Book Combat Ready The Eighth U S Army on the Eve of the Korean War

Download or read book Combat Ready The Eighth U S Army on the Eve of the Korean War written by Thomas E. Hanson and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historians and sliders have not been kind to either [General Douglas] MacArthur or the soldiers whom he placed in harm's way in the summer of 1950 ... This study seeks to redress the imbalance that exists between fact and interpretation. For too long historians and soldiers have roundly criticized Task Force Smith's performance, extrapolated from its fate a set of assumptions about what constitutes readiness, and then used those assumptions to condemn the entire Eighth Army. The reality is much more complex. A proper examination of the historical record reveals wide disparities in the readiness and combat effectiveness of the subordinate units of America's first forward-deployed Cold War field force ... This work will demonstrate how units achieved that readiness by means of case studies of four infantry regiments, one from each of the four infantry divisions that constituted the Eighth Army in 1950. It synthesizes contemporary training doctrine, training records generated by maneuver units, unit histories, reports of inspections by outside agencies, contemporary self-assessments, and the observations of veterans who served in Japan in the fifteen months before the outbreak of the Korean War. It challenges the long-standing reputation of the Eighth Army as flabby, dispirited, and weak"--Introduction.

Book Three Mile Island a Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective

Download or read book Three Mile Island a Nuclear Crisis in Historical Perspective written by J. Samuel Walker and published by Nuclear Regulatory Commission. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents a bit of history about nuclear power that began in 1954 when the U.S. Congress signed the Atomic Energy Act, a law that made the development of nuclear power possible by allowing basic information about atomic energy for civilian applications to be available in hopes it would building an industry that could provide a new source of electrical power. The author explores the initial political, business, construction, reactor safety, and environmental elements with the debates to build nuclear plants within the United States as a source of energy then leads into regulation of nuclear power. This scholarly text, coupled with some black and white illustrations, provides some insights to other nuclear plants that were build within the United States and some reactor faults prior to Three Mile Island's accident. Majority of this book centers around Three Mile Island's accident, evacuation of employees, causes, political crisis aftermath at State and Federal levels, NRC (US Nuclear Regulatory Commission) and business community response, and the growing public concerns are covered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 28, 1979, the worst accident in the history of commercial nuclear power in the United States occurred at Three Mile Island. For five days, the citizens of central Pennsylvania and the entire world, amid growing alarm, followed the efforts of authorities to prevent the crippled plant from spewing dangerous quantities of radiation into the environment. This book is the first comprehensive, moment-by-moment account of the causes, context, and consequences of the Three Mile Island crisis. Walker captures the high human drama surrounding the accident, sets it in the context of the heated debate over nuclear power in the seventies, and analyzes the social, technical, and political issues it raised. He also looks at the aftermath of the accident on the surrounding area, including studies of its long-term health effects on the population.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983, the 14 chapters in this volume are based upon presentations made to a conference held at the University of Western Ontario in June, 1981. The primary purpose of that conference was to mark the 10th anniversary of the publication of Allan Paivio’s text, Imagery and Verbal Processes, and to acknowledge the continuing contribution that Paivio was making to imagery research and theory at the time. His landmark book had been the major publication in the field of imagery, and during the decade prior to this volume Paivio’s theorizing and research dominated the investigation of imaginal processes. It was felt the most appropriate way to honor his achievements and activities, was to hold a conference on current developments in imagery research and theory at the time.

Book Addressing Techniques of Liquid Crystal Displays

Download or read book Addressing Techniques of Liquid Crystal Displays written by Temkar N. Ruckmongathan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique reference source that can be used from the beginning to end of a design project to aid choosing an appropriate LCD addressing technique for a given application This book will be aimed at design engineers who are likely to embed LCD drivers and controllers in many systems including systems on chip. Such designers face the challenge of making the right choice of an addressing technique that will serve them with best performance at minimal cost and complexity. Readers will be able to learn about various methods available for driving matrix LCDs and the comparisons at the end of each chapter will aid readers to make an informed design choice. The book will address the various driving techniques related to LCDs. Due to the non-linear response of the liquid crystal to external voltages, different driving methods such as passive and active matrix driving can be utilized. The associated theoretical basis of these driving techniques is introduced, and this theoretical analysis is supplemented by information on the implementation of drivers and controllers to link the theory to practice. Written by an experienced research scientist with over 30 years in R&D in this field. Acts as an exhaustive review and comparison of techniques developed for passive-matrix addressing of twisted nematic and super-twisted nematic (STN) LCDs. Discusses the trend towards "High Definition" displays and that a hybrid approach to drive matrix LCDs (combination of active and passive matrix addressing) will be the future of LCD addressing. Contains the author’s recent work on Bit-Slice Addressing that is useful for fast responding LCDs, as well as a chapter on driving ferroelectric LCDs Provides an objective comparison that will enable designers to make an informed choice of an addressing technique for a specific application. Includes examples of the practical applications of addressing techniques. Organised in a way that each chapter can be read independently; with the basic knowledge and historical background gained from the introductory chapters, adequate for understanding the techniques that are presented in the remaining chapters making it a self-contained reference.
