Download or read book Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction written by Filippo Crea and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades a number of studies have shown that abnormalities in the function and structure of coronary microcirculation can be detected in several cardiovascular diseases. On the basis of the clinical setting in which it occurs, coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) can be classified into four types: CMD in the absence of any other cardiac disease; CMD in myocardial diseases; CMD in obstructive epicardial coronary artery disease; and iatrogenic CMD. In some instances CMD represents an epiphenomenon, whereas in others it represents an important marker of risk or may contribute to the pathogenesis of myocardial ischemia, thus becoming a possible therapeutic target. This book provides an update on coronary physiology and a systematic assessment of microvascular abnormalities in cardiovascular diseases, in the hope that it will assist clinicians in prevention, detection and management of CMD in their everyday activity.

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.
Download or read book Coronary Vasomotion Abnormalities written by Hiroaki Shimokawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 155 pages. Download or read book Inflammation and Atherosclerosis written by Georg Wick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-03 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been known for over 150 years that hallmarks of inflammation can be observed in the wall of atherosclerotic vessels. It was, however, not clear if this inflammation is the cause or the consequence of atherogenesis. More recently, it has become evident that inflammation mediated both by innate and adaptive immunity is instrumental even in the earliest stages of the development of atherosclerotic lesions, i.e., that it plays an important pathogenetic role. In this volume, international experts in the field discuss the pathogenetic, diagnostic, preventive and possible therapeutic relevance of inflammation in atherogenesis. This book is intended for researchers and physicians in the fields of vascular biology, immunology and atherosclerosis.

Download or read book Cardiovascular Risk Management written by W. Stephen Waring and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years, individual cardiovascular risk factors have been dealt with in isolation, often by specialists with an interest in one particular risk factor, for example hypertension or hypercholesterolaemia. There has recently been a move to emphasise the importance of reducing global cardiovascular risk, which requires clinicians to address any one of a number of different risk factors. The interplay between these various factors is important in our understanding of development of cardiovascular disease and, similarly, the synergistic effects of targeting different risk factors is important in risk reduction. This text provides a comprehensive and up-to-date review of modern cardiovascular risk management. It belongs to the 'In Clinical Practice' series, which incorporate multiple illustrations using novel and effective formats. Data are frequently presented as bullet point lists or tables so that the key information is clearly available. The emphasis is on overall cardiovascular risk reduction throughout, with integration of lifestyle and pharmacological interventions. Jointly written by specialists and GPs to provide cutting edge information tailored perfectly for the primary care settingInclude management algorithms to provide quick reference treatment pathwaysCredible evidence-based sources - when possible, evidence base for best practice by reference to primary research or international guidelinesBullet lists and short tables for clear presentation of key information

Download or read book Global Atlas on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Control written by Shanthi Mendis and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2011 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the magnitude of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to accelerate globally, the pressing need for increased awareness and for stronger and more focused international and country responses is increasingly recognized. This atlas on cardiovascular disease prevention and control is part of the response to this need. It documents the magnitude of the problem, using global cardiovascular mortality and morbidity data. It demonstrates the inequities in access to protection, exposure to risk, and access to care as the cause of major inequalities between countries and populations in the occurrence and outcome of CVDs. The report has graphs showing mortality rates of CVDs by age, by country/region, and is divided into three main sections: Section A: Cardiovascular diseases due to atherosclerosis -- Section B: Other cardiovascular diseases -- Section C: Prevention and control of CVDs: Policies, strategies and interventions."--Provided by publisher.
Download or read book Stroke Genetics written by Hugh S. Markus and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stroke is a major cause of death and the major cause of adult neurological disability in most of the world. Despite its importance on a population basis, research into the genetics of stroke has lagged behind that of many other disorders. However, the situation is now changing. An increasing number of single gene disorders causing stroke are being described, and there is growing evidence that polygenic factors are important in the risk of apparently "sporadic" stroke. Stroke Genetics provides an up-to-date review of the area, suitable for clinicians treating stroke patients, and both clinical and non-clinical researchers in the field of cerebrovascular disease. The full range of monogenic stroke disorders causing cerebrovascular disease, including ischaemic stroke, intracerebral haemorrhage, aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations, are covered. For each, clinical features, diagnosis, and genetics are described. Increasing evidence suggest that genetic factors are also important for the much more common multifactorial stroke; this evidence is reviewed along with the results of genetic studies in this area. Optimal and novel strategies for investigating multifactorial stroke, including the use of intermediate phenotypes such as intima-media thickness and MRI detected small vessel disease are reviewed. The book concludes by describing a practical approach to investigating patients with stroke for underlying genetic disorders. Also included is a list of useful websites.
