Book Effects of Alerts on Army Infantry Platoon Leader Decision Making Performance

Download or read book Effects of Alerts on Army Infantry Platoon Leader Decision Making Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future U.S. infantry capabilities, coupled with network-centric warfare concepts, will enable advancements in information distribution and display, and will provide a combat advantage. However, the distribution of large amounts of information, especially to the visual channel may result in information bottlenecks and cognitive overload. Utilizing other human senses such as audition and touch to convey information may help Soldiers manage information, thereby enhancing their performance on the battlefield. In this paper, we describe two studies focused on identifying techniques that aid information management and enhance situational awareness and decision making for operators of future Army Combat systems, specifically, the platoon leader in the infantry command and control vehicle. The first study examined the effects of unimodal alerts on platoon leader decision making and performance. The second study used redundant alerts. This paper emphasizes the background of the research, experimental design, results, and future directions.

Book Effects of Redundant Alerts on Platoon Leader Performance and Decision Making

Download or read book Effects of Redundant Alerts on Platoon Leader Performance and Decision Making written by Andrea S. Krausman and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future U.S. Army capabilities, coupled with network-centric warfare concepts, will enable huge advancements in information distribution and display and will provide a combat advantage. However, conveying information in a manner that enhances Soldiers ability to manage the information and in turn, increases their situational awareness is problematic, especially when we consider the high operational tempo, uncertainty, and stress of combat. Past research suggests that multi-sensory information display may be an effective technique for enhancing the information management and situational understanding of Soldiers. Moreover, using a redundant combination of display modalities may be an effective method of information presentation. A study was conducted to examine the effects of redundant alerts on platoon leader decision making and performance. Eleven platoon leaders completed three simulated missions. During each mission, participants received tactical communications and monitored activity on their displays. Tactical communications were accomplished via digital messaging and voice commands. Some of the digital messages were preceded by a visual, visual + auditory, or visual + tactile alert. Time to respond to each of the digital messages was measured. The results indicate that when a platoon leader is engaged in visually demanding tasks such as scanning displays, response time can be as much as 63% slower for a single visual alert, compared to the redundant alerts. Subjective data indicated that participants thought the visual + auditory and visual + tactile alerts were more effective at getting their attention than the visual alert alone. Applications of this research include the development of display design guidelines that will transition to FCS equipment developers.

Book The First 100 Days of Platoon Leadership Handbook Lessons and Best Practices

Download or read book The First 100 Days of Platoon Leadership Handbook Lessons and Best Practices written by U. S. Army and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The platoon leader and platoon sergeant are two of the most important leaders in the U.S. Army. The way platoon leaders and sergeants work together as a team can cause the success or failure of companies, battalions, brigades, and divisions. They represent the leading edge of leadership on and off the battlefield. On the battlefield, platoon leaders and sergeants build their platoons, empower squad leaders, integrate outside elements, and use troop-leading procedures to plan and lead. Off the battlefield, platoon leaders and sergeants prepare their platoon for combat through tough training. The platoon leader and platoon sergeant's ability to coach, teach, and mentor their Soldiers leads directly to the readiness of our formations. World-wide, platoon leaders and sergeants are personally leading the U.S. Army at the lowest level. This handbook is a guide for new leaders to help prepare them for a critical crucible of leadership that will determine the U.S. Army's ability to fight and win our country's wars.

Book A Procedure for Development of Structured Vignette Training Exercises for Small Groups

Download or read book A Procedure for Development of Structured Vignette Training Exercises for Small Groups written by Charlotte H. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This research product presents a procedure that can be followed to develop small group focused training exercises. It is a specific application of the methodology contained in the Guide to Development of Structured Simulation-Based Training, published by API in 1997. Both that guide and this product are based on work performed under the aspices of the Army Research Institute (ARI) and the Force XXI Training Program. The development effort entitled Combined Arms Operations at Brigade Level, Realistically Achieved Through Simulation (known as COBRAS), resulted in construction of trainign support packages (TSPs) for large scale exercises and for small group vignettes. This product contains examples and explanations that specifically address the construction and evaluation of small group structured exercises. It addresses the use of simulation (live, virtual, and constructive) and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the uses of simulation for small group exercises."--P.i.

Documentation is provided on the analysis, design and development of four staff training products developed under this effort: a Surrogate Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (SC4) System Demonstration, Digital Staff Drills, Team Training Sessions (TTSs) and TTSs Trainer Guide, and refinements to Tactical Decision-Making Exercises (TDXs). The formative evaluation is described for those products with survey results and project team Observations reported by product type. Lessons learned on future staff training are documented and may help direct the Army's effort to develop command and staff training support packages (TSPs) for future forces."--Stinet.

Book Effects of Visual Auditory and Tactile Alerts on Platoon Leader Performance and Decision Making

Download or read book Effects of Visual Auditory and Tactile Alerts on Platoon Leader Performance and Decision Making written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Future Combat System (FCS) proposes the use of advanced communications and technologies that will provide Soldiers with instant access to large amounts of information. Conveying information in a manner that enhances a Soldier's ability to manage the information and, in turn, increases his or her situational awareness is problematic, especially when one considers the high operational tempo, uncertainty, and stress of combat. Past research suggests that multi-sensory information display may be an effective technique for enhancing the information management and situational understanding of Soldiers. A study was conducted to examine the effects of multi-sensory alerts on platoon leader decision making and performance. Twelve platoon leaders completed three simulated missions. Some of the digital messages were preceded by a visual, auditory, or tactile alert. Time to respond to each of the digital messages was measured. The results indicate that when a platoon leader is engaged in visually demanding tasks such as scanning displays, response time can be as much as 54% slower for a visual alert. Subjective data indicated that participants thought the visual alerts were not as effective or helpful as auditory or tactile alerts. Book Back up Training Requirements for the Digitized Battlefield

Download or read book Back up Training Requirements for the Digitized Battlefield written by Margaret S. Salter and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study report provides an overview of critical training issues facing the Army as the 21st% Century Force becomes increasingly digital. The focus of this report is on understanding the significant change brought about by digitization and the ramifications that may result in degraded mode or back-up training requirements. This report is the first of three prepared under the U.S. Army Research Institute's Studies and Analysis effort titled Back-Up Training Requirements for the Digitized Battlefield. Issues and concerns documented in this report are addressed in two subsequent study reports: Analysis of Emerging Digital and Back-Up Training Requirements and Issues and Recommendations: Training the Digital Force. The impetus for this effort was provided by the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel's Directorate of Personnel Technologies. Of concern was the lack of analysis regarding how the Army should address training and sustaining conventional or back-up skills for operations when digital system capabilities become degraded. This issue will become increasingly important as digitization of the force increases and resources decrease."--DITC.

Book Combined Arms Structured Simulation based Training Programs

Download or read book Combined Arms Structured Simulation based Training Programs written by Dorothy L. Finley and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of research and development programs on structured simulation-based training (SST) were conducted during the period 1993-1999. These programs focused on developing SST training Support packages (TSPs) to meet collective training requirements for the combined arms at echelons of brigade and below. An SST development methodology was also produced. The purpose of the methodology was to support future TSP developments as requirements for them are identified. This report represents the second portion of a two-part examination of issues related to SST. The first report described the history of these programs and their lessons learned. This report presents findings in three areas which were either not directly addressed or insufficiently resolved in published SST reports. These areas are: the respective roles of the constructivism and behaviorism/Systems Approach to Training instructional theories in designing the SST TSPs; needs for additional information and SST- related research; and planning and logistical requirements for integrating and maintaining SST as a part of the U.S. Army training system. The information needed to address these three areas was obtained from structured interviews and questionnaires.
