Book Encounters with Infinity

Download or read book Encounters with Infinity written by Michael Van Laanen and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original title of this manuscript was Pages - A Voyage to Infinity. It's kinda like Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass; a collection of poems with an underlying mystical theme. My dissertation is a kaleidoscope puzzle of images and thoughts and concepts and ideas taken from mysticism, science, logic, and mathematics. The end result, as the puzzle pieces are linked together, is a new portrait of Number. The reader is challenged to solve a conceptual picture puzzle using the chaotic scattering of puzzle pieces set forth in the thesis. Some of the pieces challenge established ideas. Some of the pieces are decoys leading to dead ends. Some are background. Others are transition pieces. And, there are pieces that give the reader glimpses of me, the writ er of this thesis. So, exact ly what is infinit y? As the pieces of the puzzle are put together a new concept of infinity emerges, a concept that may be of interest to the mystics, the philosopher, the quantum physicist, and mathematicians who are open to a new window through which to view reality.

Book Is God Unnecessary

Download or read book Is God Unnecessary written by Walter Alan Ray and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Stephen Hawking, the most famous scientist living in the twenty-first century, published The Grand Design, he provoked a lively response in the media. Hawking wrote that the laws of physics make God unnecessary when explaining the origin of the universe and everything in it. In Is God Unnecessary?, author Walter Alan Ray presents nine reasons why Hawking’s thesis is mistaken. Ray does not use philosophical or theological arguments, but presents the same laws of physics that Hawking says demonstrate his position. Ray examines • Hawking’s “Apparent Miracle”; • Hawking’s assumption that Charles Darwin explained the origin of human life; • the question “Can something come out of nothing?”; • the cosmological constant in Einstein’s equations, the factor that Hawking considers the most impressive coincidence; • Hawking’s solution to the “completely incomprehensible” value of the cosmological constant; and • how physics and mathematics join in showing that in the current state of our knowledge, physics and mathematics do have something to say about the origin of the universe. Ray determines that the laws of physics and mathematics show there are two possible answers to the question “How did we come to live in a universe that is as astoundingly fine-tuned as ours?”. The arguments presented by Ray in Is God Unnecessary? show neither of these two answers is the solution proposed by Hawking.

Book The Mathematics of Infinity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A balanced and clearly explained treatment of infinity in mathematics. The concept of infinity has fascinated and confused mankind for centuries with concepts and ideas that cause even seasoned mathematicians to wonder. For instance, the idea that a set is infinite if it is not a finite set is an elementary concept that jolts our common sense and imagination. the Mathematics of Infinity: A guide to Great Ideas uniquely explores how we can manipulate these ideas when our common sense rebels at the conclusions we are drawing. Writing with clear knowledge and affection for the subject, the author introduces and explores infinite sets, infinite cardinals, and ordinals, thus challenging the readers' intuitive beliefs about infinity. Requiring little mathematical training and a healthy curiosity, the book presents a user-friendly approach to ideas involving the infinite. readers will discover the main ideas of infinite cardinals and ordinal numbers without experiencing in-depth mathematical rigor. Classic arguments and illustrative examples are provided throughout the book and are accompanied by a gradual progression of sophisticated notions designed to stun your intuitive view of the world. With a thoughtful and balanced treatment of both concepts and theory, The Mathematics of Infinity focuses on the following topics: * Sets and Functions * Images and Preimages of Functions * Hilbert's Infinite Hotel * Cardinals and Ordinals * The Arithmetic of Cardinals and Ordinals * the Continuum Hypothesis * Elementary Number Theory * The Riemann Hypothesis * The Logic of Paradoxes Recommended as recreational reading for the mathematically inquisitive or as supplemental reading for curious college students, the Mathematics of Infinity: A Guide to Great Ideas gently leads readers into the world of counterintuitive mathematics.

Book A Guided Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jaan Valsiner
  • Publisher : Transaction Publishers
  • Release : 2013-09-05
  • ISBN : 1412851912

Download or read book A Guided Science written by Jaan Valsiner and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That sciences are guided by explicit and implicit ties to their surrounding social world is not new. Jaan Valsiner fills in the wide background of scholarship on the history of science, the recent focus on social studies of sciences, and the cultural and cognitive analyses of knowledge making. The theoretical scheme that he uses to explain the phenomena of social guidance of science comes from his thinking about processes of development in general--his theory of bounded indeterminacy--and on the relations of human beings with their culturally organized environments. Valsiner examines reasons for the slow and nonlinear progress of ideas in psychology as a science at the border of natural and social sciences. Why is that intellectual progress occurs in different countries at different times? Most responses are self-serving blinders for presenting science as a given rather than understanding it as a deeply human experience. For Valsiner, scientific knowledge is cultural at its core. Major changes have occurred in contemporary sciences--collective authorship, fragmentation of knowledge into small, quickly published (and equally quickly retractable) journal articles, and the counting of numbers of such articles by institutions as if that is a measure of "scientific productivity." Scientists are inherently ambivalent about the benefit of these changes for the actual development of knowledge. There is a gradual "takeover" of the domain of scientific knowledge creation by other social institutions with vested interests in defending and promoting knowledge that serves their social interests. Sciences are entering into a new form of social servitude.
