Book The Linguistics of Speech

Download or read book The Linguistics of Speech written by William A. Kretzschmar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful study proposes a unified theory of speech through which conflicting ideas about language might be understood. It is founded on a number of key points, such as the continuum of linguistic behaviour, extensive variation in language features, the importance of regional and social proximity to shared linguistic production, and differential frequency as a key factor in linguistic production both in regional and social groups and in text corpora. The study shows how this new linguistics of speech does not reject rules in favour of language use, or reject language use in favour of rules; rather, it shows how rules can come from language as people use it. Written in a clear, engaging style and containing invaluably accessible introductions to complex theoretical concepts, this work will be of great interest to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, dialectology and corpus linguistics.

Book Atlas of the Arabic Dialects of Galilee Israel

Download or read book Atlas of the Arabic Dialects of Galilee Israel written by Peter Behnstedt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas is based on large-scale fieldwork conducted in Galilee in the mid-nineties of last century. Galilee is the area with the highest percentage of arabophones in Israel and displays a rather complex dialectal situation. The reshuffling of large parts of the population after 1948 led to a considerable degree of dialectal diversity in many places. Moreover, many points of investigation show, besides the notorious Bedouin-sedentary dichotomy, a significant sociolinguistic variation with respect to age, sex, and denomination. The atlas contains seventy-three phonetic and phonologial maps, in addition to eighty morphological and thirty-eight lexical maps.Ten maps deal with the classification of the dialects. The atlas is of interest to semitists, dialectologists and variationists.

Book The BBC

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tom Mills
  • Publisher : Verso Books
  • Release : 2016-11-15
  • ISBN : 1784784850
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book The BBC written by Tom Mills and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BBC: the mouthpiece of the Establishment? The BBC is one of the most important institutions in Britain; it is also one of the most misunderstood. Despite its claim to be independent and impartial, and the constant accusations of a liberal bias, the BBC has always sided with the elite. As Tom Mills demonstrates, we are only getting the news that the Establishment wants aired in public. Throughout its existence, the BBC has been in thrall to those in power. This was true in 1926 when it stood against the workers during the General Strike, and since then the Corporation has continued to mute the voices of those who oppose the status quo: miners in 1984; anti-war protesters in 2003; those who offer alternatives to austerity economics since 2008. From the outset much of its activity has been scrutinised by the secret services at the invitation of those in charge. Since the 1990s the BBC has been integrated into the market, while its independence from government and big business has been steadily eroded. The BBC is an important and timely examination of a crucial public institution that is constantly under threat.
