Book Influence of Music on a Student s Engagement in a Physical Education Class

Download or read book Influence of Music on a Student s Engagement in a Physical Education Class written by Alexander Devito and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music can act as a positive influence to student’s mood during and after a physical education class (Barney & Pleban, 2018). The use of music in physical education as a positive influence on a student’s mood has been thoroughly researched however there is more research needed to evaluate how music may affect different mood states. The study investigated how music may influence six different mood states of students in a physical education class with music and without music. The mood states evaluated include anger, confusion, fatigue, depression, tension and vigor. Physical Educators could use music in their class to improve student’s mood by the end of class. The study was designed to measure the influence of music on a student’s mood aged 14 years old after a physical education class. A two by two independent sample ANOVA design was utilized by collecting data from eighth grade students across three classes to assess if moods improved based on scores between the pre/post- assessments during a class with music and a class without music. The Brunel Mood Scale was distributed before and after a class without music and before and after a class with music. Findings indicate that there was no significant interaction effect of music and time on any of the six dependent variables. There was a significant main effect of music for anger and vigor.

Book The Effects of Music on the Motivation in Relation to Fitness Testing In Elementary Students

Download or read book The Effects of Music on the Motivation in Relation to Fitness Testing In Elementary Students written by Uriel Moreno and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music has rhythmic and energetic characteristics that get people moving. Most gyms have a wide variety of classes that incorporate music into their sessions. The fact that music has the ability to impact emotions has been of recent interest in obesity studies; how music can provide a positive perception to exercising. Obesity is an issue worldwide. Current methods utilized to decrease obesity rates have not had a profound impact. During this study, music is being examined to find if it will have an impact on engagement in physical education classes in order to increase activity levels. This study examines the performance of students in one fifth grade physical education class and one sixth grade physical education class during anaerobic tests: a 40-yard sprint test (one with music and one without music) and a push up test (one with music and one without music). The results of the pretest and posttest are statistically significant for both tests. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected, indicating that music does indeed increase the student’s physical activity and performance levels during a push-ups test and a 40-yard sprint test. Practice implications indicate that physical education teachers should receive ongoing professional development in the use and role of music and physical activity levels in their classes. Policy implications should be that K 12 students need to engage in physical education on a daily basis. Future research should include longitudinal studies of the benefits of the benefits to students participating in positive physical activity classes.

Book The Effects of Music on Physical Activity Rates of Junior High Physical Education Students

Download or read book The Effects of Music on Physical Activity Rates of Junior High Physical Education Students written by Lindsey Kaye Benham and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is used and can be found in everyday life and throughout society. With many studies pointing towards music being a motivating stimulus for exercise, it is plausible that music would positively affect the physical activity rates of junior high school students in physical education classes. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of popular music on physical activity rates, via pedometry, and enjoyment levels of junior high physical education students. There were 305 junior high physical education students that participated in the study with 151 being male and 154 being female. This was a quasi-experimental study using a two conditions, with and without music, by two activities, basketball and volleyball, cross-over design. It is found that across all grades and gender, more steps were taken with music in both activities versus without music. No statistically significant differences are noted in time in activity between activities with music than without. When comparing the level of enjoyment of the activities with music versus without across genders and all grades, the level of enjoyment is higher with music than without, though the difference is not statistically significant. While statistically significant differences can be found and attributed to the very nature of the differences between volleyball and basketball, there are also several statistical significances found that can be described and attributed to the intervention of the use of music during that activity. Therefore, if teachers are looking for a way for their students to increase step counts and increase the level of enjoyment their students feel throughout an activity, adding music to the background of the activity will help teachers to achieve those goals.

Book What Effects Does Music Have on Student Performance Level While Participating in Aerobic Activities

Download or read book What Effects Does Music Have on Student Performance Level While Participating in Aerobic Activities written by Judd G. Helstrom and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research question addressed in this project was if certain types of music can increase motivation levels in students while participating in aerobic activities in physical education class. My goal was to find a way to motivate students in physical education class to work harder. I wanted to know if listening to music can increase their work rate and even their enjoyment of exercise. Most researchers agree music does influence motivation levels, but results are conflicting. I had my students participate in two aerobic activities that I designed while listening to either no music, fast music, or slow music. Results showed that the fast music did improve test scores for most individuals while slow music actually negatively affected scores for some, even beyond their scores while no music was being played.

