Book Inflation Tax

Download or read book Inflation Tax written by Pete Comley and published by Pete Comley. This book was released on 2013 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflation Tax is the first book to present in simple easy to read way why inflation is such a big problem in the UK (even at low levels). It is reducing the standard of living of most people and redistributing wealth from savers to debtors. The book shows that inflation is not a mere by-product of random economic forces. Instead it is a stealth tax primarily paid by savers and pensioners. Furthermore, it has been used by successive governments since 1945 as a tool to manage the UK's debts. The book examines likely future inflation scenarios in the UK and the best ways to save and invest in those environments. Contents: SECTION I - INFLATION 1. Inflation - why you should be worried 2. What is inflation? 3. Theories of inflation 4. Measuring inflation: RPI/CPI SECTION II - DEBT 5. Government debt and the UK's Financial Dunkirk 6. Labour's post war solution to the debt 7. US inflation reduces UK debts 8. Debt: 1970s onwards SECTION III - INFLATION TAX 9. The benefits of inflation tax 10. Who pays inflation tax? 11. Disguising inflation tax 12. Book The Liquidation of Government Debt

Download or read book The Liquidation of Government Debt written by Ms.Carmen Reinhart and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-01-21 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High public debt often produces the drama of default and restructuring. But debt is also reduced through financial repression, a tax on bondholders and savers via negative or belowmarket real interest rates. After WWII, capital controls and regulatory restrictions created a captive audience for government debt, limiting tax-base erosion. Financial repression is most successful in liquidating debt when accompanied by inflation. For the advanced economies, real interest rates were negative 1⁄2 of the time during 1945–1980. Average annual interest expense savings for a 12—country sample range from about 1 to 5 percent of GDP for the full 1945–1980 period. We suggest that, once again, financial repression may be part of the toolkit deployed to cope with the most recent surge in public debt in advanced economies.

Book White House Burning

Download or read book White House Burning written by Simon Johnson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the authors of the national bestseller 13 Bankers, a chilling account of America’s unprecedented debt crisis: how it came to pass, why it threatens to topple the nation as a superpower, and what needs to be done about it. With bracing clarity, White House Burning explains why the national debt matters to your everyday life. Simon Johnson and James Kwak describe how the government has been able to pay off its debt in the past, even after the massive deficits incurred as a result of World War II, and analyze why this is near-impossible today. They closely examine, among other factors, macroeconomic shifts of the 1970s, Reaganism and the rise of conservatism, and demographic changes that led to the growth of major—and extremely popular—social insurance programs. What is unquestionably clear is how recent financial turmoil exacerbated the debt crisis while creating a political climate in which it is even more difficult to solve.

Book Fiscal Implications of Interest Rate Normalization in the United States

Download or read book Fiscal Implications of Interest Rate Normalization in the United States written by Huixin Bi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the main channels through which interest rate normalization has fiscal implications in the United States. While unexpected inflation reduces the real value of government liabilities, a rising policy rate increases government financing needs because of higher interest payments and lower real bond prices. After an initial decline, the real government debt burden rises even with higher tax revenues in an expansion. Given the current net debt-to-GDP ratio at around 80 percent, interest rate normalization leads to a negligible increase in the sovereign default risk of the U.S. federal government, despite a much higher federal debt-to-GDP ratio than the post-war historical average.

Book Public Debt Management

Download or read book Public Debt Management written by Rudiger Dornbusch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-11-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Europe proceeds towards economic and monetary union, fiscal convergence and the prospect of a common money are at the centre of discussion. This volume from the Centre for Economic Policy Research brings together theoretical, applied and historical research on the management of public debt and its implications for financial stability. Gale fills a gap in the literature, using a consistent framework to investigate the welfare economics of public debt, while Calvo and Guidotti analyse the trade-off between indexation and maturity when it comes to minimizing debt service. Confidence crises have become relevant again in view of the high debt ratios in countries such as Belgium, Italy and Ireland. Alesina, Prati and Tabellini develop a formal model of the propagation of a debt run and use it to interpret Italian debt panics. Giavazzi and Pagano concentrate on how inappropriate debt management can precipitate a run on the currency while Makinen and Woodward review a broad sweep of historical experience.
