Book Fracture Toughness of Unalloyed Austempered Ductile Cast Iron ADI

Download or read book Fracture Toughness of Unalloyed Austempered Ductile Cast Iron ADI written by SK. Putatunda and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of microstructure on the tensile properties and the plane strain fracture toughness (KIc) of unalloyed austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) was examined in room temperature ambient atmosphere. The crack growth mechanism during fracture toughness tests was determined through detailed fractographic studies. Compact tension and round cylindrical specimens were prepared from unalloyed ADI and were given four different austempering heat treatments to produce four different microstructures. Tensile properties and fracture toughness of these four differently heat-treated materials as well as cast materials were determined as per relevant ASTM standards.

Book Processing Mechanical Properties and Ballistic Impact Effects of Austempered Ductile Iron

Download or read book Processing Mechanical Properties and Ballistic Impact Effects of Austempered Ductile Iron written by John Chinella and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes the resistance to penetration and the damage to austempered ductile iron (ADI) from ballistic impacL The resistance to penetration is determined with an average velocity with a 50% probability for complete penetration, the V-50 ballistic limit. The responses of the ADI material to impact are shown by observations of penetration modes, microstructural changes, and fracture topographies. Mechanical properties and ballistic limits are shown for two variations of the austemper process. ADI targets reveal a capability for multiple impacts without structural failures. Penetration modes include ductile hole growth, radial fracture, petaling, and scabbing. V-50 velocities of ADI with lower values of hardness and strength are equal or greater than the V-50 velocities of ADI with higher values of hardness and strength. Graphite spheroids of this ductile cast iron appear to affect plastic deformation and penetration modes by localizing stresses, microstructural changes, and fracture.

This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel, Two-Step Austenitizing heat treatment process for creation of Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) with an optimum combination of strength, ductility and fracture toughness was conceived in this investigation. This novel heat treatment process involves heating the ductile iron in the lower intercritical temperature range and then raising the temperature to the fully austenitic temperature range followed by austempering in the bainitic temperature range. This heat treatment was expected to result in a microstructure consisting of proeutectoid ferrite, very fine scale bainitic ferrite, and high-carbon austenite. Tensile and CT test specimens were created and tested to evaluate the effects of several Two-Step Austenitizing heat treatment processes. The effect of the heat treatment parameters on the dislocation density of ADI was also studied. A simple, first-principles approach was taken to model the phase transformation kinetics associated with the phase transformations in the ADI alloy. The mechanical properties of a multiphase crystalline material such as ADI are hypothesized to be dictated by complex and interrelated effects involving microstructural features (such as the ferrite lathe size, retained austenite volume fraction, and carbon content of retained austenite) that are, in turn, strongly influenced by austenitization and austempering times and temperatures. This research study determined that, compared to conventionally processed ADI., one variant of the Two-Step Austenitizing heat treatment process yielded an ADI alloy with superior fracture toughness without significantly compromising the strength and ductility. It was concluded that prior nucleated proeutectoid ferrite was an important factor in this improvement. An analytical model based upon the nucleation of proeutectoid ferrite and graphite nodules during intercritical austenitization was created to explain this physical outcome.

Book Effect of Austempering Variables on the Quasi Static and Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Austempered Ductile Iron

Download or read book Effect of Austempering Variables on the Quasi Static and Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Austempered Ductile Iron written by MN. Srinivasan and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical design of experiments was employed to study the effect of austenitizing temperature, austempering temperature, and austempering time on the quasi-static and dynamic fracture toughness of austempered ductile iron of a standard composition. Regression equations were developed to determine the relative significance of the variables in affecting the quasi-static and dynamic fracture toughness of the austempered iron studied.

Book Influence of Microstructure and Microdamage Processes on Fracture at High Loading Rates

Download or read book Influence of Microstructure and Microdamage Processes on Fracture at High Loading Rates written by J. H. Giovanola and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimal use of advanced beta and near-beta titanium alloys in situations involving dynamic or shock loading requires an understanding of the influence of microstructure and loading rate on fracture behavior. To address this need, SRI is performing dynamic crack initiation and propagation experiments on Ti-1OV-2Fe-3Al in three microstructural conditions, varying the loading rate to establish the rate-dependence of the fracture toughness. A new experimental method developed in a previous Air Force Office of Scientific Research program (the one point bend impact test) and numerical simulations of the experiments are used to determine dynamic initiation and propagation toughness. Further, the fracture surface topography analysis (FRASTA) technique is applied to the fractured specimens to elucidate the microstructural failure mechanisms controlling fracture in each of the investigated microstructures. Keywords: Microstructure, Dynamic fracture, Initiation toughness, Propagation toughness, Titanium alloys, Iron alloys, Aluminum alloys.
