Book Forms of Network Resource

Download or read book Forms of Network Resource written by Robert Huggins and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leveraging of inter-firm networks is increasingly considered to be a strategic resource that can potentially be shaped by managerial action. In recent years, scholars have turned to the concept of social capital to understand how the transfer of knowledge occurs within and across firms. However, this has resulted in an overstretching of the social capital concept. The aim of this paper is to refine and add specificity to the current broad application of the social capital concept. It is argued that although the social capital concept explains investments in networks based on a network logic relating to sociability and socialization, it does not explain investments in networks based on a logic relating to economic expectations. These expectations result in network participation that is more calculative than networks containing social capital. The paper introduces the notion of 'network capital' to explain the resources contained within inter-firm networks that do not necessarily equate with the type of trust and obligations associated with social capital. Network capital is defined as an investment in calculative relations through which firms gain access to knowledge to enhance expected economic returns. It is argued that while network capital can be strategically managed, particularly to influence knowledge flow, the nature of social capital is such that it is very difficult to manage. It is concluded that the network capital-social capital framework opens a number of avenues in terms of future research, especially in relation to the extended resource-based view of the firm and theories of open innovation.

Book Social Capital and Business Development in High Technology Clusters

Download or read book Social Capital and Business Development in High Technology Clusters written by Neslihan Aydogan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economics of regional clusters, where business formation, technological innovation, and the emergence of a highly-skilled labor force converge, has become a popular topic. This fascinating book applies a variety of tools and models to analyze, in depth, the formation and growth of high-tech clusters. It does this first by exploring the institutional forces that promote the failure or success of such agglomerations, and then by focusing on the dynamics of the labor force.

Book Social Capital Organizational Learning Capability and Technological Knowledge Transfer

Download or read book Social Capital Organizational Learning Capability and Technological Knowledge Transfer written by Shih-Chieh Fang and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study uses inter-organizational networks to focus on firm opportunities to establish the level of social capital required to efficiently utilize network resources among certain collaborative research projects. This study reached the following conclusions: (1) establishment of social capital does little to improve the technological knowledge transfer; and (2) organizational learning is the necessary condition for improving technological knowledge transfer performance. Only certain social capital factors combined with certain organizational learning capabilities can enhance performance. (Contains 2 tables.).

Book excerpt: This paper contributes to an integrated theory of knowledge sharing in multinunit firms by synthesizing the concept of network centrality from social capital theory and the notion of relatedness in skill-base from the strategic management literature. My main argument is that a high degree of network centrality among business units possessing related knowledge is needed for interunit knowledge sharing to occur and be effective. Results from a network study of 120 product development projects situated in 41 business units in a large multinunit electronics company showed that project teams obtained more software and hardware from other units and completed their projects faster to the extent that they initially had central network positions among business units possessing related knowledge. Neither network centrality nor extent of related knowledge alone explained the amount of knowledge obtained and project completion time. The results also showed that central positions attained with many direct interunit relations (as opposed to indirect relations through intermediaries) were not always beneficial. While direct relations were helpful when the teams incurred problems in transferring knowledge from another unit, they prolonged completion time when there were no transfer problems, in part because they required time to maintain and hence slowed down project work. I discuss implications for research on interunit knowledge sharing and social capital theory and also outline implications for managers of multiunit firms.

Book Innovation Networks

Download or read book Innovation Networks written by Knut Koschatzky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation networks are a major source for acquiring new information and knowledge and thus for supporting innovation processes. Despite the many theoretical and empirical contributions to the explanation of networks, many questions still remain open. For example: How can networks, if they do not emerge by their own, be initiated? How can fragmentation in innovation systems be overcome? And how can networking experience from market economies be transferred to the emerging economies of Central and Eastern Europe? By presenting a selection of papers which address innovation networking from theoretical and political viewpoints, the book aims at giving answers to these questions.

Book Inter Organizational Relationships and Perceived Innovation Performance

Download or read book Inter Organizational Relationships and Perceived Innovation Performance written by Aleema Shuja and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to analyze the role of inter-organizational relationship in boosting innovative performance of ICT enterprises through knowledge sharing supported by social capital. Gaining sustenance from Dynamic Capability View (DCV), the study investigates perceived enterprises' innovation performance as a result of inter-organizational relationships embedded with social ties and knowledge sharing among each other. Cross-sectional data were collected from managerial level employees working in ICT enterprises in Pakistan. The study findings based on Process Hayes Macro regression analysis using SPSS stated that the ICT businesses in knowledge hub are collaborating to build strong social relationships while sharing practical experiences and support each other through abstract resources for achieving higher levels of innovative outcomes. Inter-organizational relationships have an affirmative impact on innovation performance, invariably, knowledge sharing mediates the correlation between both. The influence of inter-organizational relationships on innovation performance through knowledge sharing is significant for firms with strong social capital. Consistently, social capital considerably moderates the relationships, as such organizations co-ordinate and work jointly with other organizations for driving service and product improvements. The research contributes by steers focus towards developing relationships among ICT enterprises, building ties based on faith and exchanging key information consistently to help and polish each other's innovation capabilities. Strong social ties among ICT enterprises will help acquire and capitalize on diverse knowledge to improve their innovation performance.

