Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors focus on the description of the physical nature of cleavage fracture to offer scientists, engineers and students a comprehensive physical model which vividly describes the cleavage microcracking processes operating on the local (microscopic) scale ahead of a defect. The descriptions of the critical event and the criteria for cleavage fracture will instruct readers in how to control the cleavage processes and optimize microstructure to improve fracture toughness of metallic materials. - Physical (mechanical) processes of cleavage fracture operating on the local (microscopic) scale, with the focus on the crack nucleation and crack propagation across the particle/grain and grain/grain boundaries - Critical event, i.e., the stage of greatest difficulty in forming the microcrack, which controls the cleavage fracture - Criteria triggering the cleavage microcracking with incorporation of the actions of macroscopic loading environment into the physical model - Effects of microstructure on the cleavage fracture, including the effects of grain size, second phase particles and boundary - Comprehensive description of the brittle fracture emerging in TiAl alloys and TiNi memory alloys

Book An Investigation of the Role of Second Phase Particles in the Design of Ultra High Strength Steels of Improved Toughness

Download or read book An Investigation of the Role of Second Phase Particles in the Design of Ultra High Strength Steels of Improved Toughness written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of inclusion distributions and fine scale microstructure on the fracture toughness and fracture processes of ultra high strength steels have been investigated. The inclusion distributions vary in the sulfide type and the sulfide types considered were MnS, CrS, La2O2S and Ti2CS. The MnS and CrS particles are smaller and more closely spaced than particles of La2O2S. Resistance to void nucleation is the same if the sulfur is gettered as CrS, MnS or La2O2S. The particles of Ti2CS are smaller and much more resistant to void nucleation than the other sulfide types. The fine scale microstructures were those obtained for the as-quenched, tempered at 425 deg C and tempered at 510 deg C conditions for HY180 and AF1410 steels. The topics then addressed are (a) effect of fine scale microstructure and inclusion distributions on blunting behavior, (b) the role of inclusion spacing at constant inclusion volume fraction on fracture toughness of three fine scale microstructures for HY 180 steel, (c) effect of gettering sulfur as Ti2CS on the fracture toughness of three fine scale microstructures of HY180 steel, (d) morphology of Ti2CS particles, (e) effect of gettering sulfur as Ti2CS on the fracture toughness of AF1410 steel tempered at 510 deg C, and (f) conclusions regarding improving toughness by gettering sulfur as Ti2CS.

Book Correlation of Microstructure with Fracture Toughness Properties in Metals

Download or read book Correlation of Microstructure with Fracture Toughness Properties in Metals written by Richard E. Lewis and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ti-6Al-4V alloy, 1-in. plate was studied for the purpose of establishing a correlation between microstructures and fracture toughness, stress-corrosion cracking, and fatigue crack growth. Both standard and ELI grades, mill-annealed, vacuum-creep-furnace flattened and recrystallization-annealed were included. Reheat-treatments by duplex-annealing and beta- plus duplex-annealing were performed, including air and furnace cooling from the final annealing temperature. A total of 17 conditions were studied, complementing the 49 conditions previously studied on two contracts to Naval Air Systems Command. Tensile, fracture toughness, stress-corrosion cracking, and fatigue crack growth properties were determined. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microfractography were employed. Six conditions studied previously were reexamined by transmission electron microscopy to investigate the effect of cooling rate on the interface phase between alpha and beta phases and on development of short-range order in the alpha phase.

Book The Effect of Microstructure on the Fracture Toughness of Low alloy Steels

Download or read book The Effect of Microstructure on the Fracture Toughness of Low alloy Steels written by Syavash Ensha and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model has been used to relate the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels to their microstructure. The cleavage fracture toughness of low-alloy steels depends upon three metallurgical parameters: the microscopic cleavage strength, the yield strength, and the effective root radius. Variations in fracture toughness with microstructure can be explained through the effect of the microstructure on these parameters. The major objective of this investigation has been the study of the effect of microstructural variables on these parameters, and hence the effect of microstructure on fracture toughness. The theoretical model for the cleavage fracture toughness of the low-alloy steels can be successfully applied provided the assumptions are not strongly violated. This requires low microscopic cleavage strength/yield strength ratio values and low work-hardening rates. Lower temperatures and higher strain rates both favor these conditions. Book Strength and Toughness of Materials

Download or read book Strength and Toughness of Materials written by Toshiro Kobayashi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the shift from the Metal Age progresses, materials engineers and materials scientists seek new analytical and design methods to create stronger and more reliable materials. Based on extensive research and developmental work done at the author’s multi-disciplinary material laboratory, this graduate-level and professional reference addresses the relationship between fracture mechanisms (macroscale) and the microscopic, with the goal of explaining macroscopic fracture behavior based on a microscopic fracture mechanism. A careful fusion of mechanics and materials science, this text and monograph systematically considers an array of materials, from metals through ceramics and polymers, and demonstrates lab-tested strategies to develop desirable high-temperature materials for technological applications.

Book Influence of Microstructure and Microdamage Processes on Fracture at High Loading Rates

Download or read book Influence of Microstructure and Microdamage Processes on Fracture at High Loading Rates written by J. H. Giovanola and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimal use of advanced beta and near-beta titanium alloys in situations involving dynamic or shock loading requires an understanding of the influence of microstructure and loading rate on fracture behavior. To address this need, SRI is performing dynamic crack initiation and propagation experiments on Ti-1OV-2Fe-3Al in three microstructural conditions, varying the loading rate to establish the rate-dependence of the fracture toughness. A new experimental method developed in a previous Air Force Office of Scientific Research program (the one point bend impact test) and numerical simulations of the experiments are used to determine dynamic initiation and propagation toughness. Further, the fracture surface topography analysis (FRASTA) technique is applied to the fractured specimens to elucidate the microstructural failure mechanisms controlling fracture in each of the investigated microstructures. Keywords: Microstructure, Dynamic fracture, Initiation toughness, Propagation toughness, Titanium alloys, Iron alloys, Aluminum alloys.
