Download or read book Information Relating to the Pottery Industry in Japan Classic Reprint written by National Council of the Potter Industry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Information Relating to the Pottery Industry in Japan The distinction made in the Questionnaire between China and General earthenware is difficult to observe in dealing with Japanese ceramics. The Japanese distinguish between Earthenware, which corresponds to the English classification, and porcelain. Intermediate between these two is the modern manufacture (confined to one or two firms) of what is called in Japan Hard Earthenware, a generic term corresponding to faience or semi-porcelain but commercially applied t0'an Ironstone China. Apart from this, there is very little export ware that would come under the heading General Earthenware in Japan, and the following account may be taken to refer to China Porcelain) exclusively unless otherwise specifically stated. Your reviewer remarks upon the translations of the numerous marks and signatures which I have given, without, however, pointing out any errors. The perfect transliteration of the characters used by Japanese potters is a matter on which no foreigner living may dogmati'ze, indeed, various meanings may properly be assigned to many of these characters; but I feel no doubt whatever that the renderings of the marks in my volume are substantially correct, for they have been passed under review by four accomplished native scholars. Download or read book Catalogue of the Morse Collection of Japanese Pottery Classic Reprint written by Edward S. Morse and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Morse Collection of Japanese Pottery The collection of Japanese pottery herein briefly catalogued has been brought together by one collector, who throughout the task (which is by no means ended) has had in view certain definite objects. One of these objects, and the main one, has been to make a collection of the pottery of Japan which should parallel the famous collections of the potteries of England, Holland, France, and adjacent countries, as seen in the museums of Europe. In the great museums of art in Paris, Berlin, and other places, one may find the pottery of the various countries of Europe fully represented. These collections often represent the ovens and signatures known from the earliest time to the latest. Turning to Japan, the greatest pottery-producing country in the world, one often finds in a case labeled "Oriental Porcelain" a small collection of miscellaneous pieces, with highly decorated specimens made for the foreign market predominating, and these not unusually mingled with the fictile products of China. In France, for example, one may find in her great museums extensive collections of English pottery from Chelsea, Leeds, Staffordshire, Burslam, and other pottery centres, including, of course, representations of all the great potters such as Astbury, Elers, and Wedgwood, as well as the work of the minor potters. Turning from these cases to the Japanese section, if by good fortune the museum possesses one, the contrast is striking. Such an absence of due proportion would be paralleled by a general zoological museum displaying, for example, a complete collection of European and North American insects, and for South America possessing a few bright butterflies and the elytra of metallic-lustred beetles mounted as jewelry. Book The Japanese Pottery Handbook

Download or read book The Japanese Pottery Handbook written by Penny Simpson and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese Pottery Handbook, first published by Kodansha in 1979, has become a classic, beloved by anyone interested in pottery for its practical, step-by-step approach, and homespun charm. Now, thirty-five years since its publication, authors Penny Simpson and Lucy Kitto have refreshed their work, expanding and adding to the material, re-designing the pages, and re-drawing many of the delightful illustrations. The book has a cleaner, more modern look, yet retains the simple, friendly, and distinctively Japanese sensibility of the original. In addition to the new layout and drawings, the authors have tweaked the text and expanded several sections (including the discussion of underglazing and overglazing, and the Tea Ceremony and its utensils). There’s also a new page showing different types of brushes; and the Information chapter has been updated to include websites and recent books. The book is a manual to the way pots are made in Japan, their forms, and their decorations. The authors give a thorough account of both traditional and modern techniques and also describe in detail tools, materials, glazes, and the setup of workshops and kilns. Lucy Kiitto’s sprightly drawings infuse each page with life and clarity. Pottery terms and expressions are listed with their Japanese equivalents, and the new edition keeps the bi-lingual text, making it easier for the exchange of ideas between foreign students studying in Japan and Japanese potters.

Download or read book Japan Its History Arts and Literature Vol 8 written by F. Brinkley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Its History Arts and Literature, Vol. 8: Keramic Art Civilisation was brought to Japan by a Mongoloid invasion or immigration at a date which historians have hitherto failed to fix with any accuracy, but which was certainly several centuries probably six or seven - before the Christian era. The new-comers did not represent an advanced stage Of material prog ress. They knew nothing of iron, and used only bronze implements, and their keramic successes were confined to the production of rude, hand-made pot tery, scarcely superior to that of the aborigines men tioned above. What is known of these earliest Mongoloid invaders has been gathered from the con tents of the mounds in which they buried their dead. Following them at an interval of probably five cen turies it is still necessary to avoid explicitness came another tide of Mongoloid invaders, who brought with them a knowledge of iron-smelting and of the potter's wheel, and whose ideas Of form and decoration indicated a much higher grade of civ ilisation than that of their predecessors. The story of these second comers does not exist in the pages of history. It is told only by the dolmens which they constructed for purposes of interment, and as to the contents of those dolmens mention need not be made here of anything but pottery. Download or read book The Secrets of the Japanese Government Classic Reprint written by Otto Frederick Wegener and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secrets of the Japanese Government The manifesto further says that the great Japanese race has a brilliant future before it, through some achievement which is a secret to all the world, but which, in due time, will be performed. If Japan be justly entitled to such claim, she certainly must be able to show some accomplishments during her past history, which promise such a future. But the his tory of Japan, from the creation of the Empire to the time of its modernization, teaches that her people have, in their literature, art, industry, architecture, science, agriculture, and music been the pupils of China and Korea, and excelled their teachers only in a few branches of unimportant ciyilizatory labor, namely, hard pottery, lacquer work, the manufacture of fine silk goods, and decorative metal work. This shows plainly that Japan has, in all her industrial, agricultural and art work, her science and literature, produced nothing in the past that promises brilliant accomplishments in the future.
