Book Effect of High Bulk Temperatures on Boundary Lubrication of Steel Surfaces by Synthetic Fluids

Download or read book Effect of High Bulk Temperatures on Boundary Lubrication of Steel Surfaces by Synthetic Fluids written by S. F. Murray and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High operating temperatures of new and projected turbine engines require that synthetic fluids be used as lubricants, because these fluids have better thermal stability and viscosity-temperature characteristics than petroleum oils have. An experimental study was conducted to learn the effect of high lubricant bulk temperatures on the boundary lubricating effectiveness of various types of synthetic fluid.

Book Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication

Download or read book Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication written by Bernard J. Hamrock and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-03-15 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specifically focusing on fluid film, hydrodynamic, and elastohydrodynamic lubrication, this edition studies the most important principles of fluid film lubrication for the correct design of bearings, gears, and rolling operations, and for the prevention of friction and wear in engineering designs. It explains various theories, procedures, and equations for improved solutions to machining challenges. Providing more than 1120 display equations and an introductory section in each chapter, Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication, Second Edition facilitates the analysis of any machine element that uses fluid film lubrication and strengthens understanding of critical design concepts.

Book Thin Films in Tribology

Download or read book Thin Films in Tribology written by G. Dalmaz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-09-06 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tribological properties of relatively moving surfaces are greatly influenced by thin surface films which are of considerable importance in the design of machine components. From Victorian days when working lubricant films were calculated in tens of micrometres, to today when molecular dynamics simulations and even experiments are beginning to look at nanometre, single molecule thick films, the study of surfaces which is the tribologists' challenge has moved to finer and finer scales. The 66 papers in this volume provide reviews across the tribological field with thin films as their theme, giving a comprehensive and concise description on topics ranging from coatings and surface modification to bio-tribology. The articles provide the reader with an outline of their most effective application and potential uses in new technologies. The volume will be of interest not only to research workers and design engineers in the fields of new machine developments and lubrication, but also to engineers and students specialising in tribology.

Book Effect of Humidity and a Wettability Additive on Polyphenyl Ether Boundary Lubrication of Steel in Air and Nitrogen to 350 C

Download or read book Effect of Humidity and a Wettability Additive on Polyphenyl Ether Boundary Lubrication of Steel in Air and Nitrogen to 350 C written by William R. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pin-on-disk sliding friction apparatus was used to determine the effect of humidity and a wettability additive on boundary lubrication of steel in air and nitrogen with a polyphenyl ether. Poor wettability was observed for the ether in dry nitrogen from 150Oto 200' C (302' to 392' F) and high wear also occurred in this temperature range. The wettability additive improved the wetting and decreased wear of the ether in dry nitrogen. It increased wear in wet air and had little effect on wear in wet nitrogen and dry air. A relative humidity of 50 percent decreased wear in nitrogen and had little effect on wear in air.

Book Biolubricants

Download or read book Biolubricants written by Jan C.J. Bart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lubricants are essential in engineering, however more sustainable formulations are needed to avoid adverse effects on the ecosystem. Bio-based lubricant formulations present a promising solution. Biolubricants: Science and technology is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and timely review of this important subject.Initial chapters address the principles of lubrication, before systematically reviewing fossil and bio-based feedstock resources for biodegradable lubricants. Further chapters describe catalytic, (bio) chemical functionalisation processes for transformation of feedstocks into commercial products, product development, relevant legislation, life cycle assessment, major product groups and specific performance criteria in all major applications. Final chapters consider markets for biolubricants, issues to consider when selecting and using a lubricant, lubricant disposal and future trends. With its distinguished authors, Biolubricants: Science and technology is a comprehensive reference for an industrial audience of oil formulators and lubrication engineers, as well as researchers and academics with an interest in the subject. It provides an essential overview of scientific and technological developments enabling the cost-effective improvement of biolubricants, something that is crucial for the green future of the lubricant industry. - A comprehensive, interdisciplinary and timely review of bio-based lubricant formulations - Addresses the principles of lubrication - Reviews fossil and bio-based feedstock resources for biodegradable lubricants

Book Elasto Hydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book Elasto Hydrodynamic Lubrication written by D. Dowson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication deals with the mechanism of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, that is, the lubrication regime in operation over the small areas where machine components are in nominal point or line contact. The lubrication of rigid contacts is discussed, along with the effects of high pressure on the lubricant and bounding solids. The governing equations for the solution of elasto-hydrodynamic problems are presented. Comprised of 13 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication and representation of contacts by cylinders, followed by a discussion on equations relevant to lubrication, including the Reynolds equation. The reader is then introduced to lubrication of rigid cylinders; the importance of film thickness in highly loaded rigid contacts; the elasticity of solids in contact; and the theory of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. Subsequent chapters focus on apparatus and measurements of film thickness and film shape; friction and viscosity; and lubrication of gears and roller bearings. This book will be of interest to tribologists.
