Book Growth Patterns in Physical Sciences and Biology

Download or read book Growth Patterns in Physical Sciences and Biology written by Jaun-Manuel Garcia-Ruiz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade interest in the formation of complex disorderly patterns far from equilibrium has grown rapidly. This interest has been stim ulated by the development of new approaches (based primarily on fractal geometry) to the quantitative description of complex structures, increased understanding of non-linear phenomena and the introduction of a variety of models (such as the diffusion-limited aggregation model) that provide paradigms for non-equilibrium growth phenomena. Advances in computer technology have played a crucial role in both the experimental and theoret ical aspects of this enterprise. Substantial progress has been made towards the development of comprehensive understanding of non-equilibrium growth phenomena but most of our current understanding is based on simple com puter models. Pattern formation processes are important in almost all areas of science and technology, and, clearly, pattern growth pervades biology. Very often remarkably similar patterns are found in quite diverse systems. In some case (dielectric breakdown, electrodeposition, fluid-fluid displacement in porous media, dissolution patterns and random dendritic growth for example) the underlying causes of this similarity is quite well understood. In other cases (vascular trees, nerve cells and river networks for example) we do not yet know if a fundamental relationship exists between the mechanisms leading the formation of these structures.

Book A Course in Minimal Surfaces

Download or read book A Course in Minimal Surfaces written by Tobias H. Colding and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Minimal surfaces date back to Euler and Lagrange and the beginning of the calculus of variations. Many of the techniques developed have played key roles in geometry and partial differential equations. Examples include monotonicity and tangent cone analysis originating in the regularity theory for minimal surfaces, estimates for nonlinear equations based on the maximum principle arising in Bernstein's classical work, and even Lebesgue's definition of the integral that he developed in his thesis on the Plateau problem for minimal surfaces. This book starts with the classical theory of minimal surfaces and ends up with current research topics. Of the various ways of approaching minimal surfaces (from complex analysis, PDE, or geometric measure theory), the authors have chosen to focus on the PDE aspects of the theory. The book also contains some of the applications of minimal surfaces to other fields including low dimensional topology, general relativity, and materials science."--Publisher's description.

Book Mathematical Constants II

Download or read book Mathematical Constants II written by Steven R. Finch and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 783 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famous mathematical constants include the ratio of circular circumference to diameter, π = 3.14 ..., and the natural logarithm base, e = 2.718 .... Students and professionals can often name a few others, but there are many more buried in the literature and awaiting discovery. How do such constants arise, and why are they important? Here the author renews the search he began in his book Mathematical Constants, adding another 133 essays that broaden the landscape. Topics include the minimality of soap film surfaces, prime numbers, elliptic curves and modular forms, Poisson-Voronoi tessellations, random triangles, Brownian motion, uncertainty inequalities, Prandtl-Blasius flow (from fluid dynamics), Lyapunov exponents, knots and tangles, continued fractions, Galton-Watson trees, electrical capacitance (from potential theory), Zermelo's navigation problem, and the optimal control of a pendulum. Unsolved problems appear virtually everywhere as well. This volume continues an outstanding scholarly attempt to bring together all significant mathematical constants in one place.

Book Minimal Surfaces from a Complex Analytic Viewpoint

Download or read book Minimal Surfaces from a Complex Analytic Viewpoint written by Antonio Alarcón and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph offers the first systematic treatment of the theory of minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces by complex analytic methods, many of which have been developed in recent decades as part of the theory of Oka manifolds (the h-principle in complex analysis). It places particular emphasis on the study of the global theory of minimal surfaces with a given complex structure. Advanced methods of holomorphic approximation, interpolation, and homotopy classification of manifold-valued maps, along with elements of convex integration theory, are implemented for the first time in the theory of minimal surfaces. The text also presents newly developed methods for constructing minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains of Rn, based on the Riemann–Hilbert boundary value problem adapted to minimal surfaces and holomorphic null curves. These methods also provide major advances in the classical Calabi–Yau problem, yielding in particular minimal surfaces with the conformal structure of any given bordered Riemann surface. Offering new directions in the field and several challenging open problems, the primary audience of the book are researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in differential geometry and complex analysis. Although not primarily intended as a textbook, two introductory chapters surveying background material and the classical theory of minimal surfaces also make it suitable for preparing Masters or PhD level courses.

Book Theory of Block Polymer Self Assembly

Download or read book Theory of Block Polymer Self Assembly written by Benjamin R. Magruder and published by American Chemical Society. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primer introduces the theory of self-assembly of block polymers, most notably self-consistent field theory (SCFT). Block polymer self-assembly is a fascinating and highly interdisciplinary topic. This primer can be read at several levels, depending on what readers want to get out of it. Readers who want an overview of self-assembly in block polymer and what SCFT says about the process can read Chapters 1-3 and skip to Chapter 7 to see the open questions. If the reader is further interested in the output of SCFT calculations but not how those outputs are generated, they should read Chapter 6 as well. But if the reader wants to learn how to do the SCFT calculations themselves, Chapters 4 and 5 offer an accessible introduction to the theory and numerical methods, providing an excellent entry point into the literature. This primer includes data that the authors have computed using SCFT. All calculations use the open-source software package Polymer Self-Consistent Field (PSCF), developed by David Morse at the University of Minnesota. Take breaks from reading to watch ten “Insider Q&A” videos included throughout, which offer additional insight from experts in the field, such as An-Chang Shi, Chinedum O. Osuji, Frank S. Bates, Christopher M. Bates, Glenn H. Fredrickson, and Lisa Hall. Furthermore, this primer includes multiple features to aid and enhance readers’ learning. “That’s a Wrap” summarizes key concepts at the end of each chapter, while “Read These Next” suggests references that may interest further reading. A pop-up glossary ensures readers have definitions as needed throughout the primer.
