Book Infrared Horizon Sensor Accuracy in the Atmospheric Absorption Bands

Download or read book Infrared Horizon Sensor Accuracy in the Atmospheric Absorption Bands written by M. D. Earle and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis has been made of atmospheric radiance data which were computed by the Weather Bureau based on a variety of atmospheric models. Narrow spectral regions, located within the carbon dioxide absorption band centered at 15 microns, have been considered. It is shown that a spectral band approximately 1.7 microns wide centered very close to the absorption band shows promise, when the data is properly processed, of providing 1 Sigma horizon sensor accuracies of about 0.05 degrees. A 'two color' technique involving the use of two spectral regions in the vicinity of the CO2 absorption band is discussed. The possibility of using the 28.6 to 40.0 micron spectral region within the broad rotational water vapor absorption band is also considered. (Author).

Book Conceptual Design and Analysis of an Infrared Horizon Sensor with Compensation for Atmospheric Variability

Download or read book Conceptual Design and Analysis of an Infrared Horizon Sensor with Compensation for Atmospheric Variability written by Antony Jalink and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A horizon detection logic, based on a ratio-of-integrated-radiance concept, which detects the earth's horizon at a relatively stable height under all geographic and meteorological conditions was evaluated by computer simulation on a body of synthesized radiance profiles. An error-sensitivity analysis of the concept was performed, and optimum design parameter values for a sensor were determined. A conceptual design for an improved 15 micron sensor based on this analysis is discussed.

Book Measurement of the Infrared Horizon of the Earth

Download or read book Measurement of the Infrared Horizon of the Earth written by R. G. Walker and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiance measurements of the Earth's horizon in three infrared spectral regions were made during two Aerobee rocket flights at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Preliminary results indicate equivalent blackbody radiation temperatures in the CO2 band (14.0 - 15.6 microns) varied from 231K to 239K; in the atmospheric window region (10.2 - 11.8 microns) from 205K to 287K; and in the rotational water vapor band (19.5 - 31.8 microns) from 206K to 239K. Numerous dropouts due to clouds are apparent in the atmospheric window and water vapor bands, while no such effect is evident in the CO2 band. The infrared radiometer, stellar aspect sensor and vehicle attitude control system are described, and actual traces of the horizon profiles and outputs from the stellar aspect system are included. Book High Spectral Resolution Infrared Remote Sensing for Earth s Weather and Climate Studies

Download or read book High Spectral Resolution Infrared Remote Sensing for Earth s Weather and Climate Studies written by Alain Chedin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of major challenges facing Earth's science in the next decade and beyondis the development of an accurate long term observational data set to study global change. To accomplish this, a wide range of observations will be required to provide both new measurements, not previously achievable and measurements with a greater degreee of accuracy and resolution than the ones which are presently and currently available. Among the parameters that are currently retrieved from satellite vertical sounding observations, temperature and moisture profiles are the most important for the description of the thermodynamic state of the medium. Other parameters, like those describing the cloud fields, the surface state or the conditions close to the surface are also key parameters for meteorology and climatology. A new generation of high spectral atmospheric sounders in the infrared has recently been designed to provide both new and more accurate data about the atmosphere, land and oceans for application to climate studies. Among the important observations that these instruments should contribute to the climate data set are day and night global measurements of: atmospheric temperature profiles; relative humidity profiles; cloud field parameters; total ozone burden of the atmosphere; distribution of minor atmospehric gases (methane, carbonmonoxide and nitrous oxide).

Book Investigation of the 60 GHz Atmospheric Oxygen Mantle for Application to Vertical Sensing

Download or read book Investigation of the 60 GHz Atmospheric Oxygen Mantle for Application to Vertical Sensing written by Donald A. Guidice and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feasibility of a microwave vertical sensor depends on the uniformity of the radiometric temperature of the earth's O2 mantle at some operating frequency in the 60-GHz(5-mm wavelength) range. The essential properties of passive vertical sensors are examined. The characteristics of the 5 mm O2-band emission from the earth's atmosphere are analyzed. The potential accuracy of a 60 GHz O2-band vertical sensor is determined, considering both instrumental and O2 mantle uniformity limitations. To take the data required to evaluate the O2 mantle uniformity, a downward-looking radiometric instrument operating at 60.80 GHz was designed and built by Ewen-Knight Corporation. The design of the instrument is analyzed from the atmospheric physics and the instrument engineering viewpoints. The instrument, designated Experiment CRLF 739, was accepted for flight aboard the OAR satellite OV1-86; the details of interfacing the instrument with OV1-86 are discussed. (Author).
