Book Infrared Detection with High Tc Bolometers and Response of Nb Tunnel Junctions to Picosecond Voltage Pulses

Download or read book Infrared Detection with High Tc Bolometers and Response of Nb Tunnel Junctions to Picosecond Voltage Pulses written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxide superconductors with high critical temperature [Tc] make sensitive thermometers for several types of infrared bolometers. The authors built composite bolometers with YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][delta]] thermometers on sapphire substrates which have higher sensitivity than competing thermal detectors which operate at temperatures above 77 K.A 1 x 1 mm bolometer with gold black serving as the radiation absorber has useful sensitivity for wavelengths 20--100 [mu]m. A 3 x 3 mm bolometer with a bismuth film as the absorber operates from 20--100 [mu]m. High-[Tc] bolometers which are fabricated with micromachining techniques on membranes of Si or Si[sub 3]N[sub 4] have potential application to large-format arrays which are used for infrared imaging. A nonisothermal high-[Tc] bolometer can be fabricated on a membrane of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) which is in thermal contact with the heat sink along the perimeter of the membrane. A thermal analysis indicates that the YSZ membrane bolometer can have improved sensitivity compared to the sapphire bolometer for spectrometer applications. The quasiparticle tunneling current in a superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junction is highly nonlinear in the applied voltage. The authors have made the first measurement of the linear response of the quasiparticle current in a Nb/AlO[sub x]/Nb junction over a broad bandwidth from 75--200 GHz. Nonlinear measurements made with these pulses may provide information about the quasiparticle lifetime. Preliminary data from such measurements are presented.

Book Infrared Detectors

Download or read book Infrared Detectors written by T. S. Moss and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared Detectors is a collection of papers presented at a meeting of the U.S. Speciality Group on Infrared Detectors and deals with a variety of topics related to infrared detectors, such as PbSnTe diodes and detectors, charge coupled devices (CCD), photodiodes, and HgCdTe photoconductive detectors. This text has 11 chapters; the first of which investigates the effects of ionizing radiation on CCDs in order to assess their signal processing advantages in a high natural (Van Allen belt) or artificially induced radiation environment. Attention then turns to defects suffered by n-type HgCdTe due to electron irradiation; thermal recovery processes in HgCdTe and PbSnTe photovoltaic detectors; and thermal limitations in PbSnTe detectors. The following papers present experiments that examine the performance of PbSnTe diodes at moderately reduced backgrounds; preparation of vapor grown lead-tin telluride for 8–14 micrometer photodiodes; and detectivity limits for diffused junction PbSnTe detectors. The optical immersion of HgCdTe photoconductive detectors and far infrared atmospheric transmission measurements conducted in North-Norway are also addressed. This book will be of interest to researchers and students who want to have a better understanding of how infrared detectors work.

Book Development of Josephson Junctions and Arrays as Infrared Detectors for an Image Processor

Download or read book Development of Josephson Junctions and Arrays as Infrared Detectors for an Image Processor written by S. Baliga and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optical response of Nb-Al0x-Nb Josephson junctions and series arrays of such junctions has been studied in the 1 to 20 micron region of the infrared. Gap suppression on irradiation has been observed, leading to ultra-high sensitivities of order of 100,000 Volt/Watt. Such high responsivities are not possible over an entire wavelength range using conventional technologies. The devices are found to show linear response even at ultra-low intensities of order 200 femtoWatts/device. Attempts have been made to further improve the external quantum efficiency and voltage responsitivity of the devices by using counterelectrodes with lower reflectivities. The high quantum efficiencies (S100) of the devices may be explained by the creation of quasi-particles by the incident photon, and a further increase in quasi-particle number density by interaction with phonons.
