Book Infrared Signatures from Atmospheric Clouds

Download or read book Infrared Signatures from Atmospheric Clouds written by Alan C. Stanton and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds are an important source of variations in the IR background radiation was detected by satellite surveillance systems, because clouds absorb and scatter solar radiation and have a blackbody temperature different from that of the earth's surface. In the present study, a model which describes the scattering, absorption, and emission of radiation by atmospheric water or ice clouds is synthesized from previous works on the scattering of solar radiation. The cloud model is combined with the LOWTRAN atmospheric transmission model and is used to predict the apparent spectral radiance from scenes containing clouds as detected by a downward-looking observer. The effects of solar scatter, thermal emission, transmitted upwelling radiation, and atmospheric attenuation are included. Calculations using the model have been compared with infrared cloud data from several sources, including radiometer data from the BAMM (Balloon Altitude Mosaic Measurements) Program. These analyses suggest that low altitude cumulus clouds are not an important source of background signal variations in the 2.7-3.1 micrometer region. The BAMM data and model calculations indicate that high altitude cirrus clouds can cause large spatial variations in the background signal in this wavelength region, due to enhanced solar scatter in the wings of the water vapor absorption bands.

Book Evaluation of Infrared Emission of Clouds and Ground as Measured by Weather Satellites

Download or read book Evaluation of Infrared Emission of Clouds and Ground as Measured by Weather Satellites written by Clifford Dalton Kern and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of prime interest are the radiation data from that portion of the infrared spectrum known as the atmospheric water-vapor window, ranging from about 8 to 12 microns. Infrared signals received by weather satellites and aircraft depend, in clear air, on surface temperature, atmospheric interference and surface emissivity. For the latter, very different data in literature are found for clouds, water, rocks, etc. In this report correct emissivity data were sought in three ways: (1) Reflectivity of polished rock samples was tested in an infrared spectrograph for 5-16 microns wavelength. Using Kirchhoff's law this method yielded emissivities for near normal incidence. (2) Using an 8-13 microns sensitive radiometer and an aggregate, called emissivity box, the emissivity of many surfaces was measured directly. (3) A summer noon time flight of Tiros over the Mediterranean and the Sahara was evaluated.

Book Optical Infrared Signatures for Space Based Remote Sensing

Download or read book Optical Infrared Signatures for Space Based Remote Sensing written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes work carried out under the Air Force Research Laboratory's basic research task in optical remote-sensing signatures, entitled Optical / Infrared Signatures for Space-Based Remote Sensing. The work was carried out during the period 20 Mar 2000 - 30 Sep 2007 and was supported by funding from AFOSR's Physics and Electronics Directorate (AFOSR/NE). The objective of the program was to increase understanding of remotely sensed signatures, particularly as seen by spaceborne optical/infrared sensors. Emphasis was placed on understanding the radiance environment of the structured upper atmosphere of the earth (mesosphere and thermosphere) in terms of the structure of the underlying medium. Advances in non-LTE radiative transfer and atmospheric waves and localized excitations are detailed, as well as analysis and modeling of the databases resulting from two groundbreaking space infrared experiments, DoD MSX/SPIRIT III and NASA TIMED/SABER.

Book Atlas and Catalogue of Infrared Sources in the Magellanic Clouds

Download or read book Atlas and Catalogue of Infrared Sources in the Magellanic Clouds written by P.B. Schwering and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the beginning of the sixteenth century, Portuguese and Dutch sailors first ventured into southern seas. With their keen navigational interest in the skies, they noted the continuous presence of two cloud-like features, not far from the almost immediately Southern Pole. The first literature mention of these 'clouds' was in the journal written in 1520 by the Italian navigator Pigafetta on the first circumnavigation of the globe by Magalhaes (c/. Pigafetta et ai. , 1962). In honour of this exploit, the objects have since become known as the Magellanic Clouds, although the Dutch name 'Kaapsche Wolken' (Cape Clouds - after the Cape of Good Hope) has also been in use for centuries. The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds are dwarf irregular galaxies, orbiting our own Milky Way Galaxy, presently at distances of 53 and 63 kpc respectively (Humphreys, 1984) . . They are the galaxies nearest to us: most other Local Group galaxies are of order ten times more distant. The LMC and SMC are also the prototypical blue dwarf irregulars, representatives of a class of objects in which several hundred more distant objects are now known. Their masses are a few per cent of the mass of the Milky Way Galaxy, but they are relatively gas-rich and appear to be, at the present epoch, forming stars at a more prodiguous rate than our Galaxy (c/. Lequeux, 1984).

Book Retrieval of Cloud cleared Atmospheric Temperature Profiles from Hyperspectral Infrared and Microwave Observations

Download or read book Retrieval of Cloud cleared Atmospheric Temperature Profiles from Hyperspectral Infrared and Microwave Observations written by William Joseph Blackwell and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) Validation of the simulation results with NAST observations was hampered by the lack of a statistically-diverse data set accompanied by cloud truth. An upper bound on cloud-clearing performance (NEAT) was estimated to be approximately a factor of two worse than the simulation results accompanied by ground truth. An improvement of approximately 25 percent in RMS radiance cloud-clearing performance was realized by rejecting 20 percent of soundings based on a neural network-derived metric.
