Book Inflation Expectations

Download or read book Inflation Expectations written by Peter J. N. Sinclair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflation is regarded by the many as a menace that damages business and can only make life worse for households. Keeping it low depends critically on ensuring that firms and workers expect it to be low. So expectations of inflation are a key influence on national economic welfare. This collection pulls together a galaxy of world experts (including Roy Batchelor, Richard Curtin and Staffan Linden) on inflation expectations to debate different aspects of the issues involved. The main focus of the volume is on likely inflation developments. A number of factors have led practitioners and academic observers of monetary policy to place increasing emphasis recently on inflation expectations. One is the spread of inflation targeting, invented in New Zealand over 15 years ago, but now encompassing many important economies including Brazil, Canada, Israel and Great Britain. Even more significantly, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan and the United States Federal Bank are the leading members of another group of monetary institutions all considering or implementing moves in the same direction. A second is the large reduction in actual inflation that has been observed in most countries over the past decade or so. These considerations underscore the critical – and largely underrecognized - importance of inflation expectations. They emphasize the importance of the issues, and the great need for a volume that offers a clear, systematic treatment of them. This book, under the steely editorship of Peter Sinclair, should prove very important for policy makers and monetary economists alike.

Book Financial Markets and Inflation Under Imperfect Information

Download or read book Financial Markets and Inflation Under Imperfect Information written by Mr.Jose De Gregorio and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-06-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the effect of inflation on the operation of financial markets, and shows how the ability of financial intermediaries to distinguish among heterogenous firms is reduced as inflation rises. This point is illustrated by presenting a simple model where inflation affects firms’ productivity. In particular, productivity differentials narrow as inflation increases. This effect creates incentives for risky and less productive firms to behave as high productivity firms. At high rates of inflation this may result in financial intermediaries being unable to differentiate among customers.

Book Inflation Stagflation Relative Prices and Imperfect Information

Download or read book Inflation Stagflation Relative Prices and Imperfect Information written by Alex Cukierman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-08-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the imperfect-information approach to inflation and its real effects. Two types of informational limitation are considered. One involves situations in which individuals have asymmetric information about the current general price level and consequently confuse relative and aggregate changes in prices. The other considers situations in which individuals cannot distinguish permanent from transitory changes as soon as they occur, creating a temporary but persistent confusion between such changes. The author presents the arguments within the context of the recent re-evaluations by economists of previously established views concerning inflation and its interaction with real phenomena.

Book Inflation Targeting in the United Kingdom

Download or read book Inflation Targeting in the United Kingdom written by Mr.Ramana Ramaswamy and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1996-05-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this paper is to identify a set of leading indicators of inflation for the United Kingdom, and discuss the conceptual issues pertaining to inflation targeting. The main conclusions are that narrow money has strong leading indicator properties for inflation, while broad money does not. Long yields appear to have some information for the GDP deflator, and headline inflation, and short yields for underlying inflation. Spreads between commercial paper and gilts, and the yield curve, have very little predictive information on inflation. An interesting conclusion is that while the nominal effective exchange rate is not a good predictor of inflation, the sterling-deutsche mark exchange rate appears to have weak predictive information on the targeted measure of inflation.

Download or read book The Infographic written by Murray Dick and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of infographics and data visualization as a cultural phenomenon, from eighteenth-century print culture to today's data journalism. Infographics and data visualization are ubiquitous in our everyday media diet, particularly in news—in print newspapers, on television news, and online. It has been argued that infographics are changing what it means to be literate in the twenty-first century—and even that they harmonize uniquely with human cognition. In this first serious exploration of the subject, Murray Dick traces the cultural evolution of the infographic, examining its use in news—and resistance to its use—from eighteenth-century print culture to today's data journalism. He identifies six historical phases of infographics in popular culture: the proto-infographic, the classical, the improving, the commercial, the ideological, and the professional. Dick describes the emergence of infographic forms within a wider history of journalism, culture, and communications, focusing his analysis on the UK. He considers their use in the partisan British journalism of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century print media; their later deployment as a vehicle for reform and improvement; their mass-market debut in the twentieth century as a means of explanation (and sometimes propaganda); and their use for both ideological and professional purposes in the post–World War II marketized newspaper culture. Finally, he proposes best practices for news infographics and defends infographics and data visualization against a range of criticism. Dick offers not only a history of how the public has experienced and understood the infographic, but also an account of what data visualization can tell us about the past.
