Book Effects of Monotonic and Cyclic Prestrain on Fracture Toughness

Download or read book Effects of Monotonic and Cyclic Prestrain on Fracture Toughness written by PK. Liaw and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of monotonic and cyclic prestrain on fracture toughness properties of 4340 steel, 4335 steel, and 316 stainless steel were investigated. Monotonic prestrain lowered the toughness levels of the JR-curves and J-T diagrams for these three steels, relative to the virgin material. While cyclic prestrain increased the JR and J-T toughness of 4340 and 4335 steels, it decreased that of 316 stainless steel. The effects of monotonic and cyclic prestrain on JR and J-T curves can be rationalized by material strength. Furthermore, the influence of cyclic prestrain was attributed to the cyclic softening or cyclic hardening characteristics of the virgin material. The transition behavior of the 4340 steel was also altered by monotonic and cyclic prestrain. Moreover, material strength appears to provide a rationale to account for the effects of prestrain history on the transition behavior.

Book Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra fine grained Steels

Download or read book Analysis of Fracture Toughness Mechanism in Ultra fine grained Steels written by Toshihiro Hanamura and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, advanced steel technologies mainly developed at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, for structure control, mechanical properties, and the related mechanisms are introduced and discussed. NIMS has long worked on developing advanced steel techniques, namely, producing advanced steels by using only simple alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon, and also by utilizing steel scrap. The hope is that this approach will lead to a technology of a so-called steel-to-steel recycling process, with the ultimate goal of a recycling process such as an automotive-steel-to-automotive-steel recycling process to take the place of the current cascade-type recycling system. The main idea is to utilize ultra-grain refining structures and hetero structures as well as martensite structures. In particular, the focus of this book is on tensile strength and toughness of advanced steels from both the fundamental and engineering points of view. Fundamentally, a unique approach to analysis is taken, based on fracture surface energy as effective grain size is employed to better understand the mechanism of property improvement. From the engineering point of view, in fracture toughness such factors as crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of advanced steels are evaluated in comparison with those of conventional steels.

Book The Relationship of Microstructure to Strength and Toughness in High strength Steel

Download or read book The Relationship of Microstructure to Strength and Toughness in High strength Steel written by John Henry Bucher and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report deals with the relationship of elements of microstructure to the fracture characteristics of a group of commercially produced steels, heat-treated to ultra-high strength levels. The microstructures were characterized in terms of optical microscopy, electron diffraction, and electron fractography. Fractographic studies were made of fractured surfaces broken in impact at +25 and -196 C as a function of tempering temperature, in slow bending at ambient temperature, in a modified bend test in which slow and fast propagation stages were effected, and on surfaces produced in tensile fractures. The fracture characteristics were studied by means of an instrumented bend test and in terms of the plastic instability generated in the torsion test. The instrumented bend test yielded data on criteria for the onset of slow crack propagation and for the onset of rapid propagation, including the effect of the total stored energy in the system. Plastic instability in torsion was studied as a function of specimen section size in AISI 4340 steel. A 250,000 psi yield strength Maraging steel was studied in a standard size test bar. (Author).

Book The Microstructure Hardness Impact Toughness Tensile Deformation and Final Fracture Behavior of Four Specialty High Strength Steels

Download or read book The Microstructure Hardness Impact Toughness Tensile Deformation and Final Fracture Behavior of Four Specialty High Strength Steels written by Manigandan Kannan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of steel dates back to the 17th century and has been instrumental in the betterment of every aspect of our lives ever since, from the pin that holds the paper together to the automobile that takes us to our destination steel touch everyone every day. Pathbreaking improvements in manufacturing techniques, access to advanced machinery and understanding of factors like heat treatment and corrosion resistance have aided in the advancement in the properties of steel in the last few years. This thesis report will attempt to elaborate upon the specific influence of composition, microstructure, and secondary processing techniques on both the static (uni-axial tensile) and dynamic (impact) properties of the four high strength steels AerMet®100, PremoMet(TM)290, 300M and Tenax(TM) 310. The steels were manufactured and marketed for commercial use by CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY, Inc (Reading, PA, USA). The specific heat treatment given to the candidate steels determines its microstructure and resultant mechanical properties spanning both static and dynamic. Test specimens of the steels were precision machined and conformed to standards specified and prescribed by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) for both tensile tests and Charpy V-Notch impact tests. Based on similarity of the secondary processing technique the candidate specialty steels were divided into two groups: (i) AerMet®100 and PremoMet(TM)290, (ii) 300M and Tenax(TM)310. The impact toughness response and resultant fracture behavior of the steels were studied at different temperatures ranging from -180°C to +170°C. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature and the final fracture behavior of the candidate steel was established at both the macroscopic and fine microscopic levels. The intrinsic microscopic mechanisms governing the impact toughness, quasi static deformation and final fracture behavior of each of the chosen high strength steels will be elaborated upon in light of the conjoint and mutually interactive influences of composition, intrinsic microstructural effects, and nature of loading.

Book Fracture Toughness Characteristics of the New Weldable Steels of 180 to 210 Ksi Yield Strengths

Download or read book Fracture Toughness Characteristics of the New Weldable Steels of 180 to 210 Ksi Yield Strengths written by Peter P. Puzak and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yield strength range for steels from 180 to 210 ksi is currently covered by four weldable alloys of the following nominal chemical analysis: 18%Ni-8%Co-3%Mo maraging steel, 12%Ni-5%Cr-3%Mo maraging steel, 9%Ni-4%Co-0.20%C quenched and tempered (Q and T) steel, and 10%Ni-8%Co-2%Cr-1%Mo-0.10%C Q and T steel. Broad ranges of fracture resistance have been reported for these materials based on various fracture tests, and this report presents information for material selection and design guidance by providing an analysis of the interactions between the metallurgical and mechanical parameters that contribute to the fracture resistance of plate products. Definitions of the interaction between the metallurgical and the mechanical aspects are developed with the use of the Dynamic Tear (DT) test and the Ratio Analysis Diagram (RAD). (Author).

Book Effect of Textures and Microstructures on the Occurrence of Delamination During and After Fracture Toughness Tests of API X80 Steel Plates

Download or read book Effect of Textures and Microstructures on the Occurrence of Delamination During and After Fracture Toughness Tests of API X80 Steel Plates written by Julian Arnaldo Avila and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The API 5 L X80 is a high strength microalloyed steel, widely used in the gas and oil industry to fabricate pipelines. This steel presents a combination of elevated strength and toughness. In the present investigation, the microstructural features, fracture toughness and delamination occurrence of two X80 grade steel plates with different processing routes and chemical composition were studied. The first steel depicted a homogenous bainitic matrix and the second steel exhibited a banded microstructure composed of elongated ferrite grains, with macrosegregation in the mid-plane of the plates. Fracture toughness tests were conducted for both steels on 7-mm and 15-mm thick samples. The orientation distribution functions analysis revealed crystallographic intensity distribution of the austenite to ferrite transformation texture, especially the alpha-fiber ( 011 '' rolling direction) which explained the anisotropy and delamination occurrences. Both processed plates of steel presented the alpha-fiber due to hot-rolling of plates. Delaminations occurrences were further investigated and attributed to a strong {100} 011 orientation presence despite microstructure homogeneity. A schematic model was proposed, showing the source of delamination and the reason for the lowest toughness for 45° to the rolling direction.
