Book Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Clusters written by Martina H. Havenith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to give an introduction to intermolecular forces from an experimental point of view. Within the last 10 years the interest has turned more and more into an understanding of the weak, but important, int- molecular forces. New experimental techniques have been developed which have helped to gain more insight into this interesting topic. This book is intended as an introduction for graduate students who are familiar with the main concepts of n~olecular spectroscopy. Special emphasis will be laid on the theoretical concepts. After a detailed description of experimental techniques, the results for two prototype systems which have been the subject of several studies in the literature within recent years will be presented. Ar-CO is becoming the most extensively studied van der Waals complex, theoretically and experimentally. Nevertheless, this example shows that even though the theory has greatly improved and has helped us to improve our knowledge of intermolecular forces, even for relatively simple cases the theory car1 still fall short of an accurate description. For a long time (NH3)2 was considered as a prototype for hydrogen bo- ing. However, subsequent experimental and theoretical studies have revealed the mysteries of the obtained spectra and proved that our previous concept of hydrogen bonds was just too naive.

Book Ion and Cluster Ion Spectroscopy and Structure

Download or read book Ion and Cluster Ion Spectroscopy and Structure written by J. P. Maier and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1989 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid and impressive advances have been made in recent years in the spectroscopy and structure of ion and ionic clusters. This new multi-author volume provides an up-to-date and in-depth coverage of the progress made, the present knowledge, and the state-of-the art of the field. The first chapter deals with the developments and application of the Coulomb explosion technique for the determination of the geometric structure of polyatomic cations. This is followed by a review of the structural information obtained by microwave techniques on cations and of their radioastronomical studies. Of the next three chapters, two deal with theoretical approaches to predict spectroscopic data on ions, and the third deals with the experimental measurements using infrared laser methods. The next chapter covers progress in the area of high resolution photodetachment studies on anions using laser-ion beam methods. The techniques and results described in the following chapter are concerned with the investigations of open-shell cations by means of their electronic transitions. The latter chapters focus on the study of ionic clusters and complexes.

Book Infrared Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy of Hydrocarbon Ions and Clusters in Fast Ion Beams

Download or read book Infrared Cavity Ringdown Spectroscopy of Hydrocarbon Ions and Clusters in Fast Ion Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this effort were as follows: (1) extend the technical development of pulsed infrared (IR) cavity ringdown spectroscopy to longer wavelengths and higher spectral resolution; (2) develop its capacity as a general tool for trace gas analysis; and (3) study spectra, structures, hydrogen tunneling dynamics of hydrocarbon ions and complexes of relevance to ion-enhanced combustion processes. High-resolution, pulsed infrared cavity ringdown laser spectroscopy was developed and implemented for the study of carbon clusters and hydrocarbon ions. Several supersonic molecular beam sources of ions and hydrocarbons were constructed and tested by infrared cavity ringdown spectroscopy. The Stokes downconversion of pulsed visible laser radiation into the mid-infrared was explored in solid and liquid hydrogen media in an effort to explore more powerful and convenient infrared sources. Cavity ringdown studies of several different carbon/hydrocarbon systems were carried out. Nine related publications and three conference presentations are listed.

Book Study of Cluster Ions by Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy

Download or read book Study of Cluster Ions by Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy written by Arvind Kumar Saxena and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course of experiments described in this book are focused to provide insight into the production of atomic, molecular and mixed clusters from solid and gas, investigation of difference in the ionization mechanisms of clusters subjected to high intensity laser pulses. Carbon cluster sources based on sputtering and laser ablation are developed to generate a beam of clusters. The formation of carbon clusters in the sooting environment is confirmed using optical emission spectroscopy. Clusters heavier than dimer are detected by a linear time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometer. Neutral clusters are generated by a pulsed nozzle source. Clusters are ionized by IR and UV laser pulses of a nanosecond Nd: YAG laser. Xenon clusters, Ethyl alcohol clusters and mixed clusters of Ethyl alcohol, Water vapor and Benzene are generated using pulsed nozzle source. Apart from the development of cluster sources, the difference in the ionization mechanism of Xenon clusters under IR and UV irradiation is studied. The difference in the ionization mechanism provides a tool to study the effect of cluster size on the ionization processes in MultiPhoton Ionizion of Xenon clusters
