Book Salvation in Henri de Lubac

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eugene R. Schlesinger

Download or read book Salvation in Henri de Lubac written by Eugene R. Schlesinger and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2023-07-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a compelling account of the major works of Henri de Lubac, one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century, and argues that soteriology provides a lens through which their inner unity can be discerned. The writings of Henri de Lubac have left an indelible mark on Catholic theology, preparing the ground for, giving shape to, and explaining the seminal event of twentieth-century Catholicism: the Second Vatican Council. Like the Council itself, though, de Lubac remains a contested figure, difficult to classify. Salvation in Henri de Lubac presents an overview of de Lubac’s major works in light of his own statements that a mystical vision animated them all. De Lubac’s mystical theology hinges upon a vision of salvation, understood as humanity’s incorporation into the triune God through the cross and resurrection of the incarnate Christ. From his writings on the supernatural and theological epistemology, to his treatments of the spiritual interpretation of Scripture, ecclesiology, sacramental theology, and the theology of history, the mystery of the cross looms large, gathering these disparate topics into one focal center while also allowing their distinct contours to remain. By attending to de Lubac’s work in this light, Eugene R. Schlesinger brings important themes from French language scholarship into the English-speaking conversation and clarifies the nature of de Lubac’s ressourcement. It is not a method, nor a sensibility, but the outgrowth of a conviction: in the mystery of Christ a definitive and unsurpassable gift has been given, one that constitutes the meaning of the world and its history, one whose riches can never be exhausted. Schlesinger claims that unless we understand de Lubac and his work in light of his own motivations and emphases, we risk distorting his contribution, reducing him to a proxy in the struggle for post-conciliar Catholic self-definition.

Book My Struggle for Freedom

Download or read book My Struggle for Freedom written by Hans Kng and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Kung is undoubtedly one of the most important theologians of our time, but he has always been a controversial figure, and as the result of a much-publicized clash over papal infallability had his permission to teach revoked by the Vatican. Yet at seventy-five he is also something like a senior statesman, one of the 'Group of Eminent Persons' convened by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and a friend of heads of government like Tony Blair and President Mubarak of Egypt. In this autobiography he gives a frank and outspoken account of the first four decades of his life. He tells of his youth in Switzerland and his decision to become a priest, his doubts and struggles as he studied in Rome and Paris, and his experiences as a professor in Tubingen, where he received a chair at the amazingly early age of thirty-one. Most importantly, as one of the last surviving eye witnesses he gives an authentic account of the struggles behind the scenes at the Second Vatican Council, in which he took part as a theological expert. Here it becomes clear just how major an influence he was, to the point of shaping the Council's agenda and drafting speeches for bishops to deliver in plenary sessions. Kung's book offers an acute analysis, compelling its drama, of meetings with presidents like John F. Kennedy, popes like John XXIII and Paul VI, great theologians like Karl Barth and Karl Rahner, and journeys round the world. With its rich thought and vivid narrative, it paints a moving picture of Kung's personal convictions, and his struggle for a Christianity characterized not by the domination of an official church but by Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Alternative Vision: An Interpretation of Liberation Theology offers a complete overview of the liberation theology movement that is ideally suited for a thorough study of the major questions and important theologians that have contributed to the debate. It outlines and brings together into a single unified account liberation theology's alternate vision for providing the possibility of meaningful historical existence for humans in the world today. The author translates the Christian vision of liberation theologians from Latin America into more general theological and cultural categories familiar to the English-speaking world, then shows how that vision makes a unified interpretation of Christian doctrine. First, liberation theology must be seen as a response to massive human suffering witnessed throughout the world today. This human agony is largely caused by human beings and the social and political structures we create, and liberation theology addresses this dilemma using the tradition of Christian wisdom and direct imperatives that have universal, transcultural significance. The second goal is achieved by showing the connection between liberation principles and the major doctrines of Christian belief, including God, Jesus Christ, faith, grace, the church, sacraments, ministry, and spirituality.