This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book Meanings of Music Participation

Download or read book Meanings of Music Participation written by C. Victor Fung and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uncovers the multifaceted nature of music participation through a collection of studies in a wide variety of musical contexts across the United States. The contributors combine personal voices and vivid narratives with scholarship to present many potential meanings of music participation, and lay out research-based implications for lifelong music education. Exploring music participation in choral and instrumental ensembles; school music classes and community groups; in-person and virtual spaces; among children, young adults, and older adults; and for native-born citizens and immigrants, the 10 original studies in this volume present a diverse portrait of musical engagement. The chapters draw out themes including enjoyment, identity development, learner autonomy, social interaction, motivation, commitment, and quality of life, and draw connections between musical meanings and philosophical principles from both Western and Eastern traditions. Linked by interludes that connect the empirical studies with philosophical interpretations, this volume brings together multiple methodologies and perspectives to consider the social, cultural, and psychological meanings of lifelong music participation. It offers a valuable resource for scholars, professionals, and students working in school and community music or music education research, as well as readers interested in general education, social psychology, lifelong learning, and aging studies.

Book How Participation in School Music Ensembles Influences Student Sense of Belonging

Download or read book How Participation in School Music Ensembles Influences Student Sense of Belonging written by Megan Ratliff and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students have a basic psychological need for a sense of belonging in school in order to positively engage with their academic environment. Culturally proficient school leaders take responsibility for creating an environment which serves all students. A rich menu of school activities represents systems of developing sense of belonging for engagement by which students have greater chances of success and positive outcomes. The purpose of this research was to explore how music ensemble enrollment influences students' sense of belonging in school. The researcher conducted a qualitative case study on one high school band program in a predominantly white, higher-socioeconomic status, suburban school, collecting 175 in vivo codes from extant student writing samples. This study suggests a theoretical framework of a cycle of musical-social group cohesion through which sense of belonging was built through both social and musical means. The framework suggests that the social bond was facilitated through both social experiences and the prosocial effect of group synchronous music making itself. It is suggested that student sense of belonging may be built in a unique way through music ensemble experience in the school setting, and that school leaders should consider a vibrant music program not as peripheral, but as essential to the psychological development of their students. This study was limited to a single case, so further research is needed to compare the effects of various programs and confirm the presence of this effect in different school environments.

Book The Impact of Music Education on Select Students Self Efficacy

Download or read book The Impact of Music Education on Select Students Self Efficacy written by Amber L. Gustafson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music education may hold the key to improving the self-efficacy of students classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. Increasing self-efficacy for these students also potentially improves their chances of academic success. This study investigated the ways in which an El Sistema-inspired after-school orchestra program impacts socioeconomically disadvantaged students' self-efficacy as well as the correlations that exist between students' participation in the music program and their self-esteem, perseverance, motivation, and outlook on their personal future. Participants included fourth and fifth grade students enrolled in an orchestra program at a public elementary school in Southern California as well as their parents, teachers, and the school administration. The study was carried out through a mixed-methods approach, which consisted of student surveys, observations, and interviews with parents and school staff. Results revealed participation in the music program provided students with access to several sources of self-efficacy and produced strong correlations to measures of self-esteem and perseverance. Relationships between participation in the after-school orchestra and levels of motivation and outlook on personal future were also indicated but to a lesser degree. This study provides evidence music programs are valuable and can provide the right type of environment to reach children who are at-risk and give them the opportunities they need to succeed.

Book The Influence of Music and Performing Arts Education in K 12

Download or read book The Influence of Music and Performing Arts Education in K 12 written by Victoria Dolceamore and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students who are exposed to music and the performing arts can have improved listening skills, language skills, verbal memory, and speech, thus yielding a strong argument for it as a powerful educational discipline in the K-12 core curriculum. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the broader influence of music and performing arts education in New Jersey and understand how more time spent actively engaged in this discipline can potentially help students excel in school, meet the everyday challenges of student life, while also providing an outlet for self-expression, inclusion, self-efficacy, and bridge connections to other core academic areas of study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine teachers and two administrators of music and performing arts including kindergarten through twelfth grade. Data were collected by conducting multi-site, semi-structured individual interviews with music and performing arts teachers, artifact review, and the researcher's journal. The results of this study revealed that music and performing arts programs are a viable means to improve hard skills such as cognition, language skills, listening skills, and motor function, while also enhancing soft skills such as self-discipline, self-esteem, and creativity in school age students. Lastly, this study also shed light on the fact that teachers of music and performing arts find themselves constantly seeking ways to demonstrate that the fine arts have a broader impact and add value to the student educational experience.
