This book was released on 1990 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores problems in educating deaf, deaf/blind, and deaf/multi-handicapped children. It includes two comparative, descriptive case studies based on site visitations. The author's findings supported her three original hypotheses: 1) disagreement in educational approach is decreasing concurrent with a shift toward total communication, 2) insufficient text and ancillary materials result in fragmented curricula, and, 3) although computer hardware is available, computer training for staff and appropriate software are lacking.

Book Evidence Based Practice in Educating Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

Download or read book Evidence Based Practice in Educating Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students written by Patricia Elizabeth Spencer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates about methods of supporting language development and academic skills of deaf or hard-of-hearing children have waxed and waned for more than 100 years: Will using sign language interfere with learning to use spoken language or does it offer optimal access to communication for deaf children? Does placement in classrooms with mostly hearing children enhance or impede academic and social-emotional development? Will cochlear implants or other assistive listening devices provide deaf children with sufficient input for age-appropriate reading abilities? Are traditional methods of classroom teaching effective for deaf and hard-of-hearing students? Although there is a wealth of evidence with regard to each of these issues, too often, decisions on how to best support deaf and hard-of-hearing children in developing language and academic skills are made based on incorrect or incomplete information. No matter how well-intentioned, decisions grounded in opinions, beliefs, or value judgments are insufficient to guide practice. Instead, we need to take advantage of relevant, emerging research concerning best practices and outcomes in educating deaf and hard-of-hearing learners. In this critical evaluation of what we know and what we do not know about educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students, the authors examine a wide range of educational settings and research methods that have guided deaf education in recent years--or should. The book provides a focus for future educational and research efforts, and aims to promote optimal support for deaf and hard-of-hearing learners of all ages. Co-authored by two of the most respected leaders in the field, this book summarizes and evaluates research findings across multiple disciplines pertaining to the raising and educating of deaf children, providing a comprehensive but concise record of the successes, failures, and unanswered questions in deaf education. A readily accessible and invaluable source for teachers, university students, and other professionals, Evidence-Based Practice in Educating Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students encourages readers to reconsider assumptions and delve more deeply into what we really know about deaf and hard-of-hearing children, their patterns of development, and their lifelong learning.

Book Teaching Hearing impaired Children in Regular Classrooms

Download or read book Teaching Hearing impaired Children in Regular Classrooms written by Peter M. Blackwell and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is designed to assist regular classroom teachers in helping the hearing impaired child to master the English language. It is noted that the hearing impaired population is not homogenous. Different factors involved in the decision to place a hearing impaired child in a regular classroom are considered. The types of language problems hearing impaired children experience are enumerated, including problems with the function and structure of language. The need for a comprehensive assessment and the development of an individualized education program for hearing impaired children are highlighted. The assessment should include psychological, medical, audiological, and speech and language evaluations conducted by qualified professionals. Language programming at the elementary and secondary school levels is discussed with emphasis on the establishment of appropriate goals. It is concluded that whatever the reason for placing a hearing impaired student in a regular classroom, the task of helping that child move through the difficult process of mastering the English language is a great responsibility. Book Issues Unresolved

Download or read book Issues Unresolved written by Amatzia Weisel and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the more than 400 studies presented at the 18th International Congress on Education of the Deaf, the 20 most incisive papers were selected, rewritten, and edited to construct the trenchant volume Issues Unresolved: New Perspectives on Language and Deaf Education. The resulting book provocatively challenges the invested reader in four critical areas of deaf education worldwide. Part 1, Communication: Signed and Spoken Languages, addresses matters that range from considering critical periods for language acquisition, researched by Susan D. Fischer, to assessing the impact of immigration policies on the ethnic composition of Australia's deaf community, intriguing work by Jan Branson and Don Miller. Part 2, Communication: Accessibility to Speech, continues the debate with works on the perception of speech by deaf and hard of hearing children, contributed by Arthur Boothroyd, and automatic speech recognition and its applications, delineated by Harry Levitt. Educational issues are brought to the forefront in Part 3 in such engrossing studies as Lea Lurie and Alex Kozulin's discourse on the application of an instrumental-enrichment cognitive intervention program with deaf immigrant children from Ethiopia. Stephen Powers offers another perspective in this section with his retrospective evaluation of a distance education training course for teachers of the deaf. Part 4, Psychological and Social Adjustment reviews progress in this area, with Anne de Klerk's exposition on the Rotterdam Deaf Awareness Program, and Corinne J. Lewkowitz and Lynn S. Liben's research on the development of deaf and hearing children's sex-role attitudes and self-endorsements. These and the many other contributions by renowned international scholars in the field make Issues Unresolved a compelling new standard for all involved in deaf education.