Book Governance Mechanisms for the Promotion of Social Capital for Knowledge Transfer in Multinational Corporations

Download or read book Governance Mechanisms for the Promotion of Social Capital for Knowledge Transfer in Multinational Corporations written by Paul Gooderham and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this paper is to extend social capital approaches to knowledge transfer by identifying governance mechanisms that managers can deploy to promote the development of social capital. In order to achieve this objective, insights from the micro-level, knowledge governance approach are combined with theory on the determinants of social capital. Three governance mechanisms are identified: market-based mechanisms, hierarchical mechanisms, and social mechanisms. The findings, based on data from two Danish MNCs, indicate that although the use of social governance mechanisms promotes positive assessment of social capital, hierarchical governance mechanisms constrain its development. The application of market-based governance mechanisms has no significant effect. In addition, the findings provide evidence that social capital has a positive impact on knowledge transfer.

Book Corporate Social Capital and Liability

Download or read book Corporate Social Capital and Liability written by Roger Th.A.J. Leenders and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In studies of inter-organizational relations (lOR's), there is a tendency to look at dyads of flrms, and to consider networks as aggregates of such dyads. But there are several roles for a third party; a go-between. This chapter looks at a go-between not in the sense of a middleman who intermediates in existing production or trade, such as an agent, wholesaler, retailer, and not in the sense of an entrepreneur who intermediates in the realization of new potential in connecting supply and demand. It looks at a go between in the sense of a relationship counsellor for the development and maintenance of social capital; providing support in setting up, adapting and ending cooperative relations between others. Or, in yet different terms: to help in the embedding of relati ons, in Granovetter's (1985) sense (Uzzi 1997a). Such roles may be performed by middlemen or entrepreneurs, but also by specialized agents who do not playa direct role in linking stages in a chain of production and distribution, as middlemen and entrepreneurs typically do. Indeed, some of the roles require an independence that is served by not having a direct stake in the relations that need to be developed. I propose that the analysis yields a perspective for looking at the roles of trade and industry associations in European business systems, and of banks and trading houses in Japanese enterprise groups (Kigyo Shudan).

Book Cooperation Clusters and Knowledge Transfer

Download or read book Cooperation Clusters and Knowledge Transfer written by Joao J M Ferreira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperation and clusters have become the guiding paradigms for explaining and promoting regional competitiveness, but the cooperation process between firms and universities and the transfer of knowledge in guiding and nurturing regional competitiveness has received relatively little attention. This book strives to fill this gap in highlighting the connection between inter-firm cooperation in regional clusters, innovation and regional networks, and the role of universities in them . It goes beyond the traditional economic approach of clusters and includes ‘soft factors’ in the explanation of regional competitiveness, and connects the literature on clusters to the literature of learning and knowledge creation as sources of regional competitiveness. It aims to foster an international and interdisciplinary exchange of perspectives by presenting current developments, case studies, best practices as well as new integrated theoretical approaches and applications.

Book In Good Company How Social Capital Makes Organizations Work

Download or read book In Good Company How Social Capital Makes Organizations Work written by Don Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2001-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge has always resided in organizations-but it wasn't until the Information Age put a premium on ideas that intellectual capital was recognized as a critical resource. Now, forces like technology, globalization, and the rise of free agency and virtual workplaces are bringing another form of "hidden" capital to the forefront. In Good Company is the first book to examine the role that social capital-a company's "stock" of human connections such as trust, personal networks, and a sense of community-plays in thriving organizations. Written by leading knowledge management experts Don Cohen and Laurence Prusak, this groundbreaking book argues that social capital is so integral to business life that without it, cooperative action-and consequently productive work-isn't possible. The authors help today's leaders understand the nature and value of social capital, suggest ways they can encourage and enhance it, and explore how they can protect this vital but increasingly vulnerable resource in a volatile, virtual world. Drawing on major social and economic theories, and the experiences of organizations including the World Bank, Aventis Pharma, Alcoa, Russell Reynolds, and UPS, In Good Company identifies the social elements that contribute to knowledge sharing, innovation, and high productivity. The authors convincingly show how almost every managerial decision-from hiring, firing, and promotion to implementing new technologies to designing office space-is an opportunity for social capital investment or loss. They also reveal the benefits that derive from investments in social capital, such as greater commitment and cooperation, increased talent retention, and more intelligent responses to customer needs. A landmark book on the critical role that relationships play in organizational success, In Good Company helps employees at all levels recognize the power of social capital to help people work better, and make organizations better places to work. Don Cohen is a writer, consultant, and the editor of Knowledge Directions . Laurence Prusak is Executive Director of the IBM Institute for Knowledge Management and co-author of Working Knowledge: How Organizations Manage What They Know .

Book Social Capital in Collaborative Projects

Download or read book Social Capital in Collaborative Projects written by Mamata Bhandar and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collaborative projects are increasingly common today due to the fact that many partners are leveraging technology to improve transactional efficiencies. Such projects required specialized knowledge of the partners to be integrated and therefore pose the challenges of inter organizational knowledge integration; integrating diverse knowledge bases across organizations (Bhandar et al 2006). Studies on knowledge integration and inter-organizational networks indicate that social capital, a resource based on social relationships, can influence knowledge integration and inter-organizational networks positively. Since partners in a collaborative project are likely to possess this resource due to their partnership, we adopt a knowledge integration view of collaborative projects to provide an understanding of the influence of social capital on these projects. Through a qualitative empirical study of a collaborative project involving three partner firms, this study shows how the different aspects of social capital can influence knowledge integration behavior of the partners for the project. The paper also indicates that presence of social capital alone does not ensure its influence; certain interventions help leverage the resource for its benefits. Implications to research and practice are discussed.
