Book Influence of Side groove Depth and Heat Treatment on Super high Energy Charpy Specimens of 9310 Steel

Download or read book Influence of Side groove Depth and Heat Treatment on Super high Energy Charpy Specimens of 9310 Steel written by Enrico Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NIST provides certified reference Charpy specimens to companies and laboratories around the world for the indirect verification of impact machines in accordance with ASTM E23. Specimens are available at three energy levels, low (?15 J at 40 ?C), high (?100 J at -40 ?C), and super-high (?200 J at room temperature). Specimens of this latter energy level have been out of stock from the late 2000s until the late 2010s, when specimens of AISI 9310 steel were found to be suitable for standardization, provided they were side-grooved in order to prevent the formation of shear lips. This study was aimed at establishing an optimal combination of heat treatment (specifically, final tempering temperature) and side-groove depth for Charpy specimens of 9310 steel, and was conducted by testing almost 900 specimens corresponding to six different combinations. As a result of this study, a recommendation for the heat treatment and side-groove depth of future super-high energy specimen lots was formulated.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, a study (presented in NIST IR8424) was conducted at NIST to identify the optimal combination of heat treatment (specifically, final tempering temperature) and side-groove depth for super-high energy reference Charpy specimens of 9310 steel. During FY23, a second phase of this investigation took place, wherein two additional values of the final tempering temperature were tested, while keeping the side-groove depth at the value previously established (0.9 mm/side, corresponding to 18 % of the original thickness). In consideration of the overall activities performed, final recommendations concerning the final tempering temperature and the side-groove depth are formulated for future NIST reference specimens of super-high energy level, manufactured from 9310 steel.

Book Charpy Impact Toughness of Martensitic Steels Irradiated in FFTF

Download or read book Charpy Impact Toughness of Martensitic Steels Irradiated in FFTF written by DJ. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charpy tests were made on plates of 9Cr-1MoVNb and 12Cr-1MoVW steels given four different normalizing-and-tempering treatments. Onethird-size Charpy specimens from each steel were irradiated to 7.4-8 x 1026 n/m2 (about 34-37 dpa) at 420°C in the Materials Open Test Assembly of the Fast Flux Test Facility. Specimens were also thermally aged to 20000 h at 400°C to determine the effect of aging during irradiation. Previous work on these steels irradiated to 4-5 dpa at 365°C in MOTA were reexamined in light of the new results. The tests indicated that prior austenite grain size, which was varied by different normalizing treatments, had an effect on impact behavior of the 9Cr-1MoVNb but not on the 12Cr-1MoVW. Tempering treatment had relatively little effect on the shift in DBTT for both steels. Conclusions are presented on how heat treatment can be used to optimize properties.

Book Assessing the Quality of As received 4340 Steel for the Production of NIST Charpy Reference Specimens

Download or read book Assessing the Quality of As received 4340 Steel for the Production of NIST Charpy Reference Specimens written by Enrico Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Charpy Machine Verification Program at NIST in Boulder uses heat-treated 4340 steel for the production of indirect verification Charpy specimens at low- and high-energy level. Recently, a batch of steel purchased for the program turned out to be unacceptably inhomogeneous, causing several NIST Contractors to produce specimen lots that did not fulfil our variability requirements, despite repeated attempts at modifying the heat-treatment process. The whole batch of steel had to be eventually scraped. In order to avoid such an occurrence in the future and develop an investigation procedure that can detect variability issues in the acceptance phase of newly purchased batches of 4340 steel, we have performed the following investigations and measurements on samples from good and bad heats: hardness measurements (Rockwell C and Vickers), instrumented Charpy tests, optical investigations, and texture analyses (including grain size measurements). Of all the parameters considered, we found that grain size can clearly differentiate between acceptable (30 m 40 m) and unacceptable (60 m 70 m) heats, and should therefore become the basis of future heat quality assessments. In support, hardness measurements can also be performed, while Charpy tests are not recommended in view of their relative experimental and economic burden.

