Book Influence of a Cratering Device on Close in Populations of Lizards

Download or read book Influence of a Cratering Device on Close in Populations of Lizards written by Frederick B. Turner and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the Sedan tests on July 6, 1962, the density of adult lizards northeast of the prospective ground zero was estimated on the basis of repeated sampling of selected areas. Samples were taken by hand collecting and by means of buried cans, which served as traps for both lizards and various species of arthropods. Measurements of cumulative gross gamma dosages in the study areas were also made: at 2" and 36" above the ground, 2" below the ground, and in the tissues of lizards by means of small implanted glass micro-dosimeters. In shrubby areas northeast of ground zero, the pre-test density of Cnemidophorus tigris in June was estimated at 5-10 per acre, the density of Crotaphytus wislizeni at 1-2 per acre. No juveniles of either species were observed. Densities of Uta stansburiana and Phrynosoma platyrhinos could not be estimated from the data acquired.

Book excerpt: Prior to the Sedan test on July 6, 1962, the density of adult lizards northeast of the prospective ground zero was estimated on the basis of repeated sampling of selected areas. No juveniles of either species were observed. Densities of Uta stansburiana and Phrynosoma Platyrhinos could not be estimated from the data acquired. After the test, during August and again in November, no adult lizards were observed closer to ground zero than 5500 ft. However, adult lizards were only rarely observed in areas which experienced neither blast damage nor lethal levels of gamma radiation. Hence, except, within about 2000 ft of ground zero, the apparent low incidence of adult lizards after the test cannot be ascribed to the detonation. A period of inactivity of adults may be involved. The impact of the detonation, if any, on adult lizards may be more clearly manifested in the spring of 1963, when definite evidence of differential survival as a function of distance from ground, ground zero may be obtained.

Book Ejecta Studies

Download or read book Ejecta Studies written by W. A. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project included 146 ejecta measurement stations encircling ground zero at eight radial distances ranging from 373 to 1,707 meters. The twenty-four sampling lines were spaced at fifteen-degree intervals. Data presented were recovered from stations located at radial dis tances of 640, 853, 1,067, 1,280, and 1,707 meters. An attempt will be made to recover data at stations located closer to ground zero at a later time. Preliminary analysis of ejecta data indicates that a real density varies inversely as distance raised to the 3.64 power. Circumfer ential variation of areal density is about a factor of 30 at the 1,707 meter radial distance, a factor of 10 at the 1,280 meter radial dis tance, and a factor of 7 at the 853 meter radial distance. Book Naval Aerial Photographic Analysis

Download or read book Naval Aerial Photographic Analysis written by F.L. Vuillemot and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The procedures and results of extensive pre and postshot aerial photographic coverage by naval aircraft are described and evaluated. Objectives were to use high performance photo aircraft to document pre and postshot ground zero area conditions, to provide aerial photographs for immediate onsite use in operations and to determine the unique advantages, if any, of this type of photographic coverage. One preshot and three postshot photo missions were run over the ground zero area by flights of two supersonic F8U-1P (Crusader) jet aircraft of the Pacific Fleet. During each mission, black and white, infra-red and color films were exposed. Missions were initially limited to coverage of the immediate crater area but later expanded in area to include the extensive up-wind and cross-wind base surge deposition area.
