Book Influence of Final Tempering Temperature on Side grooved Super high Energy Charpy Specimens of 9310 Steel second Phase

Download or read book Influence of Final Tempering Temperature on Side grooved Super high Energy Charpy Specimens of 9310 Steel second Phase written by Enrico Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, a study (presented in NIST IR8424) was conducted at NIST to identify the optimal combination of heat treatment (specifically, final tempering temperature) and side-groove depth for super-high energy reference Charpy specimens of 9310 steel. During FY23, a second phase of this investigation took place, wherein two additional values of the final tempering temperature were tested, while keeping the side-groove depth at the value previously established (0.9 mm/side, corresponding to 18 % of the original thickness). In consideration of the overall activities performed, final recommendations concerning the final tempering temperature and the side-groove depth are formulated for future NIST reference specimens of super-high energy level, manufactured from 9310 steel.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NIST provides certified reference Charpy specimens to companies and laboratories around the world for the indirect verification of impact machines in accordance with ASTM E23. Specimens are available at three energy levels, low (?15 J at 40 ?C), high (?100 J at -40 ?C), and super-high (?200 J at room temperature). Specimens of this latter energy level have been out of stock from the late 2000s until the late 2010s, when specimens of AISI 9310 steel were found to be suitable for standardization, provided they were side-grooved in order to prevent the formation of shear lips. This study was aimed at establishing an optimal combination of heat treatment (specifically, final tempering temperature) and side-groove depth for Charpy specimens of 9310 steel, and was conducted by testing almost 900 specimens corresponding to six different combinations. As a result of this study, a recommendation for the heat treatment and side-groove depth of future super-high energy specimen lots was formulated.

Book Test Temperature Range for NIST Certified Charpy Specimens for Testing at room Temperature

Download or read book Test Temperature Range for NIST Certified Charpy Specimens for Testing at room Temperature written by Enrico Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NIST Charpy Machine Verification Program is ready to introduce low-energy and high-energy certified specimens that can be tested at room temperature instead of -40 ℗ʻC, thus accommodating the requests of many customers during the past 35 years. An investigation aimed at providing a practical and technically sound definition of "room temperature" (barycentric value and tolerance) was conducted, by examining previously obtained Charpy energy transition curves for different energy levels, as well as by testing certified low-energy and high-energy specimens at 21 ℗ʻC (ambient temperature of the NIST Charpy Lab in Boulder, Colorado) and additional temperatures in the range 21 ℗ʻC ℗ł 5 ℗ʻC. Results have shown that for low-energy specimens, even within a relatively small 10 ℗ʻC range, the influence of test temperature on Charpy absorbed energy can be significant enough to cause "good" machines to fail the requirements of the ASTM E23 standard. Therefore, at this energy level, the allowable test temperature range must be restricted to 21 ℗ʻC ℗ł 1 ℗ʻC. For the other two energy levels (high and super-high), the influence of test temperature is small enough that the allowable temperature range can be expanded to 21 ℗ʻC ℗ł 3 ℗ʻC.

Book Effects of Tempering Treatment on Tensile Hardness and Charpy Impact Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel LMFBR

Download or read book Effects of Tempering Treatment on Tensile Hardness and Charpy Impact Properties of Modified 9 Cr 1 Mo Steel LMFBR written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of tempering temperature and time on the tensile properties and hardness of modified 9 Cr-1 Mo steel at room temperature and on its Charpy impact energy at room temperature and at 204/sup 0/C are studied. Effects of postweld heat treatment on room-temperature tensile properties were also investigated, and tensile data at elevated temperatures were obtained for selected tempering conditions. The room-temperature tensile properties (strength and ductility), hardness and Charpy impact energy were fitted to a Holloman-Jaffe (HJ) parameter with an optimized constant of 22.3. This parameter allows the trade-off of tempering temperature and time to obtain the desirable properties. The same parameter was also suitable for obtaining the effects of post-weld heat treatment on tensile properties. The effects of specimen size and full-size tubular specimens on tensile properties are presented. The yield and ultimate tensile strengths were plotted as functions of hardness. Optical and scanning electron micrographs showed similar microstructures in specimens subjected to tempering conditions producing the same value of the HJ parameter.

Book Gear Materials Properties and Manufacture

Download or read book Gear Materials Properties and Manufacture written by Joseph R. Davis and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2005 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the critical technical aspects of gear materials technology are addressed in this new reference work. Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture is intended for gear metallurgists and materials specialists, manufacturing engineers, lubrication technologists, and analysts concerned with gear failures who seek a better understanding of gear performance and gear life. This volume complements other gear texts that emphasize the design, geometry, and theory of gears. The coverage begins with an overview of the various types of gears used, important gear terminology, applied stresses and strength requirements associated with gears, and lubrication and wear. This is followed by in-depth treatment of metallic (ferrous and nonferrous alloys) and plastic gear materials. Emphasis is on the properties of carburized steels, the material of choice for high-performance power transmission gearing.
