Book The City as a Terminal

Download or read book The City as a Terminal written by Markus Hesse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The on-time delivery of goods is regarded as a primary factor of the urban economy and is being monitored by businesses and government alike. However, much analysis of freight transportation and the flow of goods into, out of and within urban areas focuses on functional, business-related approaches. This book examines the interrelationship between logistics development on one hand and urban development and geographical issues, such as land use and location, on the other. Avoiding certain one-dimensional views on 'logistics impacts on the city', it discloses the complex interaction of the logistics system with the entire urban environment. It also bridges the gap between recent geographical research into new production systems and (post)modern consumption patterns. Illustrated with case studies from the United States, Germany, France, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom, it examines issues such as: the historical nexus between urban areas and logistics; current urban developments with regards to goods distribution; city-region related characteristics of freight flows; locational dynamics; and specific freight related urban problems and conflicts.

Book Transforming Urban Waterfronts

Download or read book Transforming Urban Waterfronts written by Gene Desfor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In port cities around the world, waterfront development projects have been hailed both as spaces of promise and as crucial territorial wedges in twenty-first century competitive growth strategies. Frequently, these mega-projects have been intended to transform derelict docklands into communities of hope with sustainable urban economies—economies intended to both compete in and support globally-networked hierarchies of cities. This collection engages with major theoretical debates and empirical findings on the ways waterfronts transform and have been transformed in port-cities in North and South America, Europe, the Caribbean. It is organized around the themes of fixities (built environments, institutional and regulatory structures, and cultural practices) and flows (information, labor, capital, energy, and knowledge), which are key categories for understanding processes of change. By focusing on these fixities and flows, the contributors to this volume develop new insights for understanding both historical and current cases of change on urban waterfronts, those special areas of cities where land and water meet. As such, it will be a valuable resource for teaching faculty, students, and any audience interested in a broad scope of issues within the field of urban studies.

Book Cinema Beyond the City

Download or read book Cinema Beyond the City written by Judith Thissen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinema is often perceived as a metropolitan medium – an entertainment product of the big city and for the big city. Yet film exhibitors have been bringing moving pictures to towns and villages since the early days of itinerant shows. This volume presents for the first time an exploration of the social, cultural and economic dynamics of film culture in the European countryside. Spanning more than a century of film exhibition from the early twentieth-century to the present day, Cinema Beyond the City examines the role that movie-going has played in small-town and rural communities across Europe. It documents an amazing diversity of sites and situations that are relevant for understanding historical and current patterns in film consumption. In chapters written by leading scholars and young academics, interdisciplinary research is used to address key questions about access, economic viability, audience behaviour, film programming and the cultural flows between cities and hinterlands. With its wide range of regional studies and innovative methodological approaches, the collection will be of interest not only to film historians, but also to scholars in the fields of urban history, rural studies and cultural geography.

Book Transnationalism and the German City

Download or read book Transnationalism and the German City written by J. Diefendorf and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, scholars treat transnationalism as a conflict in which the local, regional, and national give way to globalized identity. As these varied studies of German cities show, though, the urban environment is actually a site of trans-localism that is not merely oppositional, but that adapts itself dialectically to the forces of globalization.

Book Southern Europe

Download or read book Southern Europe written by Martin Baumeister and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Education Space and Urban Planning

Download or read book Education Space and Urban Planning written by Angela Million and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a range of practical developments that are happening in education as conducted in urban settings across different scales. It contains insights that draw upon the fields of urban planning/urbanism, geography, architecture, education and pedagogy. It brings together current thinking and practical experience from German and international perspectives. This discussion is organised in four segments: schools and the neighbourhood; education and the neighbourhood; education and the city and finally, education and the region. Contributors cover a wide range of contemporary and significant socio-political aspects of education over the last decade. They reinforce emergent thinking that space and its urban context are important dimensions of education. This book also underscores the need for more research in the relationships between education and urban development itself. Current urban planning does not fully connect our understanding in education with what we know in the spatial and planning sciences. Accordingly, this release is an early attempt to bring together a growing body of integrated and interdisciplinary reflection on education theory and practice.

Book Zentralit t und Raumgef ge der Grossst dte im 20 Jahrhundert

Download or read book Zentralit t und Raumgef ge der Grossst dte im 20 Jahrhundert written by Clemens Zimmermann and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
