Book excerpt: Stone matrix asphalt (SMA) is a gap-graded hot mix asphalt with a high percentage of coarse aggregate and a high asphalt content. SMA is the typical gap-graded mixture used in Virginia that is intended to maximize rutting resistance and durability with a stable stone-on-stone skeleton held together by a rich mixture of asphalt binder. The field performance of SMA in Virginia has been generally excellent. However, several SMA pavements have undergone premature failure, and factors related to both pavement structure and materials have been identified as causes for the poor performance. A detailed forensic study recommended a specification change for gradation of SMA-9.5 mixtures to provide improved stability. The Virginia Department of Transportation adopted a new aggregate gradation in 2012 for these mixtures. Aggregate morphological characteristics, including sphericity, flatness ratio, elongation ratio, angularity, and texture, have been recognized as major factors influencing the performance of aggregate and asphalt mixtures. The current study demonstrated via laboratory methods the stability of mixtures conforming to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s new grading specification and the effects of aggregate morphology and asphalt binder properties on stability. SMA mixtures designed and produced by different contractors using aggregates from different quarries in Virginia were included in the study. SMA mixtures and samples of the aggregates used in production were obtained for laboratory evaluation of the structural stability and aggregate characteristics of the mixtures. All mixtures met the criterion of VCAMIX

Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to determine the influence of aggregate grading on asphalt mixture performance in rutting on heavy duty highways. For this purpose, the Hveem stabilometer method and simple creep tests (unconfined) were utilized. In both methods, Watsonville granite aggregate and AR 4000 and AR 8000 asphalts were used to cast specimens by kneading compaction. Two types of aggregate gradations were used: (1) California standard 0.5 inch (13 mm) maximum size, medium gradation and (2) California standard 0.5 inch (13 mm) maximum size, coarse gradation. The rut depths were predicted for a total of 15 cases, consisting of 4 temperature conditions, 2 aggregate gradations and 2 asphalts. The conclusions drawn, from the results of both methods of measuring performance (stabilometer and creep tests), were that (i) the medium graded mixtures provided significantly better performance in rutting than the coarse graded mixtures, and (2) temperature has more influence on rutting than the aggregate grading.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of binder type, mastic, and aggregate type on the low-temperature cracking characteristics of asphalt mixtures. Six different performance grade (PG) binders were utilized for this study: PG64-28, PG64-28 with poly phosphoric acid, PG64-34 SBS, PG76-22 SBS, a terminal blend asphalt rubber, and PG64-28 with 2 % latex. Each binder was tested to determine its low-temperature cracking resistance using the asphalt binder cracking device (ABCD) and the Superpave tests. A Superpave 9.5 mm mixture was designed using each of the six binders for this study and two sources of aggregates (crushed stone and gravel). Each mixture was then tested for low-temperature cracking resistance using the asphalt concrete cracking device (ACCD). Mastics corresponding to each mixture were tested for low-temperature cracking resistance using the ABCD. Analysis of the results showed that the AASHTO critical cracking temperature had a strong correlation with the ABCD binder and mastics results, but did not correlate well with the mixture tests. Mastic testing generally did not correlate well with the mixture test results. ABCD and ACCD tests results indicated that they were sensitive to binder type, aging time, and aggregate types.
