The specific objectives were to assess how loan recoveries as a result of listing with credit reference bureau affects non-performing loans by deposit taking microfinance institutions in Kenya and to assess how write offs as a result of listing with credit reference bureau affect non-performing loans by deposit taking microfinance in Kenya. Furthermore to examine how loan quality as a result of listing with credit reference bureau affect non-performing loan in deposit taking microfinance in Kenya and what effect does listing with credit reference bureau has on non-performing loans levels in Deposit Taking Microfinance in Kenya. This research study adopted a descriptive survey approach on effect of listing with Credit Reference Bureau Service on non-performing loans of deposit taking microfinance institutions in Kenya. Further, this study targeted all registered deposit taking microfinance institutions by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK). Target population was 12 registered Deposit taking microfinance institutions that have listed with Credit Reference Bureaus in Kenya. This study used primary data that was collected by use of a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by use of Descriptive and inferential statistics to measure interrelationships between the variables. Tables were used to display the information to improve presentation of the analyzed results for ease of interpretation. Regression analysis was used to test the relationship between dependent and independent variable. In light of the research findings, the regression model could only explain 52% in variance of non-performing loans. The study results revealed that there was a statistically significant relationship between loan recoveries and non-performance of loans (p=0.000); there was a statistically significant relationship between write offs and non-performance of loans (p=0.000) and that there was a statistically significant relationship between quality loan portfolio and non-performance of loans (p=0.000). Hence, credit information sharing and level of nonperforming loans are indeed related meaning there is a direct relationship between the number of credit checks done by the CRBs and the level of NPLs.

Book Transforming Microfinance Institutions

Download or read book Transforming Microfinance Institutions written by Joanna Ledgerwood and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-08-30 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to a clear need by low-income people to gain access to the full range of financial services including savings, a growing number of microfinance NGOs are seeking guidelines to transform from credit-focused microfinance organizations to regulated deposit-taking financial intermediaries. In response to this trend, this book presents a practical 'how-to' manual for MFIs to develop the capacity to become licensed and regulated to mobilize deposits from the public. 'Transforming Microfinance Institutions' provides guidelines for regulators to license and regulate microfinance providers, and for transforming MFIs to meet the demands of two major new stakeholders regulators and shareholders. As such, it focuses on developing the capacity of NGO MFIs to mobilize and intermediate voluntary savings. Drawing from worldwide experience, it outlines how to manage the transformation process and address major strategic and operational issues inherent in transformation including competitive positioning, business planning, accessing capital and shareholders, and how to 'transform' the MFI's human resources, financial management, MIS, internal controls, and branch operations. Case studies then provide examples of developing a new regulatory tier for microfinance, and how a Ugandan NGO transformed to become a licensed financial intermediary. This book will be invaluable to regulators and microfinance NGOs contemplating institutional transformation and will be of tremendous use to donors and technical support agencies supporting MFIs in their transformation.

Book Housing Market Dynamics in Africa

Download or read book Housing Market Dynamics in Africa written by El-hadj M. Bah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book utilizes new data to thoroughly analyze the main factors currently shaping the African housing market. Some of these factors include the supply and demand for housing finance, land tenure security issues, construction cost conundrum, infrastructure provision, and low-cost housing alternatives. Through detailed analysis, the authors investigate the political economy surrounding the continent’s housing market and the constraints that behind-the-scenes policy makers need to address in their attempts to provide affordable housing for the majority in need. With Africa’s urban population growing rapidly, this study highlights how broad demographic shifts and rapid urbanization are placing enormous pressure on the limited infrastructure in many cities and stretching the economic and social fabric of municipalities to their breaking point. But beyond providing a snapshot of the present conditions of the African housing market, the book offers recommendations and actionable measures for policy makers and other stakeholders on how best to provide affordable housing and alleviate Africa’s housing deficit. This work will be of particular interest to practitioners, non-governmental organizations, private sector actors, students and researchers of economic policy, international development, and urban development.

