Book Dante and English Poetry

Download or read book Dante and English Poetry written by Steve Ellis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of the influence of Dante on English poetry. The focus us not primarily upon stylistic influences or attempts to imitate Dante's manner of writing, but rather on the different guises in which the enormous presence of Dante has made itself felt, and how that presence has affected some of the central concerns of the poets in question. The poets considered are Shelley, Byron, Browning, Rossetti, Yeats, Pound and Eliot. In addition to analysing the way Dante is approached by these poets in their major poetry, Dr Ellis also discusses relevant critical works: Shelley's Defence of Poetry, Pound's The Spirit of Romance and Yeats' A Vision. The critical survey is unified by the attempt to show certain recurrent preoccupations in the work of these writers, such as the need to define a tradition in which Dante is a necessary forerunner. Ellis also shows that Dante has been read in a very partial way by these poets and the images of him which emerge in their works are inevitably varied and contradictory.

Book The Influence of Dante on Medieval English Dream Visions

Download or read book The Influence of Dante on Medieval English Dream Visions written by Roberta L. Payne and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with a discussion of the influence of the Divina Commedia on Pearl, in terms of religious experiences and poetics. Like Pearl, The House of Fame borrows both these thematic levels from the Italian. The Parliament of Fowls illustrates even more sophisticated borrowing techniques. Here Chaucer relies for massive thematic borrowings on really only one specific topos - the inscription on the gate of hell in Dante's Inferno. It is likely Chaucer is borrowing Dante's dream of Beatrice and the God of Love from the opening of the Vita Nuova for use in both the structure and the visual images of Criseyde's Dream of the Eagle in Book Three of Troilus and Criseyde. A brief study of John Lydgate's Temple of Glass and James I's Kingis Quair completes the study.

Book The Divine Comedy Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with an Introduction by Henry Francis Cary

Download or read book The Divine Comedy Translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with an Introduction by Henry Francis Cary written by Dante Alighieri and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2015-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri was born in Florence, Italy in the middle of the 13th century and what is principally known of him comes from his own writings. One of the world's great literary masterpieces, the "Divine Comedy" is at its heart an allegorical tale regarding man's search for divinity. The work is divided into three sections, "Inferno," "Purgatorio," and "Paradiso," each containing thirty-three cantos. It is the narrative of a journey down through Hell, up the mountain of Purgatory, and through the revolving heavens into the presence of God. In this aspect it belongs to the two familiar medieval literary types of the Journey and the Vision, however Dante intended the work to be more than just simple allegory, layering the narrative with rich historical, moral, political, literal, and anagogical context. In order for the work to be more accessible to the common readers of his day, Dante wrote in the Italian language. This was an uncommon practice at the time for serious literary works, which would traditionally be written in Latin. One of the truly great compositions of all time, the "Divine Comedy" has inspired and influenced readers ever since its original creation. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper, is translated into English verse by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and includes an introduction by Henry Francis Cary.

Book excerpt: Ezra Pound belatedly conceded that T.S.Eliot "was the true Dantescan voice" of the modern world. With this assertion in mind, this study examines the relationship between the two poets. It attempts to show how Dante's total vision impinges on Eliot's craft and thought.

Download or read book Dante and Milton written by Christoph Lehner and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante Alighieri and John Milton, two composers of vernacular epic poems, undoubtedly hold prominent positions in the literary canons of Italy and England respectively. Both authors have been made into universally important icons deeply engrained in the world’s cultural memory; their importance, however, extends vastly beyond their mere literary and political influence. This anthology explores the synchronic and diachronic constructions of Dante and Milton as such culturally produced icons. The main focus of the contributions in this collection is the production of cultural memory regarding Dante and Milton. The juxtaposition and comparison of the two authors invites a broader perspective that goes beyond merely national contexts as it touches on the question of the emergence of a European Dante and a European Milton. At the same time, the comparison of both allows for an exploration of various processes, namely of appropriating, forgetting and side-lining parts of their histories and politics – processes which the works and legacies of both authors have been subjected to throughout their literary and cultural reception.
