Book excerpt: "Childhood AD/HD assessments rely almost exclusively on maternal report of children's behavior, thereby leaving open the possibility that fathers might report AD/HD behaviors differently. Despite this possibility, true comparisons of mothers' and fathers' reports are difficult to ascertain given that commonly used assessment procedures were developed primarily from mothers' reports and the parent, child, and family variables that may contribute to differences in reporting are often not taken into account. In response to these concerns, the current study explored mothers' and fathers' ratings of children displaying AD/HD behaviors. In the first phase of the study, two videos, one of a boy and one of a girl displaying comparable AD/HD and normative behavior, were developed and standardized. In the second phase, 50 mother-father dyads of children with behavioral problems rated the videos. Primary analyses did not support the first hypothesis that mothers would rate AD/HD behaviors at higher levels than fathers. Although no significant differences emerged, trends revealed that fathers rated the boy and girl more severely than mothers. Mothers and fathers also rated the girl's AD/HD symptoms more severely than the boy's symptoms. Additionally, parent and family variables, including parents' knowledge of AD/HD, marital dissatisfaction, perceptions of their own child's AD/HD behavior, and the recreational contexts in which parents interact with their children were associated with parents' perceptions of an unfamiliar child's AD/HD behavior. Book excerpt: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurobehavioral disorder and also among the most prevalent chronic health conditions affecting school-age children (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2000). Studies indicate that although ADHD has a significant negative impact on both genders, it can manifest somewhat differently with boys and girls. It is not yet known how early in life these gender differences first appear. The purpose of the current study was to comprehensively examine gender differences in home and school functioning in a sample of preschool-age children with ADHD. The participants included 107 boys and 29 girls who ranged between 3 and 5 years of age and met DSM-IV-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) criteria for one of the three subtypes of ADHD. The results indicate that preschool-age boys and girls with ADHD are very similar in most of the areas of functioning. In the area of behavioral functioning, when the relative standing of the boys and girls with ADHD to other children of same gender was examined, it was found that girls had significantly more difficulty with the primary symptoms of ADHD than boys with ADHD. Possible reasons for the findings, implications for practice, and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Previous research has suggested there may be racial differences in how adults perceive and rate children's ADHD behavior (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity). The current study examined these differences between African-American/Black (AA/B) parents and European-American/White (EA/W) parents and teachers. Participants watched video clips of children in classrooms and rated their ADHD behaviors and their likelihood of having ADHD. Results showed that EA/W parents and teachers rated African-American boys' ADHD behaviors and their likelihood of having ADHD higher than AA/B parents. Mechanisms by which these differences exist were explored, including beliefs about stigma related to ADHD, values in movement and expressiveness, experiences with racism, and racial attitudes. Results suggested that EA/W teachers' racial attitudes toward African Americans were related to their ratings of African-American boys' ADHD behaviors and likelihood of having ADHD. More research is necessary to further explain the mechanisms by which such discrepancies in ratings of African-American boys' ADHD behaviors exist between African-American and European-American adults to inform culturally sensitive assessment and diagnosis of ADHD in African-American children.
