Book Time Dependent Behaviour of Concrete Structures

Download or read book Time Dependent Behaviour of Concrete Structures written by Raymond Ian Gilbert and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-09-21 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in codes of practice are relatively crude and, in some situations, unreliable and do not adequately model the in-service behaviour of structures. In particular, they fail to adequately account for the effects of creep and shrinkage of the concrete. Design for serviceability is complicated by the non-linear and inelastic behaviour of concrete at service loads. Providing detailed information, this book helps engineers to rationally predict the time-varying deformation of concrete structures under typical in-service conditions. It gives analytical methods to help anticipate time-dependent cracking, the gradual change in tension stiffening with time, creep induced deformations and the load independent strains caused by shrinkage and temperature changes. The calculation procedures are illustrated with many worked examples. A vital guide for practising engineers and advanced students of structural engineering on the design of concrete structures for serviceability and provides a penetrating insight into the time-dependent behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures.

Book Optics for Engineers

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles A. DiMarzio
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2024-03-13
  • ISBN : 1482263262
  • Pages : 750 pages

Download or read book Optics for Engineers written by Charles A. DiMarzio and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of geometric and physical optics as they relate to practical problems encountered by engineers and researchers in designing and analyzing optical systems. In this updated edition, the author focuses on topics that are critical to understanding how the basic principles of optics affect design decisions. In addition to information on breadboarding experiments and prototypes, the new edition also expands its coverage of diffraction and includes numerous complete examples, and practical reminders Professor Charles A. DiMarzio is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and the Department of Bioengineering at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. He spent 14 years at Raytheon Company’s Electro-Optics Systems Laboratory in coherent laser radar for air safety and meteorology. Among other projects there, he worked on an airborne laser radar, flown on the Galileo-II, to monitor airflow related to severe storms, pollution, and wind energy, and another laser radar to characterize the wake vortices of landing aircraft. His current research in biomedical optics focuses on microscopy including coherent imaging, structured illumination, and multi-modal imaging. He is also a founding member of Gordon-CenSSIS – the Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems.

Book Straightforward Statistics

Download or read book Straightforward Statistics written by Chieh-Chen Bowen and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 609 pages. Book Dynamics Numerical Explorations

Download or read book Dynamics Numerical Explorations written by Helena E. Nusse and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-author J.A. Yorke developed an array of tools to help visualize the properties of dynamical systems, while Yorke found it useful to combine these various basic tools into one single package: Dynamics. The program together with this manual provides an introduction to and an overview of fundamental, sophisticated tools and numerical methods together with many simple examples. All numerical methods described in this handbook are implemented in the program, which is capable of, among others: iterating maps and solving differential equations; plotting trajectories; featuring an array of simple commands; printing a created picture in resolution higher than that of the screen. Requires a UNIX workstation running X11 graphics or a PC.

Book Count Like an Egyptian

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Reimer
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2014-05-11
  • ISBN : 1400851416
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Count Like an Egyptian written by David Reimer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-11 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively collection of fun and challenging problems in ancient Egyptian math The mathematics of ancient Egypt was fundamentally different from our math today. Contrary to what people might think, it wasn't a primitive forerunner of modern mathematics. In fact, it can’t be understood using our current computational methods. Count Like an Egyptian provides a fun, hands-on introduction to the intuitive and often-surprising art of ancient Egyptian math. David Reimer guides you step-by-step through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and more. He even shows you how fractions and decimals may have been calculated—they technically didn’t exist in the land of the pharaohs. You’ll be counting like an Egyptian in no time, and along the way you’ll learn firsthand how mathematics is an expression of the culture that uses it, and why there’s more to math than rote memorization and bewildering abstraction. Reimer takes you on a lively and entertaining tour of the ancient Egyptian world, providing rich historical details and amusing anecdotes as he presents a host of mathematical problems drawn from different eras of the Egyptian past. Each of these problems is like a tantalizing puzzle, often with a beautiful and elegant solution. As you solve them, you’ll be immersed in many facets of Egyptian life, from hieroglyphs and pyramid building to agriculture, religion, and even bread baking and beer brewing. Fully illustrated in color throughout, Count Like an Egyptian also teaches you some Babylonian computation—the precursor to our modern system—and compares ancient Egyptian mathematics to today’s math, letting you decide for yourself which is better.
