Book excerpt: Some Mistakes of Moses, was written by American writer, orator, and proponent of Freethought and agnosticism Robert Green Ingersoll, and originally published in 1897.The work is a popular lecture which asks questions of the veracity of the Pentateuch, and questions the mysteries of the scripture from Creation through to the Egyptian Captivity. Ingersoll seriously believed that the alleged divine origins of the Bible were not sufficient reason for a suspension of critical judgement. His invective against Old Testament is a call for reason, as he feared that when the Bible was read as truth rather than as a collection of fables, mankind would destroy itself in its attempt to follow the teachings of Moses to the letter. Ingersoll strongly believed that the most important belief one can have is belief in man. "Theology is a superstition - Humanity is a religion".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ingersoll and Moses: A Reply It may seem to many a useless task to publish a reply to that which is considered by some as its own refutation. Such however, ignore the insidious and wide-spread influence of the author of The Mistakes of Moses. If it should appear to the physician that a specific compound is sure death to some who may receive it, he ought not to decline to seek an antidote because he despises the manufacturer of the drug as a charlatan, but is bound to employ his best skill in preparing a remedy. It may be deemed wiser, instead of indicating the poison by its vulgar name, learnedly to warn people against using its constituent parts, lest we should bring the very thing into notice which we wish to suppress. In other words many will say, to combat Ingersoll is to advertise him, and make that prominent which might otherwise be forgotten. If any hold this view of the case, I beg leave to differ with them. Download or read book The Bible Defended and Atheism Rebuked written by Allan B. Magruder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Defended and Atheism Rebuked: Reply to Robert G. Ingersoll's Lectures, "Mistakes of Moses," "Skulls," Etc., "What Must We Do to Be Saved?" Etc No apology is needed to those who reverence the Bible as the Word of God, for this attempt to defend that Word and to confute the sophistry of one whose life is spent in laborious efforts to impeach and vilify the Divine oracles. Oi the entire sympathy of such there is no reason to doubt. Those who have not adopted as yet that Holy Book as the Divine guide of life, but who value the safety and happiness of mankind, we point to the public avowal by Mr. Ingersoll of his sympathy with Socialists and Nihilists who would subvert all law and order and convulse the world by wholesale murder and crime. In this connection we refer them to his confession, My sympathies cluster around the point of the dagger, etc., as collated in the following pages.
