Book Guide to Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Guide to Wireless Sensor Networks written by Sudip Misra and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In WSNs, communication takes place with the help of spatially distributedautonomoussensornodesequippedtosensespeci?cinformation. WSNs, especially the ones that have gained much popularity in the recent years, are, ty- cally, ad hoc in nature and they inherit many characteristics/features of wireless ad hoc networks such as the ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning, and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-con?gure without the involvement of a centralized network manager, router, access point, or a switch. These features help to set up WSNs fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a ?xed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief - erations. WSNs ?nd a variety of applications in both the military and the civilian population worldwide such as in cases of enemy intrusion in the battle?eld, object tracking, habitat monitoring, patient monitoring, ?re detection, and so on. Even though sensor networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to coverage and deployment, scalability, quality-of-service, size, computational power, energy ef?ciency, and security.

Book On Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book On Wireless Sensor Networks written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a valuable technology to support a huge range of applications spanning from military to commercial, such as battlefield surveillance, habitat monitoring, forest fire detection, disaster salvage, and inventory control management. It has the capability to reveal previously unobservable phenomena in the physical world and significant flexibility of installation and manipulation. The major challenges of WSNs design come from the requirements of energy constraint, distributed control and scalability. In this thesis we studied three topics on WSNs. The first one was energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol design. We proposed a MAC protocol which schedules the send and receive times for all nodes within the network. As all nodes only wake up when they send or receive, significant energy is saved by reducing idle listening, collisions and overhearing. And we evaluated the protocol performance by using the GloMoSim simulator. The second topic was about distributed transmission power control of wireless sensor nodes. We proposed a simple scheme which employs request-to-send (RTS) and clear-to-send (CTS) frames to exchange channel gain information, based on which concurrent senders determine their own transmission power without a central controller to coordinate them. Simulation results showed that our scheme can save 30% to 50% of the energy, and also reduce transmissionlatency. The third topic was on event detection. Due to the fact that wireless sensor nodes are spatially distributed throughout the area of interest, this application has to been implemented in distributed form. We proposed a scheme which does not need a pre-designated fusion node, and this greatly improves network scalability. We provided close-form expressions to estimate the probabilities of detection failure and false alarm, and validated them by extensive simulation.

Book Information Processing and Management

Download or read book Information Processing and Management written by Vinu V Das and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 693 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is my pleasure to write the preface for Information Processing and Management. This book aims to bring together innovative results and new research trends in inf- mation processing, computer science and management engineering. If an information processing system is able to perform useful actions for an obj- tive in a given domain, it is because the system knows something about that domain. The more knowledge it has, the more useful it can be to its users. Without that kno- edge, the system itself is useless. In the information systems field, there is conceptual modeling for the activity that elicits and describes the general knowledge a particular information system needs to know. The main objective of conceptual modeling is to obtain that description, which is called a conceptual schema. Conceptual schemas are written in languages called conceptual modeling languages. Conceptual modeling is an important part of requi- ments engineering, the first and most important phase in the development of an inf- mation system.

Book Wireless Sensor Networks Routing Protocol Overview

Download or read book Wireless Sensor Networks Routing Protocol Overview written by Madhumathy Perumal and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, language: English, abstract: Sensor nodes have restricted storage, computational and energy resources, these restrictions place a limit on the types of deployable routing mechanisms. Routing protocol disseminates information that enables the sensor nodes to select routes to communicate with other nodes on the network and the choice of the route is determined by the routing algorithms. Thus the routing protocol helps the nodes to gain knowledge about the topology of the network to which it is attached directly. There are mainly two types of routing processes: one is static routing and the other is dynamic routing. In a static routing, the routing tables are set up in a static manner in the nodes. The network routes for the packet are initially set between the nodes. However, if any node on the specified route fails, the data may not reach the destination. In a dynamic routing, routing tables in the routers often change whenever the possible routes change. Dynamic routing is more suitable as the nodes in WSNs may frequently change their position and die at any moment. The routing protocols are classified into single hop and multi hop routing. In a single hop routing, sensor node directly communicates with the sink to share the gathered information. Energy consumption is high in the network using single hop protocol. In multi hop routing, data is routed through the intermediate nodes to the base station. Each node transfers sensed data to the immediate node which in turn transfers the data to the next immediate node and finally the data reaches the base station. Energy consumption in this kind of routing protocol is less and thus the lifetime of the nodes is high. The major challenge to the efficient operation of wireless sensor network lies in its ability to deliver the sensed information from the nodes to the sink within the specific time duration without the loss of data packets
