Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Influence of Ben Jonson, on English Comedy 1598-1642 This study of Ben Jonson's influence on Elizabethan and Restoration comedy has been made at the suggestion of Professor Felix E. Schelling, and has been done in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. Much suggestion and direction have been gained from Ward's History of English Dramatic Literature, Schelling's Elizabethan Drama, and Woodbridge's Studies in Jonson's Comedy. The method pursued has consisted for the most part of a first-hand examination and comparison of the plays written by Jonson, bis contemporaries and later followers. The question of how far and in what way one man's work has been influenced by that of another is always open to dispute, and it is impossible to fix absolute limits. The ever-present danger is that of finding what one is looking for rather than what actually exists. Many quotations have been included, especially from minor writers, so as to put before the reader as far as possible the materials upon which judgment has been based. I desire to express my gratitude to Professor Felix E.Schelling of the University of Pennsylvania for his wise counsel and gracious encouragement during the preparation of this monograph, and for the many valuable suggestions he has given out of his broad and minute knowledge of the history and content of Elizabethan drama. Book excerpt: Benjamin Jonson (c. 11 June 1572 - c. 16 August 1637) was an English playwright and poet, whose artistry exerted a lasting impact upon English poetry and stage comedy. He popularised the comedy of humours. He is best known for the satirical plays Every Man in His Humour (1598), Volpone, or The Fox (c. 1606), The Alchemist (1610) and Bartholomew Fair (1614) and for his lyric and epigrammatic poetry. "He is generally regarded as the second most important English dramatist, after William Shakespeare, during the reign of James I." Jonson was a classically educated, well-read and cultured man of the English Renaissance with an appetite for controversy (personal and political, artistic and intellectual) whose cultural influence was of unparalleled breadth upon the playwrights and the poets of the Jacobean era (1603-1625) and of the Caroline era (1625-1642). Jonson was a towering literary figure, and his influence was enormous for he has been described as 'One of the most vigorous minds that ever added to the strength of English literature'. Before the English Civil War, the "Tribe of Ben" touted his importance, and during the Restoration Jonson's satirical comedies and his theory and practice of "humour characters" (which are often misunderstood; see William Congreve's letters for clarification) was extremely influential, providing the blueprint for many Restoration comedies. John Aubrey wrote of Jonson in "Brief Lives." By 1700 Jonson's status began to decline. In the Romantic era, Jonson suffered the fate of being unfairly compared and contrasted to Shakespeare, as the taste for Jonson's type of satirical comedy decreased. Jonson was at times greatly appreciated by the Romantics, but overall he was denigrated for not writing in a Shakespearean vein. (wikipedia.org)

This book was released on 2012-10-11 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Shakespeare's popularity has continued to grow, so has the attention paid to the work of his contemporaries. The contributors to this Companion introduce the distinctive drama of these playwrights, from the court comedies of John Lyly to the works of Richard Brome in the Caroline era. With chapters on a wide range of familiar and lesser-known dramatists, including Thomas Kyd, Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, John Webster, Thomas Middleton and John Ford, this book devotes particular attention to their personal and professional relationships, occupational rivalries and collaborations. Overturning the popular misconception that Shakespeare wrote in isolation, it offers a new perspective on the most impressive body of drama in the history of the English stage.
