Book Generation Sampling and Analysis for Low Level GB Sarin Vapor for Inhalation Studies

Download or read book Generation Sampling and Analysis for Low Level GB Sarin Vapor for Inhalation Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tested and optimized various methodologies to generate, sample and characterize GB test atmospheres in an inhalation chamber, particularly at low vapor levels. A syringe drive/spray atomization system produced GB vapor at lethal concentrations of 1- 44 mg/m3. A saturator cell was used to generate GB vapor at sub-lethal concentrations down to levels approaching the TLV-TWA of 0.0001 mg/m3. Both generation techniques demonstrated the ability to produce stable vapor concentrations over extended exposure periods for inhalation toxicology studies. The techniques employed for this study would lay the foundation for testing other chemical warfare agents, such as GF or VX.

Book The Particulate Air Pollution Controversy

Download or read book The Particulate Air Pollution Controversy written by Robert F. Phalen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small invisible particles in the urban air, especially those produced by human activities, have recently stimulated intense scrutiny, debate, regulation, and legal proceedings. The stakes are high, both with respect to health impacts and economic costs, and the methods used previously to resolve similar issues are no longer adequate. Everyone on earth inhales thousands to millions of particles in each breath, so if urban particulate air pollution—particulate matter (PM)—is significantly hazardous, the negative impact on health could be staggering. Yet the activities that generate PM, such as farming, manufacturing, mining, transportation, and generating electricity, are themselves essential to human health and welfare. Scientists, regulators, legislators, activists, judges, lawyers, journalists, and representatives of the business community are actively involved in addressing the question of what should be done. This complex issue presents opportunities for critically assessing the relevant knowledge and for adopting more rigorous approaches to this and similar problems. What is the PM controversy, and why is it a good case study for how science and public policy might better interface? The PM controversy is the sum of the frequently heated debates related to the potential health risks from urban PM.

Book Generation Sampling and Analysis for Low Level GF Cyclo Sarin Vapor for Inhalation Toxicology Studies

Download or read book Generation Sampling and Analysis for Low Level GF Cyclo Sarin Vapor for Inhalation Toxicology Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generation, sampling, and analysis system used for low-level GB inhalation studies was modified to test the nerve agent GF. A saturator cell used in conjunction with an inhalation chamber generated low level OF vapor at concentrations ranging from 0.004 - 0.05 mg/cu m. Additional testing with a syringe drive spray atomization system generated OF vapor concentrations from 0.7 - 2 mg/cu m. This capability was important to determine sub-lethal effects (primarily meioses) for inhalation toxicology studies. In addition, the techniques successfully employed for this study would lay the foundation for testing low-level VX.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tested and optimized various methodologies to generate, sample, and characterize sarin (GB) test atmospheres in an inhalation chamber, particularly at low-vapor levels. A saturator cell was used to generate GB vapor at sub-lethal concentrations from 1 mg/m down to very low GB levels approaching the TLV-TWA of 0.0001 mg/m3. Both generation techniques demonstrated the ability to produce stable vapor concentrations over extended exposure periods. This capability was important to determine sub-lethal nerve agent effects for inhalation toxicology studies. In addition, the techniques employed for producing and maintaining low-level GB vapor would lay the foundation for testing other chemical warfare agents, such as GF or VX.

Book Overcoming Challenges to Develop Countermeasures Against Aerosolized Bioterrorism Agents

Download or read book Overcoming Challenges to Develop Countermeasures Against Aerosolized Bioterrorism Agents written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-08-07 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) gives the highest priority to developing countermeasures against bioterrorism agents that are highly infective when dispersed in aerosol form. Developing drugs to prevent or treat illnesses caused by bioterrorism agents requires testing their effectiveness in animals since human clinical trials would be unethical. At the request of NIAID, the National Academies conducted a study to examine how such testing could be improved. Overcoming Challenges to Develop Countermeasures Against Aerosolized Bioterrorism Agents provides recommendations to researchers on selecting the kinds of animal models, aerosol generators, and bioterrorism agent doses that would produce conditions that most closely mimic the disease process in humans. It also urges researchers to fully document experimental parameters in the literature so that studies can be reproduced and compared. The book recommends that all unclassified data on bioterrorism agent studies-including unclassified, unpublished data from U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID)-be published in the open literature. The book also calls on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to improve the process by which bioterrorism countermeasures are approved based on the results of animal studies.
