Book Pre professional Allied Health Students Knowledge Attitudes Beliefs about Aging and Intentions to Work with Older Adults

Download or read book Pre professional Allied Health Students Knowledge Attitudes Beliefs about Aging and Intentions to Work with Older Adults written by Georgianna G. Sergakis and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The United States population of individuals over the age of 65 is projected to double by the year 2030, placing considerable strain on the healthcare system. This aging cohort will also contribute to a growing demand for Healthcare Professionals (HCP) trained and interested in working with this patient population. However, pre-professional students in the health professions have been shown to place low priority in working with older adults. The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-professional allied health students' attitudes, knowledge, beliefs and subjective norms about working with older adults and determine which variables contribute to predicting intention to work with the older adult patient population. Using Palmore's Facts on Aging Quiz: Part 1 (FAQ1) and Kogan's Old People Scale (KOPS), the survey also compared differences in knowledge level about aging and attitudes toward older adults based on intention to work with the older adult or not. Data collection for the study occurred during an introductory course at a large mid-western university, which included pre-professional students with plans to enroll in one of eleven allied health professional programs. Of the 205 students participating in the study, only 7 (3.4%) stated an intention to work with older adults after graduation despite all participants' close relationships and work experience with older adults. The pre-professional students' scores reflect a limited knowledge of aging and positive attitudes toward aging. Students intending to work with older adults were less influenced by subjective norms than those students not intending to work in geriatrics. The results of this study indicate a need for further research regarding variables influencing career intentions to work with aging patients. Recommendations include further qualitative study, education in professional programs and curriculum modification to include geriatric content in Allied Health Professional preparation.

Book Older Women Current and Future Challenges of Professionals with an Aging Population

Download or read book Older Women Current and Future Challenges of Professionals with an Aging Population written by Teresa Kilbane and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older Women: Current and Future Challenges of Professionals With An Aging Population is about older women and the unique challenges they face now and in coming decades. Elderly women face problems that require response from multiple service providers in the social welfare, health care and legal sectors. Due to the complexity of the various issues and the multi-systemic responses required to address these problems among diverse groups, an interdisciplinary perspective in a multicultural context needs to be examined. This book is an attempt to explain the multidisciplinary facets of social work with elderly women. Readers are also introduced to the ethical issues and challenges caused by economic disparities and are also provided with guidelines on potential responses and intervention strategies to such difficulties. Readers are also introduced to the concept of cultural competence in terms of working with aged women. The integration of theory, research and practice in this book makes it a valuable resource for academicians and working professionals who are or will be in frequent contact with older adults.

Book Effects of an Educational Intervention on Students Knowledge and Attitude Towards Working with Older Adults

Download or read book Effects of an Educational Intervention on Students Knowledge and Attitude Towards Working with Older Adults written by Johnna L. Kelley and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Many individuals report reservations about working with an older adult population. A potential factor that may influence this is openness to experience. Additionally, research shows that educational interventions are effective in increasing individuals’ level of knowledge on various topics including older adults and aging. This increased level of knowledge contributes to a higher level of willingness to work with an older adult population. In order to support and extend the existing literature on this topic, we examined the effect of a short-term education session on undergraduate students’ willingness to work with older adults in a variety of positions and settings. Analyses revealed that there were significant differences in reported willingness to work with older adults after the educations session. Specifically, participants reported a higher level of willingness to work with older adults when they were asked to imagine working in a field that was associated with working with an older adult population. This applied to their responses to working with both an active and a frail population. Participants also indicated lower levels of ageism after the education session. This study helped fill a gap in the existing literature as well as provided additional information regarding factors that promote individuals’ willingness to work with an older adult population.

Book Educational Interventions And Ageism Among Counseling Students

Download or read book Educational Interventions And Ageism Among Counseling Students written by D. Gent Dotson and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graduate counseling students need to acquire aging specific knowledge to make them more effective when working with the increasingly growing number of older individuals. Educational interventions of both long and short duration have been found to increase aging knowledge, reduce common misconceptions about older adults, while also helping to create more positive attitudes toward older adults. The primary purpose of this study was to test the effects of a very brief educational intervention on the overall aging knowledge of graduate counseling students. The secondary purpose of this study was to test the effects of an educational intervention on overall aging and mental health knowledge, negative aging bias and the ability to use factually based knowledge to process exploratory vignettes about situations faced by aging adults. The most exciting finding of this study was that it proved that a lot can be done in regards to conveying aging related knowledge to graduate counseling students in a very short period of time. The fact that all measures were done three weeks after the educational intervention also showed that the information conveyed was able to be retained.

Book The Effects of an Educational Intervention on the Aging Knowledge of Graduate Counseling Students

Download or read book The Effects of an Educational Intervention on the Aging Knowledge of Graduate Counseling Students written by Damien Gent Dotson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to test the effects of an educational intervention on the aging knowledge of graduate counseling students. Overcoming misconceptions, such as positive and negative stereotypes about older adults, is essential for graduate counseling students to be effectively trained to work with the aging population. Educational interventions have been found to be the most consistently effective way of increasing aging knowledge and helping individuals overcome ageist beliefs rooted in faulty aging knowledge. For this study, it was hypothesized that a comprehensive educational intervention (approximately 2 hours in duration) would increase overall aging knowledge, increase aging and mental health knowledge, and lower levels of negative aging bias; moreover, this study hypothesized that adding a structured discussion (approximately 20 minutes in duration) after the educational intervention would further increase overall aging knowledge and overall aging and mental health knowledge and further reduce levels of negative aging bias. In addition, it was hypothesized that students who received the educational intervention or the educational intervention with structured discussion would be better able to process three exploratory aging related vignettes than the group of students who received no educational intervention. The findings of this study suggest that the use of an educational intervention alone may not be enough to increase overall aging knowledge, increase aging and mental health knowledge, and decrease negative aging bias among graduate counseling students. However, it does appear that adding a structured discussion to an educational intervention is an easy way to produce superior results. In addition, it does not appear that using a short-term educational intervention, with or without structured discussion, is enough to impart the level of aging knowledge to graduate counseling students for them to be able to do more complicated tasks, such as processing an aging related vignette using factual knowledge.
