Book Influence of Periodic Axisymmetric Imperfections of Various Wavelengths on the Buckling Load of a Cylindrical Shell in Axial Compression

Download or read book Influence of Periodic Axisymmetric Imperfections of Various Wavelengths on the Buckling Load of a Cylindrical Shell in Axial Compression written by Stanford University. Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koiter's well-known buckling analysis of cylindrical shells with periodic axisymmetric imperfections yields a solution which is valid for imperfection of different wavelengths and amplitudes. Numerical calculations were carried out to evaluate several of these cases. Of particular interest are imperfections of the wavelength which are larger than the one considered in Koiter's original analysis. In such cases, the validity of the solution may be extended to imperfection amplitudes of a much larger order of magnitude hitherto considered. The numerical results are plotted and tabulated. A rederivation of Koiter's analysis is added in an appendix together with a brief description of the computational method that was used. (Author).

Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book The Effect of Axisymmetric Initial Imperfections on the Vibrations of Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression

Download or read book The Effect of Axisymmetric Initial Imperfections on the Vibrations of Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression written by Aviv Rosen and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrations of a cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric initial imperfection and axial preload are studied. Small asymmetric harmonic vibrations are superposed on the basic static axisymmetric equilibrium and the frequency of these vibrations is evaluated. The analysis is based on the nonlinear equations of shallow shell theory, and follows closely an earlier stability investigation by Koiter. The study is restricted to initial imperfections similar to an axisymmetric buckling mode of a perfect cylindrical shell and represents a first approximation only. Such imperfections exhibit a strong influence on the frequency of the vibrations. The possible implications of this effect are discussed. (Author).

Book Influence of Asymmetric Imperfections on the Vibrations of Axially Compressed Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Influence of Asymmetric Imperfections on the Vibrations of Axially Compressed Cylindrical Shells written by Aviv Rosen and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of two types of asymmetric initial geometrical imperfections on the vibrations and buckling of axially loaded isotropic cylindrical shells is studied. The analysis is based on a solution of the Karman-Donnell nonlinear shell equations by the Galerkin method. The results indicate that the influence of the initial geometrical imperfections depends strongly on the mode of the initial imperfection and its relation to the mode of vibration. The imperfections may lower or raise the frequency. The buckling loads also depend strongly on the relation between the corresponding modes. In general, a reduction in buckling load is predicted, but in some cases the solution predicts an increase in buckling loads due to imperfections and in certain cases even large bending deformation without buckling.

Book Influence of Imperfections and Edge Restraint on the Buckling of Axially Compressed Cylinders

Download or read book Influence of Imperfections and Edge Restraint on the Buckling of Axially Compressed Cylinders written by Bo O. Almroth and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent investigations on the influence of edge conditions on the critical axial load of cylindrical shells are extended here to include cylinders with elastic edge restraint. It is shown that weak edge conditions are unlikely to affect the critical load significantly in experiments or in practice. Also the effects of symmetric initial imperfections were investigated. The critical load for cylinders with initial imperfections in the form of a cosine function was found to be somewhat lower than was indicated in a previous analysis by Koiter. The analysis also disclosed that very short cylinders would not be sensitive to the types of imperfections which were considered. A few tests were performed and their results tend to support this conclusion.

Book On the Influence of Initial Geometric Imperfections on the Buckling and Postbuckling Behavior of Fiber reinforced Cylinderical Shells Under Uniform Axial Compression

Download or read book On the Influence of Initial Geometric Imperfections on the Buckling and Postbuckling Behavior of Fiber reinforced Cylinderical Shells Under Uniform Axial Compression written by N. S. Khot and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of initial geometric imperfections on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite cylindrical shells subjected to uniform axial compression is studied in this report. The solution is obtained by employing von Karman-Donnell nonlinear strain-displacement relations and the principle of stationary potential energy. Numerical results are given for various fiber orientations in the three-layer shell consisting of either glass-epoxy or boron-epoxy composites, with different initial imperfections. Results indicate that the boron-epoxy composite shells are less imperfection sensitive than the glass-epoxy composite shells. Isotropic shells are found to be more imperfection sensitive than composite shells. It is noticed that the increase or decrease in the classical buckling load with change in fiber orientation is generally accompanied by a decrease or increase in imperfection sensitivity of the shell.
