Recent studies have challenged the findings of more than three decades of research that found attending college leads to a decline in students' religious beliefs and practices. This study extends those recent findings by exploring the factors that lead to increased religious engagement. Multiple linear regression was employed to measure predictor effects on three measures of religious engagement in the spring semester, as well as to determine antecedents of religious involvement and strength of religious faith in the fall semester. This study found that religious engagement in high school positively influenced fall religious engagement, which in turn positively influenced spring religious engagement. A proposed theory of religious engagement, rooted in Astin's Theory of Involvement, is advanced. Additional findings, as well as implications for policy and practice are discussed. Cultivating the Spirit aims to raise the awareness of academic administrators, faculty, and the public at large to the vital role that spirituality plays in student learning and development. Throughout the book, the authors identify strategies for enhancing students' development and encourage the academy to give greater priority to the spiritual aspects of students' educational and personal development.

Book excerpt: A student's first year of college study is marked by the transition of leaving a familiar routine of academic, social, and family commitments. Upon arrival at college, a student can learn how to negotiate personal responsibility for intellectual and community development during the first year. New college students are primed for such immense intellectual, intrapersonal, and interpersonal development, and it may include consideration of religious practice and spiritual values, their meaning and relevance, and determination of religious habits and spiritual identity. This study explored the experiences of spiritual conversion among first-year college students, and how the college environment may contribute to such experiences. Religious and spiritual conversion experiences may reflect a creation, diminishment, strengthening, or transformation of a student's spiritual identity, and this exploratory study sought to include any of these forms of conversion and the factors that challenge and encourage them. By studying the nature of these experiences in the postsecondary environment, educators may learn more about how the experience of college can affect students before, during, and beyond conversion experiences. Students were invited to share their stories to illustrate how their spiritual lives were created, diminished, strengthened, or transformed during their first college year. They shared insights into the related challenges and opportunities encountered through feelings of loneliness, community inclusion and exclusion, academic achievements in the midst of personal turmoil, and environmental influences that may have shaped their journeys. The findings of this inquiry suggested the need for additional opportunities for training for personnel in higher education and student affairs to be more attentive to and better able to support students who are searching spiritually and who may experience a spiritual conversion during the first year of college. These findings demonstrated educators' need to focus on ways in which the college environment can best support safe and healthy student journeys to, through, and beyond the campus. Educators must shape the college environment academically, socially, and spiritually to be a place of change that welcomes and challenges students for success

Leading spiritual development theories were built on the dominant population of continuing generation college students. This qualitative research explored the spirituality and spiritual development of twelve undergraduate first generation college students at two Christian, liberal arts institutions in the Midwest United States during one year of their college education. Throughout the year, participants answered questions and created spiritual ecomaps to illustrate the changing relationships and influences on their spirituality. This research also explored the participants' definitions of spirituality; their faith development according to Fowler's (1981) theory; their experiences of academic, social, and emotional success; and their feelings of spiritual similarity and spiritual belonging at home and at college. This research found that first generation college students are pioneers in their education and faith journeys. In both journeys, they are travelling into unknown territory without a guide from home. They are discovering something new, and becoming someone new, which people from home will never completely understand. They need guides to affirm them in their places of questioning, to assist them in discerning truth, to help them form relationships with their peers, to lead them in self-awareness and understanding, and to encourage them in their relationship with God. Attending to spirituality helps first generation college students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally at college. These “spiritually fluid” people celebrate complex religious bonds, and in the process they blur social categories, evoke prejudice, and complicate religious communities. When One Religion Isn’t Enough explores the lives of spiritually fluid people, revealing that while some chose multiple religious belonging, many more inherit it.