Book Effect of Squareness Tolerance on Charpy V Notch Impact Energy

Download or read book Effect of Squareness Tolerance on Charpy V Notch Impact Energy written by FJ. Marsh and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for a tight squareness tolerance (90° ±10 min) of adjacent sides of Charpy V-notch impact specimens has been questioned by Quality Assurance personnel in the metals industry. An experiment has been designed to evaluate the effect of the squareness tolerance greater than required in ASTM E23-93a, Standard Test Methods for Notched Bar Impact Testing of Metallic Materials [1]. Material used to manufacture impact standards of low, high and super high energy levels was heat-treated, and the notched surface and surface opposite the notch were machined to 90° +20 min, 90° +40 min and 90° +60 min. The sides adjacent to the notch were held flat and parallel. A control set of samples was machined to meet current squareness requirements given in ASTM E 23. The results were statistically analyzed. The analysis shows when out-of-squareness is ? 20 min, energy ranges, mean energy values and associated standard deviations at the low and high energy levels are statistically different when compared to the same information derived from SRMs.

Book Charpy Impact Test Results on Five Materials and NIST Verification Specimens Using Instrumented 2 mm and 8 mm Strikers

Download or read book Charpy Impact Test Results on Five Materials and NIST Verification Specimens Using Instrumented 2 mm and 8 mm Strikers written by RK. Nanstad and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heavy-Section Steel Irradiation Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is involved in two cooperative projects, with international participants, both of which involve Charpy V-notch impact tests with instrumented strikers of 2-mm and 8-mm radii. Two heats of A 533 grade B class 1 pressure vessel steel and a low upper-shelf (LUS) submerged-arc (SA) weld were tested on the same Charpy machine, while one heat of a Russian Cr-Mo-V forging steel and a high upper-shelf (HUS) SA weld were tested on two different machines. The number of replicate tests at any one temperature ranged from 2 to 46 specimens. Prior to testing with each striker, verification specimens at the low, high, and super high energy levels from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) were tested. In the two series of verification tests, the tests with the 2-mm striker met the requirements at the low and high energy levels but not at the super high energy. For one plate, the 2-mm striker showed somewhat higher average absorbed energies than those for the 8-mm striker at all three test temperatures. For the second plate and the LUS weld, however, the 2-mm striker showed somewhat lower energies at both test temperatures. For the Russian forging steel and the HUS weld, tests were conducted over a range of temperatures with tests at one laboratory using the 8-mm striker and tests at a second laboratory using the 2-mm striker. Lateral expansion was also measured for all specimens and the results are compared with the absorbed energy results. The overall results showed generally good agreement (within one standard deviation) in energy measurements by the two strikers. Load-time traces from the instrumented strikers were also compared and used to estimate shear fracture percentage. Four different formulas from the European Structural Integrity Society draft standard for instrumented Charpy test are compared and a new formula is proposed for estimation of percent shear from the force-time trace.

Book Effects of Tempering Treatment on Tensile Hardness and Charpy Impact Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel LMFBR

Download or read book Effects of Tempering Treatment on Tensile Hardness and Charpy Impact Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel LMFBR written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of tempering temperature and time on the tensile properties and hardness of modified 9 Cr-1 Mo steel at room temperature and on its Charpy impact energy at room temperature and at 204/sup 0/C are studied. Effects of postweld heat treatment on room-temperature tensile properties were also investigated, and tensile data at elevated temperatures were obtained for selected tempering conditions. The room-temperature tensile properties (strength and ductility), hardness and Charpy impact energy were fitted to a Holloman-Jaffe (HJ) parameter with an optimized constant of 22.3. This parameter allows the trade-off of tempering temperature and time to obtain the desirable properties. The same parameter was also suitable for obtaining the effects of post-weld heat treatment on tensile properties. The effects of specimen size and full-size tubular specimens on tensile properties are presented. The yield and ultimate tensile strengths were plotted as functions of hardness. Optical and scanning electron micrographs showed similar microstructures in specimens subjected to tempering conditions producing the same value of the HJ parameter.
