Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In architecture, a span is something to be conquered, a challenge to overcome. For an instance by reducing the number of supports, expanding floor slabs horizontally, tearing into the open air, and shedding more light on the ground floor. But span, or vao in Portuguese, also means a project or an action that ends in failure: something that was done in vain. In Brazil, modernisation was touted as a leap over the country s history, cast as backwardness and, in the case of architecture, over the absence of two traditions: the classical and the artisanal an abysmal jump, in the face of the immense scale of its territory. And a challenge met head-on by an ambitious aesthetic avantgarde, invested in new design and remarkable engineering. Brazil is a country condemned to the modern, said the critic Mario Pedrosa, conceiving this condemnation as liberation from tradition and as a freedome to transform what could be done in vain ( em vao ) in the effective cultural conquest of the free span ( vao livre ). For Brazilian architects, the word vao is almost always a synonym of freedom. This publication assembles representative projects and works of Brazilian architecture made between 1920 and 2018. It will propose crosscutting dialogues between the presented projects and highlight the intersections between architecture, music, literature, cinema, and performing arts. The book is structured in six chronological and thematic modules with titles corresponding to outstanding songs of each period. 400 illustrations

  • Pages : 94 pages

Download or read book Infinite Span written by Noah Schwartz and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many "how-to" books that explore the inner workings of the music business and outline important steps for success, from recording songs to growing a social media following. But these steps are only half of the equation. They're focused on content, but what they're often missing is context. In Infinite Span: Lives in Music, professor of media Noah Schwartz explores music by placing it in context: historical, philosophical, technological, personal, and cultural. Through these explorations, you will learn how music as an art and industry got to where it is today, where it may be going, and how you can find your place in it. Noah acts as a guide on a journey of musical, technological, and cultural innovation, sharing stories of artists and visionaries throughout history, crossing genres from classical music to jazz, hip hop, and vaporwave. It's the synthesis of history with self reflection and important personal questions to help you discover what you really want and how you can find it. This is the Infinite Span: a never-ending journey to make music your life and to make your life music.

Book Understanding Aerodynamics

Download or read book Understanding Aerodynamics written by Doug McLean and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much-needed, fresh approach that brings a greater insight into the physical understanding of aerodynamics Based on the author’s decades of industrial experience with Boeing, this book helps students and practicing engineers to gain a greater physical understanding of aerodynamics. Relying on clear physical arguments and examples, Mclean provides a much-needed, fresh approach to this sometimes contentious subject without shying away from addressing "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience. Motivated by the belief that engineering practice is enhanced in the long run by a robust understanding of the basics as well as real cause-and-effect relationships that lie behind the theory, he provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations, and building upon the contrasts provided by wrong explanations to strengthen understanding of the right ones. Provides a refreshing view of aerodynamics that is based on the author’s decades of industrial experience yet is always tied to basic fundamentals. Provides intuitive physical interpretations and explanations, debunking commonly-held misconceptions and misinterpretations Offers new insights to some familiar topics, for example, what the Biot-Savart law really means and why it causes so much confusion, what “Reynolds number” and “incompressible flow” really mean, and a real physical explanation for how an airfoil produces lift. Addresses "real" aerodynamic situations as opposed to the oversimplified ones frequently used for mathematical convenience, and omits mathematical details whenever the physical understanding can be conveyed without them.

Book Marine Rudders Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces

Download or read book Marine Rudders Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces written by Anthony F. Molland and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course keeping and manoeuvring requirements for a ship are governed by international maritime law. In assessing and predicting the course keeping and manoeuvring capabilities of the ship, knowledge is required of the rudder forces necessary to keep a course or facilitate a manoeuvre. The second edition of Marine Rudders, Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces includes up-to-date data and rudder design techniques that enable the rudder forces to be estimated, together with any interactions due to the hull and propeller. The new edition describes the design and application of hydrofoils including shape adaptive design, and their applications including hydrofoil craft, yachts, and kite surfing hydrofoils. The professional will also face the need to design control surfaces for motion control, such as roll and pitch, for surface vessels and submersibles, and the book contains the necessary techniques and data to carry out these tasks. This book is for practicing naval architects and marine engineers, small craft designers, yacht designers, hydrodynamicists, undergraduate and postgraduate students of naval architecture, maritime engineering and ship science, and the broader engineering community involved in the development of marine craft that rely on the generation of 'lift' such as control engineers and aerodynamicists. - Describes techniques for analyzing the performance characteristics of rudders, hydrofoils, and control surfaces - Includes extensive design data and worked examples for the analysis of rudder, hydrofoil and control surface performance - Provides a detailed examination of the design of hydrofoils

Book Influence of Static Longitudinal Stability on the Behavior of Airplanes in Gusts

Download or read book Influence of Static Longitudinal Stability on the Behavior of Airplanes in Gusts written by H. Hoene and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equations of motion for an airplane penetrating a gust are derived using a few simplifying assumptions. Calculations of loads for different static longitudinal stability on two German airplane models, HC 45 and HS 122, are compared with flight tests. Good agreement is obtained between the trend of the flight tests and the calculated values; however no absolute comparison was possible between the flight tests and calculations.
