Book Fatigue in Additive Manufactured Metals

Download or read book Fatigue in Additive Manufactured Metals written by Filippo Berto and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue in Additive Manufactured Metals provides a brief overview of the fundamental mechanics involved in metal fatigue and fracture, assesses the unique properties of additive manufactured metals, and provides an in-depth exploration of how and why fatigue occurs in additive manufactured metals. Additional sections cover solutions for preventing it, best-practice design methods, and more. The book recommends cutting-edge evidence-based approaches for designing longer lasting additive manufactured metals, discusses the latest trends in the field and the various aspects of low cycle fatigue, and looks at both post-treatment and manufacturing process-based solutions. By providing international standards and testing procedures of additive manufactured metal parts and discussing the environmental impacts of additive manufacturing of metals and outlining simulation and modeling scenarios, this book is an ideal resource for users in industry. - Discusses the underlying mechanisms controlling the fatigue behavior of additive manufactured metal components as well as how to improve the fatigue life of these components via both manufacturing processes and post-processing - Studies the variability of properties in additive manufactured metals, the effects of different process conditions on mechanical reliability, probabilistic versus deterministic aspects, and more - Outlines nondestructive failure analysis techniques and highlights the effects of unique microstructural characteristics on fatigue in additive manufactured metals

Book Influence of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Crack Propagation in Electroslag Welds

Download or read book Influence of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Crack Propagation in Electroslag Welds written by BM. Kapadia and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of fatigue crack propagation behavior in air of as-deposited electroslag welds in two hot-rolled structural steels, prepared according to ASTM Specification for Structural Steel (A 36) and ASTM Specification for High-Strength Low-Alloy Structural Steel with 50 000 psi Minimum Yield Point to 4 in. Thick (Grade A) (A 588), has shown that the crack-growth rates (da/dN) in the welds were similar to or up to five times slower than the rate in the base steels. The retardation in crack-growth rate was observed to be substantially greater for crack propagation in the coarse-grained heat-affected-zone (HAZ) and bond-line regions than in the weld metal, but this was not consistently observed. Moreover, marked variations in the microstructure of the weld metal and HAZ did not significantly influence crack propagation. These crack-growth data for the weldments, described in an earlier paper, have been analyzed in the present paper in terms of residual stresses causing the observed retardation in crack-growth rate. In the present work, quantitative comparisons of the crack-growth behavior of the welds were based on a cyclic-life parameter (N1), which was defined as the number of cycles required for precracking the IT wedge-opening-loading (WOL) specimens to a total crack length of 2.54 cm (1 in.). This parameter gave results that were consistent with those based on incremental crack-growth (da/dN) data in the earlier paper. The observed retardation in crack-growth rate in the welds is attributed to compressive residual stresses introduced by welding. This effect was analyzed in the present paper in terms of a stress-intensity-range suppression concept, whereby the applied stress-intensity-factor range is decreased to some lower effective value. The results showed that the beneficial effect of compressive residual stresses on crack propagation appears to be of a variable nature and would diminish following a stress-relief heat treatment.

Book Effect of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Crack Growth in Steel Weldments Under Constant and Variable Amplitude Loads

Download or read book Effect of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Crack Growth in Steel Weldments Under Constant and Variable Amplitude Loads written by G. Glinka and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research deals with the effect of welding residual stresses on fatigue crack growth in medium strength low alloy steel weldments. Three kinds of flat specimens have been used--unwelded specimens, specimens with butt perpendicular welds, and specimens with butt longitudinal welds. Residual stress distributions were others in both kinds of welded specimens. All specimens were tested under constant and variable amplitude load with stress ratios R > 0. Forman's equation and Wheeler's model of crack retardation were used for theoretical analysis of fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude load, respectively. The theoretical results were more realistic when effective stress ratio Reff and effective stress intensity range ?Keff, which compensated for residual stresses, were used. It was found that the tensile residual stresses increased the fatigue crack growth rate and compressive stresses reduced it. The lower the applied load, the higher the residual stress effect. This paper presents both experimental results and an analytical method of fatigue crack growth prediction in steel weldments on the basis of results obtained from parent material properties.

Book Effect of residual stresses on the fatigue crack propagation in welded joints

Download or read book Effect of residual stresses on the fatigue crack propagation in welded joints written by Nenad Gubeljak and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of residual stress on the fatigue crack growth was investigated for cyclic tension. Three-point bend specimens were used with through thickness notches at the center line of the welded joint. The experiments were performed for different load amplitudes and load ratios under conditions of small-scale yielding. The influence of the residual stresses on fatigue crack growth was estimated by experimentally observed fatigue crack growth rate and measurement of residual stresses at the surface of specimen. This paper describes an approach taken in two models to estimate the residual stress effect on fatigue crack propagation and to predict remaining service life of a welded structure.

Book The Influence of Salt Water on Fatigue Crack Growth in High Strength Structural Steels

Download or read book The Influence of Salt Water on Fatigue Crack Growth in High Strength Structural Steels written by TW. Crooker and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack growth is a potential failure mechanism that can be strongly influenced by a salt-water environment. This paper discusses fatigue-crack-propagation studies performed on three high-strength structural steels: 9Ni-4Co-0.25C, 12Ni 180-grade maraging, and 18Ni 200-grade maraging. Each steel underwent a program of fatigue cycling in two environments, a "dry" environment consisting of ambient room air and a "wet" environment consisting of 3.5 percent NaCl salt water. Relationships for fatigue-crack-growth rates as a function of the fracture mechanics stress-intensity factor (K) were obtained experimentally for each steel in both environments. The engineering significance of these relationships is presented in terms of stress levels and flaw sizes relevant to the steels under investigation. The results of this work indicate that, in an air environment, the fatigue-crack-growth rate correlates with the stress-intensity-factor range according to the power-law relationship, da/dN = C (?K)m. Fatigue-crack growth in each of the steels was accelerated by the salt-water environment. However, the environmental response varied significantly, depending upon the material and the ?K level. The lower-toughness steel was less affected by environment, and environmental effects in all the steels diminished with increasing ?K levels. No correlation was observed between fatigue-crack-growth behavior in the salt-water environment and the stress-corrosion-cracking parameter (K Iscc) obtained on the same materials.