Book John Knox and the British Reformations

Download or read book John Knox and the British Reformations written by Roger A. Mason and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1998. John Knox is one of the towering figures of the European reformation, his name synonymous with hard-line evangelical Protestantism, and his influence spreading far beyond his native Scotland. Yet no scholarly biography of Knox has appeared for over 20 years, and no attempt has been made to re-evaluate his contribution to the reformation in the light of the massive advances in scholarship made in recent years. This volume, therefore, seeks to reassess Knox's career in the context of the European Reformation as a whole, but with particular reference to his impact in Scotland and England. The 13 contributors, all acknowledged authorities in the field, together provide a significant reappraisal of Knox and his role in the British Reformations.

Book Credit Risk Management in Ghanaian Commercial Banks

Download or read book Credit Risk Management in Ghanaian Commercial Banks written by Michael Nyarko-Baasi and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: B, Methodist University College Ghana, language: English, abstract: This study focused on the challenges of Credit Risk Management in Ghanaian Commercial Banks with the searchlight on the operations of Barclays Bank Ghana (BBG), Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB), Zenith Bank Ghana and Merchant Bank Ghana (MBG), all operating in the Accra Business District. The study essentially had the objective of examining the loan application appraisal processes of these banks as well as ascertaining the adequacy of their loan monitoring mechanism. In conducting the study, the researcher adopted the questionnaire technique as the research instrument to solicit information from both customers and officials of the banks. Purposive sampling technique was employed in selecting officials from the banks whose duties centered on Credit Risk Management. Random sampling technique also helped the researcher in selecting the sample size for the customers of the banks. Findings made uncovered the fact that poor sales and exchange rate losses, product substitutes due to trade liberalization and inability to enter into the foreign market and account for a chuck of the loan default cases experienced by the banks. It is recommended, among others, that the Government’s information on Venture Capital Trust fund should be made more accessible to the SMEs sectors through official sponsored workshops whilst the capacity and logistics of the Eximguaranty Limited are strengthened to alleviate the credit requirement ‘headaches’ of SMEs. Conclusions drawn centered on the fact that some banks minimize risk factors in credit management by entering into some covenants with borrowers’ under which certain figures and ratios are periodically sent to the banks electronically. Most banks also dispatch their officials to monitor and evaluate the loan disbursement schedules agreed with the customer to minimize bad debt associated with SMEs.

This book was released on 2010-08-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: to establish impact, attributing observed changes in welfare to the intervention, while identifying key factors of success. Impact evaluations are aimed at providing feedback to help improve the design of programs and policies. They also provide greater accountability and a tool for dynamic learning, allowing policymakers to improve ongoing programs and ultimately better allocate funds across programs. Such a causal analysis is essential for understanding the relative role of alternative interventions in reducing poverty. The papers in this section again adopt a variety of techniques. The rst two impact evaluation studies employ propensity score matching to establish, ex-post, a valid control group to assess the impact on child schooling outcomes among b- e ciaries of various interventions in Kenya and Ethiopia. The third chapter c- ries out an ex-ante evaluation of alternative cash transfer programs on child school attendance in Uruguay. The nal paper further carries out in-depth macro-modeling and micro-regression analysis to simulate the impacts of the food crisis and various policy responses, including food subsidies and cash transfers, on various dimensions of child poverty in Mali. Though using different approaches, the studies are gen- ally in agreement concerning the positive impact of the cash transfer program on child schooling and labor market outcomes. The studies from Kenya and Uruguay both nd that the schooling interventions are progressive.

Gathering cases from nine countries and cities across sub-Saharan Africa, and from a range of sectors, this volume goes beyond the usual focus on household ‘coping strategies’ and individual agency, addressing the growing number of collective organizations through which informal workers make themselves visible and articulate their demands and interests. The emerging picture is that of a highly diverse landscape of organized actors, providing grounds for tension but also opportunities for alliance. The collection examines attempts at organizing across the formal-informal work spheres, and explores the novel trend of transnational organizing by informal workers. Part of the ground-breaking Africa Now series, Africa’s Informal Workers is a timely exploration of deep, ongoing economic, political and social transformations.
