Book excerpt: L'étude porte sur l'influence du renforcement (effet de courbe R) sur la fatigue des matériaux céramiques, nous avons choisi deux types de matériaux présentant les deux principaux mécanismes de renforcement intervenant dans les céramiques monolithiques : - l'alumine qui peut être renforcée par pontage dont l'importance dépend de la taille de grains, - une zircone stabilisée à l'oxyde de cérium CeO2 (Ce-TZP), pour laquelle la transformation de phase quadratique - monoclinique peut induire un renforcement important, suivant la composition. Dans un premier temps, les nuances présentant une résistance à la propagation de fissure ont été identifiées en déterminant les courbes R en flexion. Cela a été réalisé en utilisant des éprouvettes entaillées. Pour étudier le comportement en fatigue de l'alumine, des essais de chargement statique et cyclique combinés à des mesures de complaisance ont été réalisés sur des éprouvettes de double torsion. Les résultats montrent clairement une diminution de la résistance à la propagation de fissure pour la nuance à gros grains. Cela a pour effet de diminuer le facteur d'intensité de contrainte effectif en fond de fissure et par suite d'accélérer la propagation. Par ailleurs, l'utilisation de la fonction de complaisance introduite dans notre étude a permis de quantifier l'efficacité du pontage lors de la fatigue cyclique L'étude montre qu'au niveau du seuil de propagation de fissure, le pontage de la nuance à gros grains (la plus renforcée) est presque entièrement dégradé. Cela veut dire que l'effet bénéfique du renforcement, acquis lors d'un chargement monotone, est perdu en fatigue cyclique. Pour la zircone Ce-TZP, l'étude a montré que le renforcement est d'autant plus important que le taux d'oxyde de cérium est faible ou la taille de grain est grossière. Ceci entraîne un décalage des diagrammes V-KI vers les fortes valeurs de facteur d'intensité de contrainte. induisant une grande tolérance vis via des défauts. La dégradation des nuances 12Ce-TZP et 16Ce-TZP sous chargement cyclique a été mise en évidence. Nous avons observé une augmentation des vitesses de propagation de fissure et une diminution de la valeur du seuil en fatigue cyclique comparées à celles mesurées en fatigue statique. Il est donc certain que les cycles de chargement et de déchargement affectent les mécanismes de renforcement en entraînant une chute de la résistance à la propagation de fissure des 12Ce-TZP et 16Ce-TZP.
