Ibrahim and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume contributes a novel understanding of the past, present and future of higher education across the six countries that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Against the backdrop of intense political, ideological and epistemological disruptions across the Arabian Gulf Region over the last two decades, this volume adopts critical comparative perspectives in order to chart the history, present-day and future realities of higher education in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. By focusing on dynamics relating to neoliberalism, and using the notions of ‘tensionality’ and ‘locality’ to situate topics such as curricula, policies, practices, the volume engages with current discourses, controversies and themes such as the internationalization and marketization of higher education in these countries. In doing so, the book offers a theoretical framework to enable greater understanding of the contemporary functioning of higher education in the Arabian Gulf Region. This text will benefit scholars, academics and students in the fields of higher education and international and comparative education more broadly. Those involved with educational policy and politics, and Middle Eastern studies in general, will also benefit from this volume.

Book Raising Capital on Arab Equity Markets

Download or read book Raising Capital on Arab Equity Markets written by Lu’ayy Minwer Al-Rimawi and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first book of its kind discusses in particular the role of investor protection as regards disclosure when issuers are offering securities to the public, with full descriptions of the securities markets and stock exchanges in seventeen Arab jurisdictions. In two interrelated parts it examines both the regional macroeconomic matrix and a detailed case study (that of Jordan) in order to analyse the development and characteristics of an Arab regulatory model. Among the important issues and topics arising in the course of the analysis are the following: relevance of international regulatory standards to Arab securities markets; mandatory versus voluntary securities disclosure; the fundamentals of the Islamic financial system, role of riba and gharar, nature and impact of Shari’a’s unquantifiable juridical risks on the modus operandi of Arab securities markets; macroeconomic adjustment policies and structural adjustment programmes in several Arab countries; recent economic and Arab capital markets impact in the wake of the ‘Arab Spring’; extent of different countries’ reliance on Shari’a as a constitutional source; constitutional challenges to the imposition of interest; the need for the positive law to compel securities disclosure under Shari’a; shareholders’ remedies when suing for fraud or negligent misstatements; liability for misleading or inaccurate disclosure (under the general law of the UK and a selected Arab jurisdiction); prospectus liability under the statutory regime of the UK and an Arab regulatory regime; bars to rescission of contract: Comparative UK and Shari'a aspects; and Arab, UK regulatory agencies' enforcement, prosecutorial, administrative and civil remedies. The author closely examines various instruments deployed for conveying securities disclosure and dissemination of information, and looks extensively at relevant rulings as enunciated by an Arab court of cassation. He then constructs a model of an effective securities disclosure regime in order to provide better investor protection for shareholders under Shari’a. 'Among the strengths of Dr Lu’ayy Minwer Al-Rimawi’s book is the fact that at all times he adopts a comparative approach, not only as between different Arab systems, but also with an appreciation of the legal position in the UK and the European Union and elsewhere’ [The Hon. Mr Justice Sir William Blair Q.C., High Court Judge in the UK and Chairman of the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Tribunal]. As the first in-depth discussion of the regulation of Arab capital markets in English, with an eye to international standards and the policy issues involved – and with attention focused on the central question of how the law can properly protect investors – this book will commend itself to all those with an interest in securities markets in the Arab world.

Download or read book The Report Saudi Arabia 2015 written by Oxford Business Group and published by Oxford Business Group. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Saudi Arabia’s economy remains dominated by its hydrocarbons sector, several other sectors have emerged in recent years as key propellors of economic growth. The Kingdom’s financial services industries have continued to expand steadily despite the liquidity challenges posed by falling oil prices. Trade and investment are being treated as key priorities as the government looks to negotiate this altered economic landscape, aiming to leverage its large population, high per capita income and many sea and air links. The country’s capital markets sector meanwhile is poised for a period of significant growth on the back of the opening of Tadawul to international investors in 2015 and the raft of regulatory upgrades implemented as result. The domestic insurance industry, which remains dominated by the motor and medical segments, has enjoyed double-digit growth over the past five years in both revenue and net profit. Elsewhere the targets outlined in Vision 2030 indicate that a period of greater opportunity and integration is on the horizon for private players operating in core sectors such as health care, utilities, industry and ICT.
