Download or read book Solid Gold written by R. Serge Denisoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 90 record companies release over 9,000 pop records each year-a staggering total of 52,000 songs. Each one competes for the gold record, the recording industry's symbol of success that certifies $1 million worth of records have been sold. Solid Gold explains why, for each record that succeeds, countless others fail. This book follows the progress of a record through production, marketing, and distribution, and shows how a mistake made at any point can mean its doom. Denisoff suggests that a drastic shift in the demographic makeup of the pop music audience during the sixties has resulted in a broader listening public, including fans at every level of society.

Download or read book Tarnished Gold written by R. Serge Denisoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great depression in the popular recording industry that began in 1979 still continues. There are signs, however, that the industry is adjusting to new technologies and may soon revive. R. Serge Denisoff documents the decline and possible revival of this comprehensive study of the recording business, a sequel to his widely acclaimed Solid Gold: The Popular Record Industry. Denisoff offers a brief history of popular music and then, in detail, traces the life cycle of a record, beginning with the artist in the studio and following the record until its purchase. He explains the relationships between artist, manager, producer, company, distributor, merchandiser, and media. They all play roles in the scenario of a hit record. He also discusses the new technologies and how they may affect record sales, especially round-the-clock rock and roll on cable television. Tarnished Gold joins Solid Gold as a staple in the popular culture literature.

Download or read book Inflamed written by Rupa Marya and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raj Patel, the New York Times bestselling author of The Value of Nothing, teams up with physician, activist, and co-founder of the Do No Harm Coalition Rupa Marya to reveal the links between health and structural injustices--and to offer a new deep medicine that can heal our bodies and our world. The Covid pandemic and the shocking racial disparities in its impact. The surge in inflammatory illnesses such as gastrointestinal disorders and asthma. Mass uprisings around the world in response to systemic racism and violence. Rising numbers of climate refugees. Our bodies, societies, and planet are inflamed. Boldly original, Inflamed takes us on a medical tour through the human body—our digestive, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems. Unlike a traditional anatomy book, this groundbreaking work illuminates the hidden relationships between our biological systems and the profound injustices of our political and economic systems. Inflammation is connected to the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the diversity of the microbes living inside us, which regulate everything from our brain’s development to our immune system’s functioning. It’s connected to the number of traumatic events we experienced as children and to the traumas endured by our ancestors. It’s connected not only to access to health care but to the very models of health that physicians practice. Raj Patel, the renowned political economist and New York Times bestselling author of The Value of Nothing, teams up with the physician Rupa Marya to offer a radical new cure: the deep medicine of decolonization. Decolonizing heals what has been divided, reestablishing our relationships with the Earth and one another. Combining the latest scientific research and scholarship on globalization with the stories of Marya’s work with patients in marginalized communities, activist passion, and the wisdom of Indigenous groups, Inflamed points the way toward a deep medicine that has the potential to heal not only our bodies, but the world.

This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INFLAMED: The Testimony of a Modern Prodigal. The Modern Christian Series #2 is the story of someone born in a Christian home and brought up in the church. He grew up an ardent, committed, and conscientious Christian. But through reading indiscriminately, and naively befriending all and sundry, he fell into sin. His experiences in the world of sin were so horrendous and became so entrenched that eventually the Holy Spirit departed from him. It was after seven years that he came to himself, and, like Nebuchadnezzar, his reason returned, and he decided to reunite with the Father. The events that marked his return home were as spectacular as was his descent into the quagmire of sin. He actually had a Pentecostal “rushing mighty wind” experience as the apostles did; enjoyed the distinction of God speaking to him audibly as he did to the child Samuel or Moses at the burning bush; and had the honor of God proposing and sealing a covenant with him just as He did with Noah, Abraham, and David. His books, The Modern Christian Series, are the fruits of these experiences: messages from God to Christendom.

Life has become so fast that we are finding it difficult to absorb and process this data to produce useful information for us. It is high time when the youth should take the lead to shape the mechanisms of developing the much needed scientific temper among the people in this age of technology, so that we can leverage the true potential of technology and use it for a prosperous tomorrow. We wish that the youth not only possess this broad vision but also work in this direction.

Download or read book Teaching Responsibility and the Corruption of Youth written by Tina Besley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching, Responsibility, and the Corruption of Youth explores the concept and practice of responsibility in education and teaching in the new post-Cold War era after the long run of globalization and liberal internationalism has been disrupted by the rise of populism, anti-immigration sentiments and new forms of terrorism. The old liberal values and forms of tolerance have been questioned. Responsibility is a complex concept in our lives with moral, social, financial and political aspects. It embraces both legal and moral forms, and refers to the state of being accountable or answerable for one’s actions implying a sense of obligation associated with being in a position of authority such as a parent, teacher or guardian having authority over children. First used with schools in 1855, the concept's legal meaning was only tested in the 1960s when student conduct, especially when materially affecting the rights of other students, was not considered immune by constitutional guarantees of freedom. This volume investigates the questions left with us today: What does responsibility mean in the present era? Does loco parentis still hold? What of the rights of students? In what does teacher responsibility consist? Can student autonomy be reconciled with market accountability? To what extent can responsibility of or for students be linked to ‘care of the self’ and ‘care for others’? And, most importantly, to what extent, if any, can teachers be held accountable for the actions of their students?
Download or read book Fire this Time written by Gerald Horne and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1965 the predominantly black neighborhood of Watts in Los Angeles erupted in flames and violence following an incident of police brutality. This is the first comprehensive treatment of that uprising. Property losses reached hundreds of millions of dollars and the official death toll was thirty-four, but the political results were even more profound. The civil rights movement was placed on the defensive as the image of meek and angelic protestors in the South was replaced by the image of "rioting" blacks in the West. A "white backlash" ensued that led directly to Ronald Reagan's election as governor of California in 1966. In Fire This Time Horne delineates the central roles played by Ronald Reagan, Tom Bradley, Martin Luther King, Jr., Edmund G. Brown, and organizations such as the NAACP, Black Panthers, Nation of Islam, and gangs. He documents the role of the Cold War in the dismantling of legalized segregation, and he looks at the impact of race, region, class, gender, and age on postwar Los Angeles. All this he considers in light of world developments, particularly in Vietnam, the Soviet Union, China, and Africa.
Download or read book John Keats a Youth Elect written by D W Pryke and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late October 1820, having sailed to Italy in the hope the warmer climate would improve his failing health, John Keats endured 10 days' quarantine in the Bay of Naples. Those ten days are the timescale and one half of this narrative in which Keats looks back on his life, his development as a poet, and the tragic love relationship with his nineteen year old fiancee Fanny Brawne. A second timescale, and the other half of the narrative, follows the six weeks Fanny spent in Wentworth Place, Hampstead, waiting for news of Keats. During this period, she feels she has lost the man she loves, and feels desperately isolated amongst Keats' small circle of friends. This is the story of John Keats' emergence as a poet-hero in the Classical mould, exploring the darker regions of the psyche to discover true enlightenment. This is also the story of Fanny Brawne, given a voice for the first time as the near equal partner of the poet himself. John Keats and Fanny Brawne - as one, but apart - this is their story."
