Book Sabah Is it a State Built by Local or Foreign Perspiration

Download or read book Sabah Is it a State Built by Local or Foreign Perspiration written by Ujin Matjin and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour the main resource for production other than capital and technology or knowledge in an emerging country like Malaysia. The total factor productivity is high for labour compared to other resources. To enhance it further, the government came up with policies to upgrade the skills and knowledge of the workforce. Labour was combined with knowledge or technology to create human capital. The human capital was the main reason that attracted foreign direct investment into the nation. Knowledgeable and skilful human capital is also important to increase the total factor productivity of capital. Under the New Economic Model, the nation was separated into various corridors to attract foreign direct investment into the nation. The inflow of foreign direct investment guaranteed job opportunity, knowledge and technology and also export. This appreciates the exchange rate and purchasing power, eventually the economic growth of the nation. Sabah was one of the corridors that had great potential to attract foreign direct investment especially in the service-based industry and agriculture industry. Other than its uniqueness in terms of its natural environment, rich in flora and fauna, Sabah is also able to attract foreign direct investment due to its labour force. Labour force in Sabah consists of locals and foreign. The influx of foreign labour in Sabah is immense in the agriculture sector. Foreign labour differs from expatriates. The need for foreign labour has its advantages and disadvantages. The foreign labour was deemed important in the production activity but it caused unemployment among locals, allocation of resources for their needs, and also social costs like crime and diseases. Thus, the Sabah government has taken numerous measures to reduce the dependence on foreign labour. But before such measures are taken an empirical analysis need to be carried out to justify whether the Sabah economic growth was dependent on local labour or foreign labour. An advance econometric analysis was used in this book to justify that Sabah’s economic growth is foreign labour dependent.

Book Government Linked Companies and Sustainable Equitable Development

Download or read book Government Linked Companies and Sustainable Equitable Development written by Terence Gomez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over how far governments should intervene in economies in order to promote economic growth, a debate which from the 1980s seemed settled in favour of the neo-liberal, non-interventionist consensus, has taken on new vigour since the financial crisis of 2008 and after. Some countries, most of them in industrialised Asia, have survived the crisis, and secured equitable economic growth, by adopting a developmental state model, whereby governments have intervened in their economies, often through explicit support for individual companies. This book explores debates about government intervention, assesses interventionist policies, including industrial and innovation policies, and examines in particular the key institutions which play a crucial role in implementing government policies and in building the bridge between the state and the private sector. The countries covered include China, India, South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan, together with representative countries from Europe and Latin America.

Download or read book Borneo Transformed written by Jean-Francois Bissonnette and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, Southeast Asia's agricultural sector has experienced phenomenal growth, with increases in production linked to an energy-intensive capitalization of agriculture and the rapid development of agrifood systems and agribusiness. Agricultural intensification and territorial expansion have been key to this process, with expansion of areas under cultivation playing an unusually important role in the transformation of the countryside and livelihoods of its inhabitants. Borneo, with vast tracts of land not yet under crops, has been the epicenter of this expansion process, with rubber and oil palm acting as the spearhead. Indonesia's Kalimantan provinces and the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak have all undergone major changes but the time frames have varied, as have the crops involved. Agricultural expansion in Borneo is both an economic and a political process, and it has brought about profound socio-economic transformations, including deforestation, and development of communication networks. There has also been rapid population growth, much faster than in either Indonesia or Malaysia as a whole, with attendant pressures on employment, housing and social services. Until the end of the 20th century, agricultural expansion in Indonesia and Malaysia was largely state driven, with the goal of poverty reduction. Subsequently, as in Borneo, boom crop expansion has been taken over by private corporations that are driven by profit maximization rather than poverty reduction.

Book The Roots of Resilience

Download or read book The Roots of Resilience written by Meredith L. Weiss and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Roots of Resilience examines governance from the ground up in the world's two most enduring electoral authoritarian or "hybrid" regimes—Singapore and Malaysia—where politically liberal and authoritarian features are blended to evade substantive democracy. Although skewed elections, curbed civil liberties, and a dose of coercion help sustain these regimes, selectively structured state policies and patronage, partisan machines that effectively stand in for local governments, and diligently sustained clientelist relations between politicians and constituents are equally important. While key attributes of these regimes differ, affecting the scope, character, and balance among national parties and policies, local machines, and personalized linkages—and notwithstanding a momentous change of government in Malaysia in 2018—the similarity in the overall patterns in these countries confirms the salience of these dimensions. As Meredith L. Weiss shows, taken together, these attributes accustom citizens to the system in place, making meaningful change in how electoral mobilization and policymaking happen all the harder to change. This authoritarian acculturation is key to the durability of both regimes, but, given weaker party competition and party–civil society links, is stronger in Singapore than Malaysia. High levels of authoritarian acculturation, amplifying the political payoffs of what parties and politicians actually provide their constituents, explain why electoral turnover alone is insufficient for real regime change in either state.

Book Landscape and livelihood changes in Sabah Malaysia

Download or read book Landscape and livelihood changes in Sabah Malaysia written by Ibrahim, A.L. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key messagesLand is at the center of socioeconomic activities in Kampung Gaman. Customary practices and investments in land, such as paddy farming, established fallow lands, a cemetery and fruit trees convey the land rights of the community. In Sabah, unless a plot of land is warranted a physical deed, the land is considered as state land. Customary lands can be confiscated if the owner does not acquire his or her right to the native title (Dayang Norwana et al. 2011).Yet, the allocation of available lands tends to favor commercial development instead of acknowledging the customary rights of the communities (Sabah Lands and Surveys Department 2010; Colchester et al. 2013). Consequently, the land is often ‘developed’ without the community’s consent. This study looks at multiple development interventions in Kampung Gaman (i.e. public facilities, agriculture and forest conservation) and analyzes their impact on community land ownership, landscape and land use change, and livelihoods. We found that development interventions might bring ‘economic’ development, but at the same time may see the community dispossessed of its lands. Thus, an effective form of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) is crucial in enforcing a community’s rights and encouraging a system that ensures a community’s involvement.
