Book Infrared Spectroscopy of Ion hydrocarbon Clusters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many biological and environmental systems contain ion, water, and hydrophobic components; and it is the balance between these competing interactions which governs their chemistry. This Thesis aims at exploring ion0́Ø0́Ø0́Øhydrocarbon interactions, then ion0́Ø0́Ø0́Øwater0́Ø0́Ø0́Øalkane interactions. To accomplish this, a combination of gas phase infrared predissociation spectroscopy (IRPD) and tandem mass spectrometry is utilized. The solvation of alkali metal ions by methane is discussed first, beginning with the effects of multiple argon atoms on Li+0́Ø0́Ø0́ØCH4 dimer clusters followed by a study of M+(CH4)n clusters where it is revealed that ions have a weak electrostatic effect beyond the first solvent shell. Next, the argon tagging and monitoring unique fragmentation channels are used to selectively probe for high energy Li+(H2O)3-4Ar1 conformers which contain extensive water hydrogen bonding. Finally, ion0́Ø0́Ø0́Øwater0́Ø0́Ø0́Øalkane interactions are probed in Li+(H2O)n clusters containing CH4 or C6H12 molecules. Some spectra contain hydrogen bonded peaks correlating to weak water0́Ø0́Ø0́Øalkane interactions. Furthermore, there is strong evidence that high energy conformers containing water hydrogen bonding are present in the cluster ion beam. This analysis is expanded to anionic Cl-(Water)m(CH4)n clusters to compare with cations. Density functional theory or MP2 level calculations were used to support and help characterize experimental data.

Book Infrared Spectroscopy of Ionic Clusters

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopy of Ionic Clusters written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes new experiments wherein the infrared vibrational predissociation spectra of a number of mass-selected ionic cluster systems have been obtained and analyzed in the 2600 to 4000 cm−1 region. The species studied include: the hydrated hydronium ions, H3O (H2O){sub 3 -10}, ammoniated ammonium ions, NH4(NH3){sub 1 -10} and cluster ions involving both water and ammonia around an ammonium ion core, (mixed clusters) NH4(NH3){sub n}(H2O){sub m} (n+m=4). In each case, the spectra reveal well resolved structures that can be assigned to transitions arising from the vibrational motions of both the ion core of the clusters and the surrounding neutral solvent molecules. 154 refs., 19 figs., 8 tabs.

Book Infrared Spectroscopy of Nonclassical Ions and Their Complexes

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopy of Nonclassical Ions and Their Complexes written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes an infrared spectroscopic study on the structures and dynamics of the nonclassical ions and their complexes, using ion trap vibrational predissociation spectroscopy. Chapter One provides an introduction to the experimental apparatus used in this work. Chapter Two describes the previous theoretical and experimental works on the carbonium ion CH5 and infrared spectroscopic and theoretical works on CH5. CH5+ was predicted to scramble constantly without possessing a stable structure. In Chapter Three, the infrared spectroscopy for the molecular hydrogen solvated carbonium ions CH5+(H2){sub n} (n=1-6) in the frequency region of 2700-4200 cm−1 are presented and compared with the results of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation on CH5+(H2){sub n} (n=0-3). The results suggested that the scrambling of CH5+ slowed down considerably by the stabilization effects of the solvent H2 molecules, and it was completely frozen out when the first three H2 molecules were bound to the core CH5+. Chapter Four presents the complete infrared spectra for the solvated carbonium ions, CH5+(A)(subscript x)(B){sub y} (A, B=H2, Ar, N2, CH4;x, y=0-5) in the frequency region of 2500-3200 cm−1. As the binding affinities of the solvent molecules and the number of the solvent molecules in the clusters increased, the scrambling of CH5+ slowed down substantially. The structures of the solvated carbonium ions and the evidence for rapid proton transfer in CH5+(CH4) were also presented. Chapter Five presents the vib-rotational spectrum for the H-H stretching mode of the silanium ion SiH5+. The results suggested that SiH5+ can be described as a complex of SiH3+ and a freely internally rotating H2, analogous to, but distinct from CH5+.

Book Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters written by Martina H. Havenith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to give an introduction to intermolecular forces from an experimental point of view. Within the last 10 years the interest has turned more and more into an understanding of the weak, but important, int- molecular forces. New experimental techniques have been developed which have helped to gain more insight into this interesting topic. This book is intended as an introduction for graduate students who are familiar with the main concepts of n~olecular spectroscopy. Special emphasis will be laid on the theoretical concepts. After a detailed description of experimental techniques, the results for two prototype systems which have been the subject of several studies in the literature within recent years will be presented. Ar-CO is becoming the most extensively studied van der Waals complex, theoretically and experimentally. Nevertheless, this example shows that even though the theory has greatly improved and has helped us to improve our knowledge of intermolecular forces, even for relatively simple cases the theory car1 still fall short of an accurate description. For a long time (NH3)2 was considered as a prototype for hydrogen bo- ing. However, subsequent experimental and theoretical studies have revealed the mysteries of the obtained spectra and proved that our previous concept of hydrogen bonds was just too naive.

Book Clusters of Atoms and Molecules II

Download or read book Clusters of Atoms and Molecules II written by Hellmut Haberland and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-08-26 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cluster science studies the transition from atomic, and molecular physics or chemistry to the science and technology of condensed matter. Two main topics from this large field will be emphasized in this second volume of Atomic and Molecular Clusters. After an Introduction, Chap. 2 deals mainly with molecular clusters, how they react to positive or negative charges (Sect. 2.1 to 2.5), how they decompose and how they can be charged (Sect. 2.6 and 2.7), and how one can do chemistry with them (2.8 and 2.9). Clusters in contact with a macroscopic medium are treated in Chap. 3. It is from this domain that one can expect possible new applications of cluster science. The optical spectra of silver clusters in a dielectric medium are discussed in Sect. 3.1. Their properties have since long been used unknowingly to stain glass windows. Large clusters floating in an ambient pressure gas are called aerosols (Sect. 3.2). Their properties can be used to monitor air pollution. Development of a photographic film is due to supported silver clusters in a liquid environment (Sect. 3.3). Large semiconductor clusters, also called "quantum dots", have novel optical and electronic properties (Sect. 3.4). The optical properties of large clusters, in general, are reviewed in Sect. 3.5, and properties of clusters supported on clean surfaces are discussed in Sect. 3.6.

Book Gas Phase IR Spectroscopy and Structure of Biological Molecules

Download or read book Gas Phase IR Spectroscopy and Structure of Biological Molecules written by Anouk M. Rijs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field. Review articles for the individual volumes are invited by the volume editors. Readership: research chemists at universities or in industry, graduate students.
